No "ody could tell when the tantra cult originated# &t appeared as a parallel to yogic cult
which contained similar physiological postures and "reathing e0ercises and also the ultimate goal
o! sel! reali4ation and uni!ication with the supreme was the same# But they di!!ered radically as
regards the approach towards our desires, emotions and passions, especially those pertaining to
!ood and se0 ha"its# The yoga cult considered all our physical desires as (ices and suggested
repression and a"stention !rom the (ery "eginning# ,n the other hand tantra considered our
worldly desires as natural and endowed us "y god# They are (ices so long as they remain crude
and con!ined to transitory grati!ication o! desires# So the tantric is recogni4e them as reality and
without repressing them he are to "e ta"oo !ree a"out all desires !or se0 and !ood# 3is endea(or
should "e to transcend the crude aspect and get all these desires su"limated to a higher plain# &n
this way se0 ultimately transcends to a le(el where the physical union o! the male and the !emale
transcends to the cosmic union o! 5purusa5 and 5prariti5#
The !irst e(idence o! these esoteric cults dates "ac to a"out 6000 B#C# Sculptures o! yogic
postures ha(e "een disco(ered in e0ca(ations pertaining to &ndus (alley ci(ili4ation# The !irst
literary e(idence o! esoteric cult is $thar(a /eda which is not considered as pious "y the
orthodo0 /edic school# Later on there are innumera"le e(idences in Buddhist and 7ain te0ts and
the most systematic compilation in )atan'ali5s 58oga Sutra5 composed "etween 100 B#C# to 100
$#9# Tantric cult e(ol(ed and too (arious !orms under /a4ra'an and :en schools o! Buddhism,
and Sata, /aisna" and Sai"a schools o! 3induism# 9uring the !i!teenth century the 3at 8oga
cult emerged "orrowing hea(ily !rom the physical rites o! tantra#
The rigorous tantra cult o! the Sata school is popularly nown as tantrism in &ndia# This
school "elong to the /amachari Sata cult# Their descriptions o! inner human anatomy and
physiology are the closest to modern "io%scienti!ic disco(eries o! human economy# The tantra
cult de(eloped through o! millennia long trial and error "ut the tantrics had no scienti!ic
theoretical nowledge and so they mi0ed up mysticism and e0tra mundane speculati(e
philosophy with tantra# Their goal too was mystic, to resol(e the mystery o! li!e and death and
union with the creator o! the uni(erse#
)art%&&* Charas
Tantra cult descri"es se(en charas -wheels. in human "ody# Their locations are* coccy0
-muladhar chara., sacrum -swadhisthan chara., lum"ar close to the na(el -manipur chara.,
thoracic close to the heart -anahata chara., cer(ical close to the throat -(isuddha chara., "ase
o! the scull in "etween the angle o! the eyes and the pituitary gland -a'na chara. and top o! the
cere"rum -sahasrar chara.#
These charas rest at important ner(e ple0uses, ma'or points o! contact "etween the central,
sympathetic and parasympathetic ner(ous systems and some ma'or endocrine glands#
The tantrics lie the yogis "elie(e that our main source o! li!e !orce and (ital energy is
stored in a dormant !orm in the coccy0# They get this shrouded in mystery "y (isuali4ing that
goddess undalini as the source o! our li!e !orce lies dormant in the coccy0 in a three and a hal!
