2014 Local Council Candidates Asked To Tell All
T
hrough the years surfers, sailors, and pirates
alike have an unyielding need tell their tales
of faraway ports rich with a boundless wealth
of spices, and gold, and lest we
forget ladies of the most exqui-
site type. They share a pint of ale
in taverns and shops, and in
whispered voices tell tales of
squid as large as whales, and
even more fantastic are the sto-
ries of waves reaching tall as the
mast of largest ships to sail the
seas.
Today is no different than it
were then for when the ocean
seizes its swell, the winds calm,
and the surf it seems as if it will
never raise again, that is when
the surfers gather in shops,
around fire rings along the
shore, and the gates of the of the pier to exchange
stories of yesterdays session.
Recently I was in Chuck Dents Surf Shop in Hunt-
ington Beach. The swell was flat, and the day had
started rather cloudy and dim. There a group of us
gathered surfers one and all, sharing tales of long ago
days when the surf was at its optimum. More often
than not the stories often begin with familiar opening
phrase known to every surfer since the days of the
Duke; You should have been here yester-
day! Mind you! Yesterday is this ever
illusive day that in my fifty-years of surf-
ing I have never been able to experience
much less capture. No matter just how
epic todays session is yesterday was
somehow better than it ever will be today?
Well, as the conversations wore on, and
the boredom set in, the topics evolved into
more and more ridiculous arenas until it
came to the inevitable juncture some-
where between outlandish, and sadly pos-
sible. It began with myself setting the par
for the todays fantastic observations with
the question; What if you had but hours to
live, and the waves were as big as anyone

W
hat does it all mean, does anyone care? Is
real change in the air -in the water?
The "Ban" era, is it a phase for Huntington
Beach, Ca., or is it the new norm?
Are single use plastic bags a culprit? There
seems to be arguments on both sides. Are paper
bags a function of more business for China and
contain lead...I have no idea. Are Safe & Sane
Fireworks safe and sane or not? Should all forms
of fireworks be banned? Should we legislate the
right of grocery stores to charge us 10 or 15 cents
per bag? In fact any retail store over 10,000
square feet, or grossing over certain dollar thresh-
olds have been given that right also.
Then, how about "rent control" everything I
read...and I admit it might be tainted against such
a concept suggests that along with rent control
comes property devaluation, lower levels of land-
lord maintenance, etc. What is on the Agenda for
the next city council?
The larger issue, at least at the moment, seems
to be a simple majority of 4 people making land-
mark decisions affecting the lives of over 200,000
people, living in the 17th or 18th largest city in
the State of California. Should 4 people legislate
items like city-wide bans? Should 4 people legis-
late anything that affects the total population?
What is the role of a city council person? I like
to use the analogy personally experienced. Annu-
ally, Public Works will present to council their
plans to signalize new intersections. They base

O
ne day I had lunch
with some friends.
Jim, a short, balding
golfer type about 80 years
old, came along with us---all
in all, a pleasant bunch.
When the menus were
presented, we ordered sal-
ads, sandwiches, and soups,
except for Jim who said,
"Ice Cream, please. Two
scoops, chocolate.
I wasn't sure my ears heard
right, and the others were
aghast. "Along with heated
apple pie," Jim added, com-
pletely unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant,
as if people did this all the time.. But
when our orders were brought out, I
didn't enjoy mine.
I couldn't take my eyes off Jim as
his pie a-la-mode went down. The
other guys couldn't believe it. They ate
their lunches silently and grinned.
The next time I went out to eat, I
called and invited Jim . I lunched on white
meat tuna. He ordered a parfait. I smiled.
He asked if he amused me.
I answered, "Yes, you do, but also you
confuse me. How come you order rich
desserts, while I feel I must be sensible?"
He laughed and said "I'm tasting all that
is Possible. I try to eat the food I need, and
do the things I should. But life's so short,
my friend, I hate missing out on something
good. This year I realized how old I was.
(He grinned) I haven't been this old before.
So, before I die, I've got to try those things
that for years I had ignored.
"I haven't smelled all the flowers yet.
There are too many trout streams I haven't
fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf
down and kites to be flown overhead.
"There are too many golf courses I
haven't played. I've not laughed at all the
jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events
and potato chips and cokes.
"I want to wade again in water and feel
ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a
country church once more and thank God
for His grace.
"I want peanut butter every day spread
on my morning toast. I want un-timed long
distance calls to the folks I love the most.
"I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or
walked in the morning rain. I need to feel
wind on my face. I want to be in love
again.
"So, if I choose to have dessert, instead
of having dinner, then should I die before
night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because
I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's
desire. I had that final chocolate mousse
before my life expired."
With that, I called the waitress over.. "I've
changed my mind, " I said. "I want what he
is having, only add some more whipped
cream!"
This is my gift to you - We need an an-
nual Friends Day! Live well, love much &
laugh often - Be happy.
Be mindful that happiness isn't based on
possessions, power, or prestige, but on re-
lationships with people we like and respect.

