A VACANCY has arisen for a trainee reporter to join the enthusiastic news team on
the Gazette series of weekly newspapers in Gloucestershire. The position is based in
Dursley, between the Cotswolds and the River Severn, about 20 minutes from Bristol.
The Gazette is a well-respected paid-for title covering the communities in and around
Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge, Thornbury, Chipping Sodbury and Yate.
Applicants should ideally have had experience on a number of newspapers,
have passed the NCTJ Diploma or equivalent and have attained a shorthand

A new route into work

lock the great potential of
young people.
More and more young peo-
ple want to show employers
what they are made of.
A new poll conducted by
ICM Research out today
finds 72 percent of young
people questioned in the
South West want more em-
ployers to offer them work
experience.
Furthermore, nearly half
(44 percent) of those polled
said they would like the
chance to show a potential
employer what they can do
by doing work experience
with them, rather than just
selling their skills on an ap-
plication form or CV.
Launched last year, train-
eeships are providing that
chance by creating new op-
portunities to gain vital expe-
rience in the workplace. The
programme provides them
with the work experience,
work preparation training
and maths and English skills
needed to get an apprentice-
ship or other job.
As part of a traineeship,
trainees are also given work
preparation training which
includes CV writing and in-
terview skills. And the poll
goes on to show how young
people want help from em-
ployers in this area. It finds
64 percent of young people
questioned in the region
want detailed feedback on
their application/interview
if they are unsuccessful and
half (51 percent) of those
questioned would like more
information before an inter-
view to help them prepare
(for instance what to wear
and how long it might take).
Moreover, an additional
poll of 501 employers in Eng-
land reveals how they are
adapting their recruitment
techniques to get the most
from young candidates, such
as would be trainees and ap-
prentices. Of the employers
questioned 22 percent have
made the interview process
less formal to encourage
young candidates to open up
and 23 percent now provide
more detailed feedback to un-
successful candidates.
Another 18 percent provide
training and guidance to line
managers to help them inter-
view young people.
Traineeships were devel-
oped to help young people,
aged 16 to 23, to try and im-
prove their employability
prospects and unlock their
potential.

THEFosseway Artists are
holding their 91st exhibition
of paintings and sculpture at
Nature in Art , Wallsworth
Hall, Twigworth, from
September 15-28.
Nature in Art is dedicated
to fine, decorative and
applied art inspired by
nature and the more than 90
members of The Fosseway
Artists will be taking Nature
in Art as the theme for this
two-week-long exhibition.
At least two of the group
will be on hand at all times
during the exhibition to chat
about their work, and some
will be working live on new
pieces at the exhibition.

The show has been pieced
together with a plethora of
the most popular and beauti-
ful music of the 1940s war-
time era, featuring songs by
Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields,
Bing Crosby, The Andrew Sis-
ters, Frank Sinatra and many
more.
Kate Ashby, Laura-Jean
Clinton and Nichola Roberts
perform in a series of authen-
tic costumes to add a touch of
1940s glamour to the occasion.
Also, with a dazzling back-
drop of original film footage
from the era and sing-a-long
sheets for the audience, the
show promises to bring the
spirit of wartime Britain alive
for everybody.
