CHAPTER 1
Introduction of the Body
A well designed and functional reward system is an efficient way to increase employee work
motivation. The appropriate type of reward is developed in accordance to the companys reward
philosophy, strategies and policy. However, it might be challenging to find the right way to
combine the companys integrated policies and practices together with the employees
contribution, skill and competence.
Employee motivation is one of the most essential parts in a companys development and success.
In order to maximize the overall performance of the company it is vital for an employer to
understand what motivates the employees and how to increase their job satisfaction. It might
however be challenging for a company to find out what motivates its employees, especially
because different people are motivated by different things.
Money is important in managing people. There is no doubt that we live in a monetary-motivated
world. Any amount of human relations cannot compensate for a lack of monetary reward.
According to Peter Ducker, if the reward is right, good human relations will give extra zest to a
team, motivating them to give their best efforts. Insufficient monetary reward cannot be
compensated by good human relation. Self motivation can go only so far and it needs to be

constantly reinforce by rewards. In particular, merit must be measured and rewarded regularly, if it
is to be encouraged and sustained. Money can be motivating factor but little money may have no
effect (Christal, 1970). To achieve motivation of employees, therefore reward should be
meaningful and it should vary with performance.
Iloilo City is known as the economic center of WesternVisayas in the Philippines, Iloilo City
features some of the most impressive, progressive and outstanding restaurants in the country. In an
extremely fine place like this, food service providers are very important because they contribute a
lot to the booming of food service industry of the area. However, one of the difficulties of food
service in Iloilo City is how to implement effective motivation (reward system) to their
employees. This is one of the reasons why some employees lost interest in work or sometimes quit
their jobs. Therefore the researchers decide to choose Maxs Restaurant SM City Branch
to collect data and to conduct a study about their reward system and its effectiveness.

Background and Theoretical Framework of the Study

Job Motivation is the set of internal and external forces that cause an employee to choose a course
of action and engage in certain behaviors. Ideally, these behaviors will be directed at the
achievement of an organizational goal.
According to Taylor & Atkinson (2009), Motivation is the desire to achieve beyond expectations,
being driven by internal rather than external factors, and to be involved in a continuous striving
for improvement.
By definition, motivation refers to the individual forces that account for the direction, level, and
persistence of a persons effort expended at work. It is not enough simply to reward people for
their performance, it is also essential that the reward be of value to them. People tend to value
most the things which they need most. Understanding how to provide rewards that people value,
then, can begin with an understanding of human needs.