very elderly couple is having an el-
egant dinner to celebrate their 75th
wedding anniversary. The old man
leans forward and says softly to his wife,

When students took the entrance exam for medical school, they were perplexed by
this question: "Rearrange the letters p-n-e-s-i to spell out the part of the human body
that is most useful when erect."

ore than 30,000 spectators
recently enjoyed the 14th
Annual Huntington Beach
Cruiser Meet along Main Street, Pier
Plaza and even on the historic Hunt-
ington Beach Pier. The popular event
always features a special poster
drawn by legendary artist Jim
Krogle. This year's art features the
HB Lifeguard headquarters, as it
looked south of the pier in the 1960s.

fun, especially Phil Wilder's 1941
Woody, which he has for sale

Chris Cole from the City of Hunting-
ton Beach and many volunteers to
put on this classic

Homework Help
T
he Huntington Beach Library offers two free resources for all age stu-
dents returning to school after summer break. The online homework
database HelpNow! Powered by Brainfuse is available on the Li-
brarys website www.hbpl.org and is accessible from home with a library
card or by using one of the computers in the Childrens area inside the Li-
brary. Students can connect with live tutors, get reading, writing and language
assistance, study tips and much more.
Another great resource for students is the
Homework Club for elementary and middle
school students. Central Librarys home-
work club starts September 22 and is held
Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to
5 p.m. in the Maddy Room (registration be-
gins 3:15). The Oak View Branch Librarys
homework club meets Mondays, Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and
Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm.
Students and parents need to register
with the onsite coordinator before tu-
toring begins.

volving Caucasian Police Offices and African

was black. I am not sure
the President of the U.S.
was involved after the inci-
dent or the Attorney Gen-
eral.
How about Officer Jef-
frey Westerfield. He was a
Gary, Indiana police officer
who was shot to death last
month on July 6th. Wester-
field was white. police offi-
cer His killer, Carl LeEllis
Blount, Jr. was an African-
American.
Or Officer Perry Renn?
He was an Indianapolis, Indiana police officer who
was shot to death just last month on July 5th, the day
before Officer Westerfield was killed. Officer Renn
was white. His killer, Major Davis, was black.
Vermillion Parish Deputy Sheriff Allen Bares was
gunned down by two men just last June 23rd in
Louisiana. Deputy Bares was white. His two
killers, Quintlan Richard and Baylon Taylor, were
black gentlemen.
Detective Charles Dinwiddie of the Killeen Police
Department was murdered by Marvin Lewis Guy, a
black male. Officer Dinwiddie was white. This hap-
pened on May 11th, just over two months ago. I
Then, there is Officer Kevin Jordan of the Griffin,
Georgia Police Department. He was gunned down
just two months ago on
May 31st. Officer Jor-
dan was black. His
killer, Michael Bowman,
was white. This was a
white man murdering a
black police officer.
No, Jesse Jackson. No,
"The Reverend" Al
Sharpton? No looting
and burning on the
streets of Griffin,
Over the past 60+
days, there have been
five reported deaths of
police officers by gun-
shot in the US. Of those,
four were white officers who were murdered by black
men.
We are sure we left out numerous similar incidents
on both sides of the issue. Let justice happen regard-
less of the color of either the Police Officer or the as-
sailant...with out politics, racial profiling or the hate
crime matrix.

