Hidden Power Breeding By Darren Uddenberg

Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokmon! My name is Darren! People call me the Pokmon Know-it-all! This world is
inhabited by creatures called Pokmon! For some people, Pokmon are pets. Others use them for fights. Myself...I breed
Pokmon so as to have coverage theyre not supposed to have because Im tired of using the same old OU Pokmon (Im
looking at your, Greninja!)

Now, before we begin, I assume by reading this guide you know the following:
Basic knowledge of the meta game (thats competitive battling for all you less savvy players)
Basic knowledge of Pokmon X and Y breeding mechanics
Basic understanding of IVs, Natures, and abilities
Before we get started, ensure you have the following materials:
Destiny Knot: When this item is held by a Pokmon, if the holder becomes Infatuated, the Pokmon it is attracted to
also becomes Infatuated.
As of Pokmon X & Y, this item, when attached to a Pokmon while breeding, will cause the baby Pokmon to inherit 5 IVs
from its parents
Everstone: if a Female Pokmon or a Ditto holds this in the Breeding Centre and breeds, there is a 50% chance of the
offspring retaining the parents Nature , and In X and Y, 100 % of the time.
A Pokmon with Flame Body: Eggs hatch quicker
A Pokemon with HM Fly.
A Talonflame.
A Ditto with your desired Hidden Power Spread (more on this in a second)
Rare Candy (Optional)

But Darren, you might ask, what if I dont have a Hidden Power Ditto? Well good question. The easy answer is that it is
POSSIBLE. The honest answer is that trying to HP breed WITHOUT the appropriate Ditto is still possible, but will most likely
consume about as much time as getting yourself a Hidden Power Ditto, so I wont be covering that in my guide, BUT, if you
follow with me to the end of this guide, Im confident youll understand the process enough to fill in the blanks, should you
choose to do it this way.
So let us continue, shall we?

Hp Breeding: demystified

Im going to do my best here to turn one of the most confusing and misconceived game mechanics, into something you not
only understand, but have concrete KNOWLEDGE on exactly what makes Hidden power tick. I want you to know it like walking,
brushing your teeth, or the intro to Fresh Prince of Bel Air!
Up until Gen 6, Hidden Power breeding was an almost insurmountable endeavor. But with the Introduction of Pokmon X and
Y, Game Freak has introduced a far more balanced and simplified method.
So Ill explain the changes AS we go through the process, so you truly grasp how absolutely blessed we are this Gen.
The Move: Hidden Power

Generations II to V
Hidden Power inflicts damage using a type and base power determined by the user's IVs.
Hidden Power can receive same-type attack bonus. For instance, a Bug-type Pokmon will receive same-type attack bonus
when using a Bug-type Hidden Power. Although Hidden Power is Normal-type in the game's data, a Normal-type Hidden
Power is not obtainable. Because of this, a pure Normal-type Pokmon will never receive same-type attack bonus when
using Hidden Power unless it also has Normalize as its Ability.

Generation VI
Hidden Power's base power is now 60, and like in previous generations, its type is determined by the user's IVs. As the
method for determining the type of Hidden Power is the same as Generation III to V, a Fairy-type Hidden Power is not
possible.
Tired of reading, yet? I hope not. Weve only just begun.
So as per Bulbapedia, so far we know that Hidden Powers type is determined by the Pokmons IVs. Back in the previous
Gens, a Pokmons IVs not only determined the TYPE of Hidden Powers attack, but its BP (Base Power). That means that if a
Pokmon had a PERFECT combination of 31 and 30 IVs, Hidden Powers BP would be 70, whereas Pokmon with flawed IV
spreads would have a varying BP of 69 to the lowest: 30.
Now, if you READ my excerpt from Bulbapedia instead of just skimmed it, youd notice that it said Hidden Power's base
power is now 60. THIS is our blessing Game Freak gave us. Though it nerfed our BP down 10 points, it makes HP breeding a
much, much simpler, more consistent process (and also always puts Hidden Power within Technician range, an ability some
Pokmon possess that increases the BP of moves with 60BP or less to a boosted 1.5x)

So what are these mystical, megikarpal IV spreads? Stay with me here, this is the fun part.