!old coil#
&n !act this is nothing "ut our li!e !orce in the !orm o! genetic code o! the 9N$# 2or ordinary
persons only an insigni!icant !raction o! the genetic possi"ilities "ecome mani!est# +oreo(er the
coccy0 region is one o! the two most important !eed"ac centers -the other is at the top o! the
cere"rum. !or the central and autonomic -sympathetic and parasympathetic. ner(ous systems#
Central ner(ous system relates to our conscious nowledge# But most o! the (ital !unctions
are per!ormed without our conscious nowledge "y the autonomic ner(ous systems# They are
lie an e0tremely power!ul computer mechanism with programs em"edded in the genetic code#
,nly a tiny !raction o! these programs are operati(e#
The tantric rites through "reathing control and auto suggestions endea(ors to retrie(e !rom
the hard disc stored in the coccy0 the dormant genetic possi"ilities# They, howe(er, de!ine this
as awaening o! the undalini goddess, the supreme mother goddess responsi"le !or gi(ing shape
to the palpa"le uni(erse and the energies that !low through this uni(erse# She is lying dormant in
three and a hal! coil inside the muladhar chara# ;e are to "rea her sleep and let her mo(e
upwards along the path o! the charas toward the sahasrar chara at the top o! the cere"rum
where the supreme god 5purusa5 -the inert and in(isi"le creator "y whose command and will the
supreme mother goddess has created this (isi"le uni(erse#. ;ith the ascent o! the mother
goddess along the path de!ined "y the charas the tantric ac<uires e0tra ordinary supernatural
powers and ultimately i! the goddess can get untied with the supreme god, the tantric "ecomes
one with the supreme and gets !ree !rom the cycle o! "irth and death#
The tantrics or yogis learnt a"out the immense power that could "e ac<uired "y the methods
o! postures, "reathing and meditation methods through millennia long trial and error process#
;ithout any scienti!ic nowledge, they ascri"ed this to "e the mani!estation o! power o! the
goddess undalini who a!ter "eing awaened mo(es upwards with continued e!!orts o! the tantric
and upper and upper she mo(es the man is endowed with more and more spectacular powers#
)art%&&&* Nadis -Ri(ers .
Breathing processes are (ery crucial to the awaening o! the undalini# The "reathing tracs
are called nadis -ri(ers.# Three ri(ers are (isuali4ed "y tantric cult# The !irst ri(er ida starts !rom
the le!t side and the second ri(er pingala !rom the right side o! the muladhar chara and the third
ri(e susumna passes along the spinal column# They cross at each chara, ida and pingala
alternating sides# &da passes through the le!t nostril and crossing the a'na chara reaches the
sahasrar chara !rom the right side# )ingala on the other hand, passes through the right nostril
and crossing the a'na chara reaches the sahasrar chara !rom the le!t side# Susumna unites with
them !rom the middle#
These nadis -ri(ers. may "e compared with the sympathetic, parasympathetic and central
ner(ous systems# &t is "elie(ed that with tantric practices the undalini !orce rises along the
susumna ri(er toward the cere"rum#
Now in reality with the rigorous "reathing, postures, meditation and auto suggestions our
dormant genetic possi"ilities open up gradually and we ha(e gradual access to the hitherto
autonomic ner(ous systems# +ore and more we ha(e command o(er the autonomic system along
the spinal column !rom coccy0 to sacral, sacral to lum"er and so on our latent genetic
possi"ilities open up more !ully#
)art%&/* Se0, 1reed and 2ailure
2rom the (ery "eginning o! this awaening the tantric e0periences tremendous energy and
power which the ignorant person considers as supernatural# +a'ority o! the tantrics !ail a!ter the
initial achie(ements and "ecause o! their degeneration they cannot continue !urther practices
properly# Their minds do not ele(ate in con!ormity with the ele(ation o! the genetic possi"ilities#
The most important reason is the !reedom !rom ta"oos resulting in a"'ect surrender to passions#
The yogis !ail "ecause o! ruthless repression o! natural desires and tantrics !ail "ecause o! o(er
indulgence o! these desires#
The most important hindrance is se0# Se0 is the most power!ul aspect o! our (ital !orce as
nature demands !rom us in the !irst place that we procreate !or continuation o! the species#
There!ore the initial success o! tantric practice is accompanied "y empowerment o! li"ido and
se0ual capa"ilities and the power to attract the !emales into se0 orgies# So the tantric is carried
away "y o"session with se0 and this disa"les him to continue !urther practice success!ully#
Some tantrics start maing a show o!! o! their ac<uired power through magic descri"ed "y
them as supernatural power# They attract people in large num"ers to "ecome his disciples# This
guru cult !ul!ils his greed !or money and power and he loses his way#
Now his limited power cannot "e enhanced through tantric practices "ut his greed demands
more capa"ilities and he now resorts to in(ented ideas o! worship lie o!!ering sacri!ices o!