AMERICA : A country where we have
our brave warriors, damaged for life, wait-
ing in year long + lines for their due, the
elderly going without needed medication
and the mentally ill without treatment, and
for all of us, our safety is at risk because
prisoners are being released back onto the
streets due to "lack of
funds -- etc.
Sad, isn't it?
Add to that the cancer-
ous growth of the Federal
Government where dog
walkers make $6 figure
incomes and all salaries
outstrip the private sector
where wealth is actually
created.
As one of my favorite
people over the years
used to say, What right
do we have to send a
lamp to Indonesia that we cannot keep lit
at home?
Will we ever see:
Sunset laws on all government agen-
cies and departments?
Term limits for all politicians?
Systematic reduction in Federal em-
ployees year over year?
Scaled elimination of all welfare
fraud?
Expansion of States rights?
Securing of our borders?
Sure, this is a rant -but it is based more
on reality, unfortunately, than perception.
we do need change, a re-focus on our own
back yards and human needs...YES, if we
are to be the moral conscious of the world
-that comes with social responsibilities as
well. Our long history of bribes to foreign
countries and their military leaders needs
to be replaced with a very long extended
helping hand.
Who has the courage to propose a true
Peace Corps. An all volunteer army of
young people. Join and you get your col-
lege loans cut in half. Spend two-hears
helping the people of the world with their
farming, health care, etc. and we can
change the world as we know it today.
Who has the courage to run with this.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. Golden
West College (GWC) Foundation Patrons
will hold their 9th annual Chefs for Schol-
arships, an event to raise money for student
scholarships, on Sunday, September 14th on
the beautiful GWC campus from 4 7pm.
Advanced tickets are $45 for adults, $20 for
students with ID and children 12 and under
are free. Ticket prices at the door will be $50
for adults and $25 for students.
This family event will feature 30 local
restaurants, wineries and breweries serving
signature food and beverage samples for the
guests. In addition to the delicious food
there will be live music (Swing Kittens), a
Maui opportunity drawing, raffle and silent
auction as well as a variety of games and ac-
tivities for children, featuring a mobile video
game theater.
As well as supporting our returning veter-
ans, the Patrons will be funding scholarships
for: Emancipated Foster Youth for continu-
ing education, local high school graduating
students, returning GWC students, and a
Golden Chef Award for a GWC alum for
continued education. This is one of the most
important campus events of the year, says
Wes Bryan, President of GWC, its fun for
the whole family and provides scholarship
support to GWC students.

Members from the Seal Beach Police Department, Maca-
roni Grill and the Jack Rogers family presented today the
Childrens Hospital of Orange County Neurology Depart-
ment with a donation in the amount of $5,480.96.
Penny Arvalo, staff writer for the Patch shares a heath
warming moment in life that touches a lot of kids with serious
medical issues..."This donation came to fruition because of
the hard work, dedication and donations from our Seal Beach
residents and friends/family in the Los Alamitos and Cypress
cities.
Recently, hundreds of supporters arrived at the Macaroni
Grill 12380 Seal Beach Blvd., Seal Beach, for a an evening
where Seal Beach police officers and Macaroni Grill Staff
served dinner. A portion of all the sales and tips were then
collected and now gifted to the CHOC Foundations Neuro-
logical Floor."
It all began a few years ago when Seal Beach Police Offi-
cers befriended a local McGaugh Elementary students
named, Jack Rogers and his family.
"Jack is an outstanding inspiration to our community and
is only 10 years old. At the age of 4 years old, Jack contracted
Viral Encephalitis which resulted in a diagnosis called, Med-
ically Intractable Epilepsy. In short, Jack suffers anywhere
from 5-20 seizures a day and there is currently no cure.
After visiting him post-surgery in the Childrens Hospital
of Orange County, his only wish was to have more toys on
his floor to play with. Because of this wish, it was our desire
to change this with whatever donations we could raise. With
that, we appreciate all of your support and none of this could
have been accomplished without your continued support.
Y
ou may have noticed quite a bit of activity at
along Pacific Coast Highway between First and
Huntington Streets. Pacific City is off and run-
ning, and were happy to keep you up to
date and share the latest from Pacific City
the next exciting project taking place
in the Downtown.
Construction is underway on the site
of the retail space, which will host more
than 50 shops and boutique retailers, as
well as Pasea, the 250-room boutique re-
sort hotel, which broke ground in June.
Thus far, DJM Capital Partners, the de-
velopers and owners of Bella Terra,
have announced two major tenants for
the retail space opening in 2015. Fitness
club Equinox, will occupy 28,000
square feet, and Bear Flag Fish Co, will
be among the second
floor tenants housed within a
35,825 square foot area called Lot
579. DJM considers Lot 579 (named for the life-
guard tower across the street), to be the retail cen-
ters anchor tenant, and will feature several other
unique eateries and retailers operating in a more in-
timate setting.
The hotel, Pasea, which translates from the Spanish
to take a stroll, is scheduled for completion in 2016.