Thats a big list, and a hella confusing one at that! Why is there more than ONE spread per type? THIS IS WHERE THE SECRET
LIES! Youre about to become ONE with The Matrix. You ARE THE ONE, NEO!
So for an example, lets break down HP Ice (Since its the most popular type for HP)

Now, as far as the spreads themselves, it confuses even ME as to exactly why theres so many damn spreads, but
from experience, I can tell you the most common (and superior) HP Ice Spread is 31/30/30/31/31/31 because
Hidden Power is a Special type attack. That means any Pokmon utilizing it for the most part, probably wont be
using its attack stat. The spread also, no matter which you choose, seem to put a dent in an essential IV by one
point.

So which do we choose?

This is actually way easier than it seems. Just pick the spread that affects your Pokmons build the least. So if Youre a
speedy sweeper, stay away from that last Spread since it takes away an IV from your speed stat. If youre using a tank
build, stay away from the second last Spread, since it takes away an IV from your HP Stat.

Now practically speaking, youre most likely going to be using whatever spread your Ditto has (the one you probably JUST
managed to acquire) so this whole section is moot anyways. But, if youre genning these Dittos from scratch, or trading for
a specific spread, keep all this in mind.

Now, one last thing to TRULY understand how Hidden Power spreads work, there are, in actuality, another 30 different IV
spreads for each of the above type spreads. Yes, I know youre definitely confused now. Dont be. This is actually the part
where all of this is about to click.Anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of Binary code (the language of computers) might
have already seen the pattern. For you non-Sheldon Cooper types, this is the Blips and Bloops, or ones and zeros that form
the core of all computer programming.

To better explain, let me show you the LOWEST IV spread of our HP Ice spreads.

Oh ya, NOW were talking like Neo!

So, basically, weve replaced every 30 IV with zero, and every 31 IV with 1. But why?

The WHY is very simple! No matter the specific IV numbers in the spread (e.i. 1, 3, 5; 0, 2, 4, 6 etc.) the basic pattern of the
spread is always the same. Its a combination of EVEN and ODD IV stats.


So a Hidden Power Ice spread of:

31 / 30 / 30 / 31 / 31 / 31

can actually be seen as

odd / even / even / odd / odd / odd

BOOOOOOOOM!

MYSTERY SOLVED!

Now that you understand this, we can grasp a little better how this works. This basically means that a perfect 30/31 IV
spread is indistinguishable in type from 28/29 spread, or a 16/ 1 spread, or a 1/0 spread, or any combination of these
numbers, because in essence, theyre all still just combinations of EVEN and ODD numbers.


Now that youve graduated from the basics of Hidden Power University, Lets get to the actual process of breeding itself.

Step 0: Preparation
So before we even begin, we need to have a goal. Which Pokmon are we breeding for, whats their nature going to be?
Their moveset? Their Ability? And of course, their Hidden Power type?

Since this beautiful flower is one of my favorite new additions to the Pokmon universe, and since Ive already built some of
the most popular Hidden Power abusers prior to this guide (Im looking at you Manectric) lets go with Florges (because its
Gorgeous)
So Details:

Florges
Type: Fairy
Predicted Base Stats: 78 / 65 / 68 / 112 / 154 / 75
Abilities: Flower Veil (Prevents Grass-type allies from becoming statused)
Symbiosis (The Pokemon can pass an item to an ally)
Florgas@Leftovers
Flower Veil
Timid
4 Hp/ 252 SpA/ 252 SpE
IVs: 31/31/31/30/30/31
~ Calm Mind (TM 04)
~ Moonblast (Start)
~ Psychic (TM 29)

And just like that, with a little help from Google/Bulbapedia, we now have our goal, everything we need to know about our
chosen breeding project, in one place. Regardless of if youre Hidden Power breeding or not, this is actually the easiest way
to ensure you never muck up your breeding and miss vital egg or Generation specific moves.
Now with our goal, our knowledge of Hidden Powers, and our materials, the rest of this guide is a breeze (thankfully,
because my little fingers are tired of typing).

So FINALLY we begin!


