Question:
In above mentioned article author has discussed two types of socialization, institutionalized
socialization and individualized socialization. What do you think; organizations should
follow individualized socialization or institutionalized socialization to promote Team Work?
Support your answer with logical reasoning.
Teamwork I s an I ndividual Skill said by Christopher Avery. In todays knowledge
economy, learning to work with others may be the most important skill. This
promotes productive relationships by assuming personal responsibility for productive
relationships, socializing, aligning individuals around a shared purpose, building trust
and developing a collaborative mindset. Successful teamwork through an
individualized socialization can be achieved more easily than an institutionalized
socialization. Institutionalized socialization consists of collective, formal, sequential,
fixed, serial, and investiture tactics. Whereas, individualized socialization consists of
individual, informal, random, variable, disjunctive, and divestiture tactics which help
to create free and innovative approach towards organizational tasks.
I ndividualized socialization encourages newcomers to reflect their authentic best
selves on the job. Authentic self-expression at work is to help them identity and
leverage their best selves, or who they are when they are at their best. At early pivotal
stages in relationship development with team members in organization, individual
react positively when an employer encourages them to represent themselves along the
lines of their authentic best selves. This encouragement leads to greater feelings of
connection with colleagues and more positive reactions to the employment
relationship. And because individual feel they are using their signature strengths at
work, they experience greater satisfaction, lower stress and less emotional burnout
which lead to a better corporation with members and willingness to perform better in
a team.
Conclusion: Individual socialization can be concluded as a positive psychology which
suggests that organization invests more on personal identities which lead to
individuals to use more energy in their work and put efforts to reach goals together as
a team. On the other hand, individuals who alter or mute their unique values or
perspectives in order to fit into organizations dominant culture create a sense of
alienation for themselves and must divert cognitive resources to cope with identity
conflict.