deck and bar over-

Local Chefs
I
n the wake of an increased number of coyote
sightings and attacks on animals in Seal Beach
and neighboring cities, the City of Seal Beach
is hosting a regional coyote meeting on Wednes-
day, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. at McGaugh El-
ementary School auditorium located at 1698
Bolsa Avenue in Seal Beach.
To effectively address this regional concern, the
City is partnering with a variety of agencies, in-
cluding the Cities of Garden Grove, Los Alamitos,
Cypress, and Rossmoor. In addition, representa-
tives from the Naval Weapons Station, Joint
Forces Training Base, Orange County Animal
Care Services, Department of Fish and Wildlife,
and Long Beach Animal Care Services will be on
hand to share their experiences with urban coyotes
and how they dealt with the issue including the management strategies that worked and those that were less suc-
cessful.
The City encourages community members to attend the meeting and to ask questions of the panel regarding the
material presented.

opened last week
and there are a number of changes from last year
for the most popular collegiate sport. The most
talked about change is The College Football Play-
off, a Final Four style postseason format which has
replaced the controversial BCS, where the two
best teams in the land as voted by polls and com-
puter rankings faced off for the national
championship.
But dont count on the new format elimi-
nating controversy. Selection of the four
playoff participants will be determined by a
13-person committee, fraught with the same
human biases and subject to the same intense
politicking that pollsters and fans are all too
familiar with. Instead of complaints from the
second and third place teams, which were du
rigueur under the previous system, be pre-
pared for grousing from the fifth and sixth
place teams.
The new playoff format isnt likely to be
the only controversial change to the new sea-
son. In an effort to chase additional revenue to fuel
their seemingly insatiable appetite for higher ex-
penditures, more colleges began selling alcoholic
beverages at football games this fall. Chalk this
one up to inevitable.
Historically, most colleges have resisted the
temptation to sell beer and wine at athletic events
for reasons including culture, tradition, religion,
philosophy and fear of backlash should an incident
occur that was fueled by excessive alcohol con-
sumption. Contrary to the majority, a number of
schools have sold alcohol for years, most of them,
such as Louisville, Houston, Memphis and Tulane,
located in large, liberal, urban areas. How can any-
one in New Orleans, for example, criticize Tulane
for making money from alcohol sales given the de-
bauchery for which the citys renowned Bourbon
Street is so famous?
But times are changing. West Virginia Univer-
sity, located in conservative Morgantown where the
student population exceeds the local populace,
began serving alcohol at football games in 2011. It
made nearly $520,000 from beer and wine sales in
its first season, according to an AP report. While
that wont cover the $2.7 million the school will
pay football coach Dana Holgorsen this year, its
not chump change either. Another rural school,
Kansas State University located in Manhattan, is
one of 21 schools who own and operate their own
stadium that sold alcoholic beverages in general
seating areas prior to this year.
Beyond the money, there may be additional ben-
efits to selling alcoholic beverages in campus ath-
letic facilities. West Virginia claims it had fewer
incidents of rowdy fan behavior related to binge-
drinking outside the stadium prior to games. With
beer available inside, apparently a number of fans
no longer felt the need to guzzle multiple beverages
prior to approaching the entry gate.
The sale of alcohol on campus will remain con-
troversial. But one thing is certain: All schools
will find the additional revenue potential difficult
to resist.

present was indeed yes. In fact all agreed they
would use their final moments to surf that one last
big wave before their inevitable demise. Shortly
thereafter the swearing of the preposterous oath