Step 1: THE DAYCARE
Theres plenty of ways to start this process, while achieving the same results. The difference to me is efficiency. So for ME
personally STEP 1 should always be:


A Timid Florges (or prior evolutions, of course) with an IV spread of at
least
31/x/31/31/31/31
But preferably
31/31/31/31/31/31

Thats because we need to lock that nature down, mostly because we
cant guarantee that the Ditto were using to pass our Hidden Power
spread has the nature we need but more importantly, for the IVs. When we start hatching our eggs, even when we get
farther into this guide to the point where were checking IVs, were not going to be able to determine a flawed IV from our
target 30 IV unless we run EACH AND EVERY Pokmon through an IV Calculator, and remember what I said about efficiency?
So for the sake of said simplicity, were going to start with the best possible parents: a Flawless Hidden Power Ditto, and a
Flawless Florges.
That way, we can be certain that at the most, we only have to worry about two IVs being randomized at any one time (one
IV if you manage to breed yourself a perfect Florges first). This gives us the best possible chances of getting us a Florges
with our perfect Hidden Power spread, and from here onwards, were counting on lady luck to auto-generate the one stat
Florges doesnt need, ATTACK, while also hoping it falls within the proper spread (even or odd) to give us our Hidden Power.
So I give my Flabb the Everstone

31/x/31/31/31/31
And the Ditto the Destiny Knot

31/31/31/30/30/31

And give these two Pokmon to the sweet old couple running the daycare on Route 7!

Ride your Bicycle left and right, staying within the general vicinity of
Route 7 until you have 5 eggs in your party.
DO NOT HATCH THE EGGS YET!! Normally, I
would argue that this is a matter of
personal preference, but for the sake of
Hidden Power breeding, its not. This is all
about that magical word again: Efficiency
So, once you have your 5 eggs from the
Daycare man, throw them in your PC Box, and repeat, continuing this
process until you have one full box of eggs.

Step 2: HATCHING
The easiest step thus far. Simply use your Flame Body Talonflame to fly yourself to the
Center Square of Lumiose City (youll recognize this as the location oflemonts Gym)
and position yourself like the picture on the right.
Since Lumioses Square is a perfect circle that means that
simply activating your bicycle and locking the D-pad in one
direction will force your avatar into a never ending loop, sure
to cause nausea and vomiting for our poor trainer avatar.
So simply slide the circle pad to the left or the right, and let
your item of choice do all the work (Guitar picks are my
personal favorite).

Repeat this process until youve hatched your full box of eggs.

Step 3: First pass/checking your Hidden Power type
Now, got all your eggs hatched? Good! Before we move on though, we can do a little pre-filter of sorts.
For the case of my Florges, She only has One native ability, and one Hidden Ability (which Im not breeding for), so ability
really isnt an issue here, but for Pokmon who DO have varying Abilities, this is where we filter first.
If you are breeding for Hidden Abilities, you can release any Pokmon who do not have their Hidden Ability. We already
know theyre no good, so why waste time one them? Remember, efficiency! If however, we are breeding for a specific
NATIVE Ability, do not throw them away! Pokemon X and Y released a new consumable item this Generation, The Ability
Capsule!
As per Serebii:
Ability Capsule
The Ability Capsule is a new item introduced in Pokmon X & Y. This item is unique in that it allows for you to change the
ability of your Pokmon, which previously was stuck at birth. However, there are a few conditions to this item.
First off, it is a one-time use, and very expensive to get multiple of, requiring 200 BP in the Battle Maison. Second, it only
works on standard abilities. If you have a Pokmon with a Hidden Ability, the Ability Capsule will not work. The way the item
works is that if the Pokmon has got two standard abilities, it will simply switch the ability to the other one. If the Pokmon
only has one, say Charmander, the item shall not work due to Blaze being its only possible ability, but if you're using it on
say a Bronzor, it will allow you to switch between Levitate and Heatproof.


So , next step: Fly to Anistar City!
Once youve touched down, grab 5 of your potential HP babies, and
walk directly right of the Pokmon Center , last house on the left!
Once inside, look for this handsome man in the photo to the right!
Identical to the IV checker in Kiloude City, this fella will tell you
which Hidden Power yourPokemon have. So, select each Pokemon,
one by one, and write down their Hidden Power on a scrap sheet
of paper, similar to IV checking and set aside all Pokemon with
your desired Hidden Power In your PC box. Repeat this until youve
checked your entire box and are now left with ONLY your desired
Hidden Power (ground).
Next step: Kiloude City!


