Fulton j sheen CONSCIENCE

Peace be to you....a man with a theatre came to see me a few years ago and his reason was this he
said that one night after a show he was talking to a number of the apricot people in back stage and
they said to him, you are a catholic arent you? he saidi used to be but i have done consciderable
reading and comparative religion, psychology, psyciatry medi physics and i have to give it up nobody
could answer to my question someone said why dont you go to bishop sheen have him answer
your question? and he said here i am and i have a number of question i would like to put to you and i
said to how before you ask a single question, you go back to the hotel where u where living get me
that coroscoe you living with and then come back and ask the question, he through up his hand left
and said oh certainly. Am trying to fool you just like I fooled myself, thats the reason. I saw him not
very long ago and i said well you are still off the track arent you he said yes but i have not thrown
away the map. Now here was a perfect example of someone covering up conscience and it is of the
conscience that we would speak but conscience carries on with us a kind of unbearable repartee. We
are very different from the rest of creatures regard us- insist on similarities, what makes us
difference is that we can reflect from back upon ourselves .No storm can ever turn its part of itself
on another part of itself no page of a book can so completely be absorbed of another page of a book
that it understands that page but we humans we have the power of looking at ourselves and a kind
of a mirror, we can be pleased with ourselves, we can be angry with ourselves and it is possible for
us to have tensions of all kind which do not happen to animal you will never in your life see a rooster
with an oedipus complex you will never- never see a pig with an oedipus complex no animal never
has a complex
Never feels this tension we do we say the tension between but we are in what we are to be between
the ideal and the fact we are somewhat like a mountain climber we see the peak way up the top in
which we are climbing and which we opt to attain and down below we see the base end it which
with anytime me might fall now why is it that conscience does trouble us predicate away when it
does not trouble the rest of creatures why is that we are trying to escape it make a harm of
abnormal ways there are of avoiding it sleeping tablets, alcoholism they are just of few of the ways
of avoiding this unbearable repartee. Then how you ever noticed how pessimistic some people
become they are we are expecting reign on
the day of the picnic. Everything is congeture not to be apostrophe they know it. Why do they take
this attitude because on their own heart and soul they know very well that the way they are living
and why they are leaving conscience is there a unfavourable judgment and so they bring back that
judgment upon themselves and always there is a way in electric chair, the judgementary influence
by this pessimistic attitude.
Another psychological manifestation of violence of conscience is
hypocriticism. The neighbour is always wrong and have you ever noticed the letters that has send to
the newspaper they begin with. The trouble with my husband is this i cannot stand my wife because
my son is stubborn and then the ordinary affairs of life. The poor neighbour never can do anything
good. Why this hypocritical attitude , Abraham Lincoln once gave the right answer to it, if you going
to a hospital in Alexandria during the civil war and at a time when president was not well known
because maybe have circulated all of his photographs and as he went into the hospital some young
man running out palmed into Lincoln send him sprawling on the floor and shouted at Lincoln get out
off the way you big long lean lanky stiff and Lincoln looked up at him and said young man whats
troubling you on the inside, and so with hypocriticism we are so conscious of our real sence of
justice that we do not right ourselves , we have to be righting everybody else for example you can at
go into your room where there are a series of pictures and one of them is two inches a high without
straightning out that picture, you want everything in order, you want everything in order except
ourselves then you are more serious escapes from this unbearable repartee and in order to let you
know the human nature is always acted in the same way. Let us go back to Shakespeare , in his great
tragedy Macbeth Shakespeare long before we had any of the profound findings of psychiatry
describe a profic case of psychosis and profic case of neurosis. It was Macbeth that have the
psychosis , Lady Macbeth his wife at the neurosis. You remember the story in order to attain the
throne Duncan called the king was murdered. Conscience bothered Macbeth so much that it
developed into to psychosis and he began to see the ghost of Bangkok. Imagine he saw him sitting at
the table the digure that killed the king was constantly before him with his diagure before my eyes it
was just imagination but the projection ours in a duke and then note the great wisdom of
Shakespeare in pointing out that whenever there is a revolution against conscience they will very
often comes scepticisms. Now easiest complication of philosophy in life and Macbeth reached this
stage were to him life is just a candle. Out- out grief candle i had no mean and so the pity pace
creeps on from day to day and all are yesterdays have lighted fools a way to dusty death. i tell you
scepticism agnosticism and ethiens have not rational foundations. The foundations are in the moral
order first there was a reboot against conscience. then look at lady Macbeth her give manifested
itself neurosis and made said of lady Macbeth that she washed to hand every quarter of an hour .
there was a sense of guilt in her which she had completing updated and instead of washing her
soul. As she know she shouldve done she projected it to her hand and on hands was always
smeared with blood it seemed. She said it not all the waters of seven seas were enough to wash this
blood in Canadian on her hand guilt will out and one can see it when ones soul knows well very
easily. I was ones instructing a young women and she had finished on tape on record not these not
these whatever i had made before, she had finished before fifteen hours and after the first
instruction on confession she said to my secretary i am finished no more lessons i donot want to
hear anything about /my secretary phoned me and i said ask her to finish the other three on the
subject of confession and then i will see her and i saw her at the end of the three and she was in a
veritable crisis she was screaming pleading let me out of here, let me out of here,i never want to
hear anything again about the church after hearing that stock on confessionwell it took about 5
minutes to calm her and i said 'listen me my good girl, there is absolutely no proportion between
what you have heard and the way you were acting though it has to be something else.Do you know
what i think is wrong?i think you had an abortion she said'yes....'though happy it was out.Now see
how that bad conscience came out an attack upon confession the crucifies. That was not the
problem, very often we will find that an attack upon religion that it fights for moment,is an easy
conscience.now what is this conscience means, what significance has it for, well conscience is
something like united states government .United states government is divided into 3 offices The
legislative, the executive and the judiciary. The legislative congress to make law,the executive the
president witnesses to the confirmaty of law and action and finally the Supreme court which judges
that confirmaty. Now we have all of these inside of us, first of all we have a congress .there is a law
inside saying 'though shalt though shall not'.Am i inrupt myself from home to find conscience very
simply as conscience is that which makes you feel good after and wrong is that which makes you feel
bad after.Have we have a law?though shalt though shall not, where does this law come from, from
myself?no its a dip i can do away with it if i have made it i could unmake it does it come from
society?it does not because sometimes conscience praisesly when society condemns me and
sometime conscience will condemn me when society praises me.Where is it come from then? its not
from myself ,where then the executive side of conscience come from? Atrue judges whether on
earth i have to obey that law exept i was there,i saw you.And all others will say oh pain oh attention
to it.one knows very well that one must and one also knows the motives that inspired the act and
finally it judges us and if therefore it praises us or certain actions and we feel some of the same
happiness and joy that we would from inprise of father or mother if we feels the same sadness and
on happiness that we feel / a father or mother it must be the behind conscience/ the devine the
whole it is the standard of our life. most of the /problem from which people suffer to day is give to a
// aganist this law which is the / in their on heart in how often just/people retain again to conscience
please comes back happiness life is very very different and that is what we are after/soul there fore
the unberable/is only one side of conscience it is the conscience that tell the when we do long so
that we feel on inside/broken up///because the boun is not where it /to be/troubles us because the
conscience is not where it/to be