Chucks shop, broke the silence with; What if you
make it? All of us turned to him and stared
blankly at him. As if he had suddenly awaked us
from our romantic fantasy of our heroic last ride,
and the perspective Huckleberry Finn send offs we
would no doubt be present for, and began a laugh
so hearty we were all shades of blue before we
were through!
No one had even considered the fact you may
have indeed survived the massive final wave, we
after all were thinking what heros we would be, and
just how much we be missed and so on. Well not one
of us addressed the original question beyond that. I
suppose if you anyone of us was to surf a one hun-
dred foot wave, then I assume whatever we were
suffering from would have been miraculously cured
by the time we reached shore again, and left it at that,
a solemn right reserved for fantasy, and daydreamers
alike
We still reflect on that day from time to time, and
just a few days ago while I was placing an order for
my custom gun [big wave surfboard] from Mike at
the shop, he reminded me of the day when the pro-
posed Dead Men of Huntington Beach did in fact
tell tales as so many have done before, but this day
they chose a life of laughter, and ease of spirit like
only surfers can. To all my Brothers at HB, Live,

the traffic count at an unlisted community in-
tersection might not be as high as other inter-
sections... people have died there for perhaps
design circumstances that do not log statisti-
cally. Then, community members show up to

unlisted intersection because a loved one died
there or a neighbor or friend was killed there!
The council votes and replaces a staff picked
intersection with a community favored one;
Right or Wrong?
Right, in my mind, because it was driven by
an affected group of constituents who at-
tempted the change process legally, profession-
ally and locally. You be the judge, as you need
to be the judge on the path the current city
council is on. Almost a Nanny Government
where 4 of the 7 probably feel that they know
best, they believe that they speak for the major-
ity of the 200,000 residents even though they
might not have been asked their opinion.
We will profile the council candidates that re-
spond to our bi-annual Political Campaign
Q&A. Tragically, for us... A "No Response" is
sometimes borne out of either a sense of signif-
icant self-confidence or perhaps arrogance. I
don't know. You need to be the judge.
If you support the Ban philosophy, then vote
accordingly...If not, there are numerous oppor-
tunities to protest with your vote as well.
How about a Ban on Hate...city wide, city
council wide...as a community!

We must really be
swimming in electronic
waste, what with all the
iPhones and other devices that are
so common. How is this all being dealt with?

With electronic equipment and gadgets the fastest growing
waste stream in many countries, how to deal with so-called
e-waste may in fact be one of the most pressing environ-
mental problems of the 21st century. According to BCC Re-
search, consumers around the world purchased 238.5 million
TVs, 444.4 million computers and tablets and a whopping
1.75 billion mobile phones in 2012 alone. Most of us discard
such items within three years of purchase, and this is driving
the global growth in e-waste by some eight percent a year.
Meanwhile, a recent study conducted by researchers from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on behalf of the
United Nations found that the growth in demand for and
manufacturing of new electronics will result in a 33 percent
increase in e-waste globally between 2012 and 2017.
But why is e-waste any more of a problem than old fash-
ioned garbage? Some of the materials in personal electron-
ics, such as lead, mercury and cadmium, are hazardous and
can release dangerous toxins into our air and water when
burned or deposited in landfills improperly, reports the non-
profit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). And
throwing away metal components, like the copper, gold, sil-
ver and palladium in cell phones and other electronics, leads
to needless mining for new metals.
Today some 80 percent of unwanted electronics are dis-
posed of improperly. E-waste is either discarded or exported
to emerging nations, where open-air burning and acid baths
are used to reclaim precious metals and other ele-
ments, reports Maureen ODonnell in EHS Jour-
nal. The lack of proper controls in such countries,
she says, has led to elevated lead levels in children
and heavy metals pollution of soil and water. As a
result, she adds, we now stand at the forefront of a
growing environmental catastrophe.
The good news is that many nations have enacted
new laws to hold manufacturers responsible for the
future e-waste created by their products. The Euro-
pean Union has led the way with its Waste Electrical
and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive,
which calls on electronics makers to take back
their products for recycling when consumers up-
grade to something new, and restricts European
countries from exporting or importing e-waste.
Japan and China are among other countries that
have passed similar laws.
The U.S. government has yet to follow suit, but
the Electronics Takeback Coalition (ETC) reports
that 21 U.S. states have implemented their own
take back laws, and several other states are con-
sidering similar legislation. Meanwhile, environ-
mentalists continue to pressure Congress to consider
similar legislation at the national level, given espe-
cially that Americans are the world leaders in generating e-
waste.
Additionally, many manufacturers are adopting voluntary
e-waste recycling certification standards. One is the e-Stew-
ards program, which helps those looking to dispose of obso-
lete electronics identify recycling options that adhere to high
standards of environmental responsibility and worker protec-
tion. Another program, R2 Certification, run by the non-profit
SERI, is supported by several large manufacturers, including
DirecTV and Microsoft. Consumers can do their parts by
choosing manufacturers that embrace so-called producer
pays electronics recycling through participation in one of
these programs.