Step 4: Final Pass
This step needs no introduction. Grab your Talonflame, fly to Kiloude City, enter the Pokecenter, and greet the friendly and
familiar face of the IV checker (sweet hair, bro)

Grab your now dwindling selection of Hidden Power Pokmon and have the checker rate
his IVs.This is where all that knowledge I drilled into your head earlier applies.
Remember, the IV judge WILL NOT distinguish between a perfect 31 IV and an almost
perfect 30 IV, and that means we have no way of determining the difference between a
30 IV and a junk IV, but we CAN determine which of our lil rockstars has the correct ODD
numbered perfect 31 IV that fits our spread.

So for example, I am aiming for Hp Ground:
31/31/31/30/30/31
So if the IV judge gives me a Pokemon rated with
31/31/31/x/x/31
Its possible that its our Perfect Pokmon!
So have them rated, mark the IVs, and then grab the ones that have the exact right 31 IVs in their correct stats and move
along to the next step, but do no throw them away! Despite being flawed, theres a good chance the others, though
appearing very flawed, could potentially be flawed by a mere 2 IVs.
For example, an IV spread of
31/x/31/x/x/31 could ALSO be a Flawless Poke (since we dont need the Attack Stat)
Or
31/31/x/x/x/31 could just be 31/31/28/30/30/31, a mere 2 IVs difference in Defense.
so.IF our selected batch turn out to be duds during the next step, well come back and check the remaining batch, but for
now, on to Step 5.


Step 5: IV Calculator

Next, pop open your internet browser, and go to
http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/Calculators/IV.aspx
Youll be greeted by this wonderfully simple selection menu.


Prior to beginning your calculations, it is essential that any Pokmon having its IVs calculated be at minimum Level 20, and
you WILL have to also raise its level between lvl 20-26+ to determine its exact IVs.
Its also vital that you either track any EVs you may have gained should you choose to level them up the old fashioned way,
rather than using Rare Candies (if you dont have them, or enough of them), or wipe them prior to using an IV Calculator.
Also, you cant determine a Pokmons exact IVs at Level 1, and its not very accurate at any level under level 20. Most IV
calculators actually tell you to raise your Pokmons level to at least level 50 prior to calculating, and its this reason why I
sent you to Metalkids vs Serebii or others.
See, most average players arent aware, but a Pokmons stat gain per level, usually, isnt static. What that means is, from
level to level, the stat point increase per level is not consistent. Most Pokmon gain them variably, so at level 19 it may gain
a +2 to its Hp, at level 20 it may gain +0 Hp stat increase, etc. That means its hella hard for an IV calculator to determine a
Pokmons IVs at low level because it still hasnt gone through enough variable additions to its stat to determine the
difference between a 31 IV poke and a 0 IV poke. The easiest
way to understand this is by using IVs itself to explain the
process.

When a Pokmon has a 31 IV, it means that the Poke will have
that base stat of the Pokmon species with a 31 Point boost to
said stat, but heres the catch, it wont gain all 31 IV boosts
until LEVEL 100! And this is the genius that is Metalkids IV
Calculator! By allowing you to enter MULTIPLE LEVELS per
Pokmon, we dont need to know the Pokmons stats at level
50, or Level 100, because our calculator is actually tracking
the variations of stat gains and predicting it, so within a mere
few levels, it can give us calculations as accurate as they
would be if our Pokmon was at Level 100!

Wow! Of course, you could also just level them to 50 and also
potentially narrow down the exact IVs, its your choice based
off what items youre working with or how much patience you
have.






So, Once youve filled out all of the essential boxes from the previous screen cap, that includes:
Species name, Nature, Characteristic, Hidden Power type, and the IVs we DO currently know are perfect we can begin.
Start entering in the Pokmons level and stats in the chart, and
continue this process, narrowing down the possible IVs.
Once, completed, Push Calculate, and the Calculator will do just that:
calculate! Continue this process, entering the stats of the Next
helpful Level indicated in the row right beside Possible IVs until
the calculator stops giving you a range of IVs, but instead, gives you
the exact IV spread.
From here, if you didnt receive your Perfect
Pokmon,or the next closest thing, you can move onto
the others, and if they also dont yield the results
youre looking for, either try calculating our slightly
flawed choices we left behind from earlier, or start
from the beginning, back at the Daycare.
And thats it. Besides all the information in this guide,
you simply need a healthy dose of luck and patience, and you WILL get your perfect flawless Hidden Power Pokmon.
