STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem that I have discovered with the Third Year Class of Sta.
Rosa Academy is that they are not well familiarize on the parts of the Holy
Mass and most of the students are attention seeker as if they were
taken/treated for granted.
I discovered the said problem last semester when my teacher in the
subject Assessment of Learning gave us a requirement to make test
questions in line of our major and to execute that test to a particular class to
find the test validity, reliability and consistency. So, I executed the test to
the Third Year Class of Sta. Rosa Academy. Through the test results, I was
able to find out that there is really a problem with the students.
However, the existing problem was confirmed when I had given the
opportunity to hold the Third year Class last January 6 because their teacher
in Christian Living was sick. I was not ready to give them a lesson because I
was only informed that morning. So what I did is to review them of their
past/previous lesson which is all about the sacraments (since they are to be
prepared for the sacrament of confirmation for this coming March). Then
suddenly, it reminded me about the result of their test which was executed
last semester. So I asked the students, “how are they familiar with the
Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, its essence/importance. I told them that
since elementary they were already having their catechism about prayers,
commandments and sacraments but until now they still do not familiar with
the Mass. And the irony is that they are in a Catholic institution wherein they
are having Mass every now and then.
With that situation, my curiosity brought me to investigate a few of the
faculty/teachers. With their given statements; I found out that the causes of
this problem are more on the teacher factor. Because for almost or more
than six years the students were not attended because there is only one
religion (Christian Living) and values teacher from grades 1-6 and first year
to fourth year. Therefore the students were not given the sufficient attention
and were not properly motivated. Likewise the teacher lacks the
commanding power and the command of respect from the students that’s
why the students were not so serious during the lesson discussion. Perhaps,
the teacher does not level his thinking to the level of thinking of his learners
or he does not go down to the level of his learners.
Therefore, with the given problem and its causes, it would be better if
the strategies that will use id to give them constant lecture about the liturgy
and its concept, to give them lesson on the importance/essence of going to
Mass, to discuss to them the parts of the Holy Mass, to require and motivate
them to attend Mass regularly, above all to give them proper motivation
which is integrated in the lesson.
With that, I come up to these questions:

1. What are the causes of the problem?

2. How will you help these students to become familiar with the parts
of the Holy Mass and motivate them to participate actively in the
Mass?

C. PROBLEM ANALYSIS
I conducted the pre-test last February 3 to the Third Year student of
Sta. Rosa Academy during the class of Frt. Derrick their Christian Living III
teacher. There were 37 students, 20 are males and 17 are females. There
were 6 students who absent that day therefore I conducted the pre-test for
them the other day February 5. The test is composed of 15 items multiple
choice. After all the students have taken the test, I checked all the papers
which results is shown below.

14 – 15 - Excellent
11 – 13 - Average
8 – 10 - Satisfactory
5 – 7 - Needs Improvement
0 – 4 - Poor

11 – 13 1 3% A
8 – 10 16 43% S
5–7 17 46% NI
0–4 3 8% P

In the table shown above, there is only 1 student who got an average
with the score of eleven, there are 16 students who got satisfactory which
ranging 8 – 12, 14 students needs improvement which scores ranging from 5
– 7 yet there are 8 students who are poor which scores ranging from 0 – 4. If
we are going to add the percentage of those who needs improvement 46%
to the percentage of those who got poor then it will sum up to 54% of the
class. Therefore, it is clear that majority of the class were not familiar with
the parts of the Holy Mass.

D. IMPLEMENTATION AND ACTION

I started implementing the strategies to solve the existing problem of
the Third year students of Sta. Rosa Academy last February 5 by getting
their attendance during their First Friday Mass, followed by another checking
of attendance during Sunday Masses from February 8 to 22. The only
strategies used in solving the problem was very common because I only
conducted a constant lecture and give appropriate lessons which is all about
the Eucharist. I gave them lecture for four times. The first thing I did was to
review them about the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist last February 5. Then
the first lecture that I gave to them last February 12 is about the Basic
Concept of the Liturgy. Followed by a In the lectures that I conducted,
motivations and activities are integrated in order to find out if they are really
learning or not. However, through interaction after the lecture

who got an average with the ranging scores of 11 – 13 and 30% who got
satisfactory with the score of 8 – 10. Nobody got the score of 0 -7.
E. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

After a couple of Months being immersed in the Third Year Class of Sta.
Rosa Academy, I confirmed that the cause of the existing problem is due to
teacher factor because for more than 6 years they are not well attended and
motivated, I found out that the students were not difficult to manage, in fact
they are very cooperative and inquisitive at times.

However, after a thorough execution of the strategies I conclude that

the strategies used such as lecture with discussion with proper motivation
integrated in the lesson and with the used of traditional instructional
material the students were now familiarize on the parts of the Mass and they
are already participating actively during the Mass.

F. RECOMMENDATION
I strongly recommend that all teachers must give proper attention to
their learners. Likewise, teacher should be sensible enough to the needs of
their learners. They should be