ohn Trinidad, a wine industry attorney who
lives on Main Street in Napa, was cleaning up
from a party when his home started shaking.
"At first, I thought it was a little roller," he ex-
plained. "But then, it got pretty violent, with full-
on shaking. I had already braced myself, so just
kind of rode it out -- but heard a lot of things crashing
around me. After the shaking stopped, I looked around
and yep, a lot had come out of the cupboard -- broken
glass, broken plates, lots of things on the ground."
The 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck southern
Napa County on August 24 was the strongest Califor-
nia had experienced in 25 years.
The media quickly turned its attention to wine -- and
the economic impact of the quake. Although Napa Val-
ley accounts for less than 4 percent of America's total
wine production, it's the country's best-known wine re-
gion. And it's a big moneymaker. The region's wine in-
dustry has an economic impact of $50 billion annually.
At its heart, though,
Napa Valley is a working-
class, farming community.
And in the wake of the
earthquake, brand Napa
Valley -- $300 "cult"
Cabernets, Michelin-
starred restaurants, and
the like -- was overshad-
owed by kinship and kind-
ness.
Alexandra Evans
moved to the region from
Washington, D.C., just
nine months ago. She was
floored by the generosity
she witnessed.
"People up north -- Calistoga, St. Helena -- really
weren't affected. But they were offering to help in any
way they could," she said. "Coming from a big city,
you don't necessarily expect to know your neighbors.
Here, people loaded up their cars with food and water
to help neighbors they'd never even met. The presence
of community was impressive."
Evans proceeded to talk about all the activity she saw
on social media.
On Facebook, Back Room Wines, a wine shop in
downtown Napa, urged locals to bring by "stained and
slightly damaged bottles" to share. "Talk about your
week if you want, or just listen," the invite urged.
Cadet Wine & Beer Bar, a popular hangout that lost
more than $15,000 in wine, took to Facebook and In-
stagram to invite locals by for beer. "We lost some wine
but the beer taps are untouched," the owners urged.
"Come by today for beer
on us."
As vintners posted
heartbreaking photos, lo-
cals responded with an
all-hands-on-deck men-
tality. "Wineries offered
tank space, barrels, fork-
lifts -- even just elbow
grease -- to the wineries
that were hit," Evans con-
tinued.
Area wine writers like
Elaine Brown of Hawk
Wakawaka Wine Re-
views and Fred Swan of
NorCal Wine brought attention to charities offering
housing, food, and other crisis relief.
Esteemed winemaker Steve Matthiasson tweeted
devastating photos. The
earthquake sent all his
2013 barrels tumbling to
the ground and forced
his family to move out
of their 1905 farmhouse.
Yet when the Matthias-
sons turned to their cus-
tomers for support, it
was to raise money for
the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund
through a limited-release wine.
As wine writer John Brooks noted in an email to
friends, "This strikes me as extraordinary. At a time
when they've suffered significant damage to their home
and their business (just look at the pictures), the Matthi-
assons have chosen to prioritize others ahead of them-
selves."
Stories like this abound.
After touring Napa's wreckage for much of the morn-
ing on August 24, John Trinidad rested on his front
porch with friends. As stories were shared, Matt Nau-
mann, assistant winemaker at Failla, walked by with
his young daughter.
"How'd you guys do?" Trinidad asked.
"Last night, we wiggled!" replied Naumann's daugh-
ter, dancing to animate the answer.
For Trinidad, the response was deeply insightful.
"To see a kid with that reaction was perfect," he ex-
plained. "We're all healthy. No one is hurt. Napa is an
amazingly strong, resilient community. We'll be okay."