animals and e(en human "eings to the goddess =ali whom the superstitious tantrics consider as a
"lood thirsty goddess#
)art%/* 2aleshood
Tantra practices lie all e0ercises, yogic asans and simple pranayams ha(e immense
"ene!icial e!!ects as they set !ree our dormant genetic potentials# But our outloo in this regard
should "e scienti!ic rather than mystic and superstitious# The cult has "een associated with
mysticism and supernatural# These are simply !alsehood#
There is nothing mystic a"out tantra power# The power we gain "y tantric rituals are simply
physiological lie all other e0ercises or asans# No goddesses or gods are in(ol(ed in the se(en
charas -ner(e ple0uses. and their "ase at coccy0# The dormant genetic potential at the coccy0 is
simply associated with our "io%genetic system and no undalini goddess is in(ol(ed here#
There are innumera"le in(ented stories and myths a"out supernatural powers gained "y
tantric practices# +ost o! them are !alse and creation o! the !igment o! imagination or hype
targeting at "e!ooling gulli"le people# The powers that could "e achie(ed "y tantric rituals are to
"e pro(ed "y e(idence o! actual achie(ements# )ower could "e achie(ed indeed# But how much
and what type o! power> This should "e "ased on real e0perience o! those who practice the
rituals consistently and with sincerity#
2or practicing these !iner asans, "reathing e0ercises, meditation and auto suggestions one
should not go to the !orests, hills or cemeteries, nor should one worship gods and goddesses#
Necessity o! rituals with human sulls or seletons, animal or human sacri!ices to the goddess,
alcoholic or hashish addiction, dirty se0 orgies all are the creation o! per(erted and deranged
minds# These criminal and unclean acti(ities do not help tantric achie(ements# ,n the contrary
they lead to !urther degeneration o! mental and physical health#
)art%/&* 3onesty and Ethics
3onesty and ethics should "e associated with tantric practices# The mind should "e ele(ated
to a higher ethical plain along with tantric achie(ements# ,therwise power achie(ed "y these
practices would "e harm!ul !or the society# )hysical e0ercises, "o0ing, martial art all these gi(e
one physical prowess# ?nless the mind is controlled, the strength thus ac<uired would turn a man
into a "ully and power!ul criminal# Similarly tantric powers could "e used to decei(e people "y
magic, and there"y seduce innocent !emales into dirty se0 orgies, or collect a large group o!
disciples with "lind !aith !or the guru and use these man power to earn money and social @
political power#
So ethics and morality are essential !or deri(ing social "ene!its !rom tantra# $ wea
unethical and dishonest person is not as harm!ul !or the society as a strong one# So ethics
-!reedom !rom greed !or money or social @ political power, 'ealousy, pride, se0ual o"session
etc#. is more important with one gaining power "y tantra practices than an ordinary person#
Be !ree !rom sel! deception "y associating myths, superstitions and mysticism with tantra
and don5t decei(e others "y magic, !alse stories o! achie(ements -which you yoursel! ha(e not
e0perienced. !or personal gain -money, social and political power, se0ual orgies etc#.
Remem"er that 5Bhati 8oga5 -sata, (aisna", su!i etc#. calls !or the most sacred and
magnanimous mind# $ssociation o! "hati -de(otion. with addiction to drugs and alcohol, dirty
se0 orgies and illing li(ing "eings -!or sacri!ice. in the name o! "hati rituals are gra(e sins
!rom the standpoint o! 5Bhati5 cult#
$ddiction results in derangement o! intellect and se0 orgies lead to per(ersion o! senses and
no yogic, tantric or de(otional achie(ement is possi"le with a deranged or per(erted mind# &n
sata 5Bhati5 cult =ali is concei(ed as the uni(ersal mother# Not only human "eings "ut also all
other li(ing "eings are her children# Can a mother "e thirsty !or her children5s "lood>