What Should You Say and What You Should Not Say
To a Car Salesman!
A
OL Staff offers some pretty good tips about buying
vehicles from the historic car sal;es person..."Ap-
prehensive about shopping for a new car? Afraid
you'll say the wrong thing to a car dealer that will give him
the upper hand in the price battle? Shopping for a new car,
or even a used one, doesn't have to be that kind of nerve-
jangling roll of the dice that it was many years ago.
For starters, the advent of the Internet allows car shop-
pers to go into battle armed with more information today
than ever. Sites like AOL Autos make it quite easy to get
basic information that includes MSRP, features, options and
reviews on any car you might have your eye on before you
visit a car dealer, rather than having to trust the dealer to
educate you.
With more car dealers out there now than ever before,
consumers also now have more leverage. It's a common
consumer tactic to play two car dealers off each other, or
in auto dealer parlance, "cross-shopping," to see which one
can give you the best deal.
But it still helps to know what to say and what not to say
as you and the car dealer play the game of haggling the
price, because, you could still say the wrong thing to give
the car dealer a leg up on the negotiations.
We spoke to an AAA car-buying expert and an auto
dealer to find out what NOT to say once you're on a car
dealer's turf and what TO say.
"Under no circumstances should you start talking about
monthly payments," says John Nielson, Director of Auto
Repair and Buying for AAA. "You should just focus on ne-
gotiating the purchase price. Once you start talking about
monthly payments, everything gets confusing, because sud-
denly you don't know if that's the payment for 24 months,
or 36 months, or how much of that would include interest
charges if you're financing the purchase through the
dealer."
Nielson's advice on this matter is supported by a sales
representative at a Virginia car dealership, who agreed to
speak to us on the condition of anonymity. "After all, I don't
want to shoot myself in the foot," he says. So we'll call him
Bill.
"Dealers will absolutely try to get you to negotiate
monthly payments instead of purchase price, because we
make more money if we do it that way," says Bill. "We'll
say something like, 'I can get you into this car for $300 a
month,' but we won't say how many months that's for. If
we can get you to commit to a longer payment structure
and we're doing the financing, we're making more money
off you in interest payments."
Fundamentally, says Bill, "dealerships like to move
money around. So it probably also is not in the buyer's best
interest to mention right up front that he or she has a car
they want to trade in. Because once we know that, we know
you're looking to get as much money as you can out of the
trade-in."
Bill explains how getting more
currency for your trade in can be a
smokescreen that won't save you
money in the end. "We'll assess the
value of the car, and if it's worth,
say, $15,000, we'll tell you we'll
give you that amount," he says.
"But once we do that, we'll be
pretty hard to budge on the sale
price of the car. So in that instance,
you'll probably end up paying full
MSRP for your new car."
Bill informs us, "These days,
with CarMax being so prevalent,
consumers might want to consider
not trading their car in at all, and
just selling it via CarMax. You will
almost always get a better price for
it if you sell it than what a dealer
will give you in trade-in value."
Nielson of AAA has similar ad-
vice on this front, although he
comes at it from a slightly different
perspective. "It's OK to mention that you might want to
trade your car in, because you don't want to get caught
telling them something that isn't true. But just tell the sales
rep, 'We'll talk about that later, let's just focus on the price
of the new car for now'," says Nielson.
"Anytime you add the trade-in value for your existing
car into the negotiation of the price for the new car, the
numbers start moving back and forth, and you could end
up being confused about how much you're really paying
for the new car," warns Nielson. "The number one way
consumers can go wrong in this scenario is to lose sight of
the purchase price of the vehicle, which is the number you
are in best position to negotiate."
Nielson laughs, "You probably also shouldn't tell them
that you recently had a car repossessed, or that you have
bad credit. That kind of information probably won't work
in your favor."
And while it may be unwise to tell a dealer you're des-
perate for a car -- information that can bring out the shark
in any sales rep -- there's nothing wrong with telling the car
dealer that you're definitely looking to a buy a car in the
next few days. "Face it, dealers are trying to make a living,"
says Nielson. "So if they think you're just out kicking tires
and are six months away from making a purchase, they
might think you're wasting their time, so you won't get as
much attention from them."
But back to the financing question: Bill reveals, "One
tactic dealers sometimes take is getting the buyer lost in the
numbers, by asking them, 'Where do you want to be?
What's your budget?' And then once we know that, we start
talking about financing through us, which is a way we
make a lot of money on the back end of the deal.
That's why Nielson advises prospective car buyers, "Do
your homework, find out what incentives are out there, and
use a payment calculator you can find online so you're ed-
ucated on how much car you can get into for the price you
want to pay."
Also, it's best to get preapproved for a car loan before
you even walk into the Thunderdome -- er, the dealer show-
room. Bill says, "That way, if we know up front you're pre
approved to get your financing elsewhere, we're not going
to try and hit you with a high interest rate. That's what a lot
of dealers will try to do without even knowing what your
credit rating is."
One issue to factor in is whether or not you intend to pay
cash. (If only all of us should be so lucky to have that kind
of coin lying around.) If you do intend to pay cash, Bill tells
us that's something you may not want to say right up front.
"When dealers are negotiating the purchase price, they
anticipate making money on the back end, via financing,"
Bill explains. "So if you tell them up front you're paying
cash, the dealer knows he has no opportunity to make
money off you from financing. So, he might not be as
moveable on purchase price if he already knows he isn't
going to make any money off you from financing."
This likely holds true if you've been preapproved for fi-
nancing. It's best not to reveal your hand on the outset that
you don't plan to use dealer financing before you negotiate
the vehicle price.
It's not necessarily bad form for the buyer to tell the car
dealer up front that he's strongly considering financing the
car through the dealer -- and then, later, saying, "I changed
my mind," after negotiating the purchase price.
"The buyer CAN get a better deal if he does that," con-
cedes Bill, "because all along, in that scenario, the dealer
is maybe knocking something off of the top of the purchase
price thinking he's going to get some interest out of you on
the financing."
Finally, confirms Bill, "It's OK to say you've been to
other dealers, because cross-shopping between two dealers
is always a good idea. From the dealer standpoint, customer
service is what separates one dealership from another
dealer who sells the same brand. Some customers are will-
ing to pay more money if they were treated right during the
purchase process, because that's a pretty good indicator that

I
f you didnt think the government charged a
fee for the majority of mortgages obtained in
the United States, youd be misinformed.
The government-owned agencies, Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac, charge a guarantee fee (g-fee)
for every loan they back. This fee is hidden from
consumers by being built into the rate. If the
government raises g-fees, consumers will pay
higher mortgage rates. If the government lowers
g-fees, mortgage rates will go down.
Fannie and Freddies key role is to insure
mortgage loans made by the banks. The pur-
pose of a g-fee is to
build a reserve ac-
count that is able to
cover losses from
loans that go bad or
default. The reason
the government
took over Fannie
and Freddie in 2008
was because these
agencies did not
have adequate re-
serves to cover the
substantial losses
incurred during the
housing crash.
When the reserves
ran out, the govern-
ment stepped in.
Since the bailout,
the government has passed legislation to make
it more difficult to qualify for Fannie and Fred-
die backed loans, and has also increased the
amount of g-fees. An argument could be made
that one or the other would have been sufficient,
but well leave that for another article.
As for the amount of the increase, g-fees have
more than doubled since the government
takeover. Most of the increases were to further
build up Fannie and Freddies reserves, but oth-
ers were used to generate revenue to fund other
parts of the government, including an immigra-
tion bill. And now the debate is on in Washing-
ton whether to further increase the g-fee or not.
One side of the debate wants the g-fee in-
creased to reduce the market share carried by
Fannie and Freddie. Currently Fannie and Fred-
die backed loans feature the lowest rates in the
industry. Because these loans carry government
backing, there is little risk to the lender. Less risk
translates to lower rates. Loans that do not carry
this same government backed insurance plan
feature slightly higher rates. The plan to increase
g-fees would reduce Fannie and Freddies foot-
print by making them less competi-
tive, thereby increasing the share of
private lending.
The plan to raise g-fees is
backed by the American
Bankers Association. Of
course, they are the ones
who stand to profit the
most by a transition to pri-
vate lending.
Consumer protection
groups are opposed to any
further g-fee in-
creases. Increasing the
fees, and thereby in-
creasing mortgage
rates, would put addi-
tional financial bur-
dens on the American
middle class. Raising
rates would also jeopardize a housing recovery
which is already extremely fragile.
For now, the current director of the FHFA (the
agency overseeing both Fannie and Freddie),
Mel Watt, does not ap-
pear to be in favor of
any further g-fee in-
crease. Since taking
over the FHFA in De-
cember, 2013, Mr.
Watt has already sus-
pended a g-fee in-
crease proposed by his
predecessor. He further
went on to state, I
dont think its FHFAs
role to contract the
footprint of Fannie and
Freddie. At least for
now, the head person
in charge seems to be
on the side of Ameri-
can homeowners.
