1 INTRODUCCIN

El concepto de Energy Harvesting consiste en el aprovechamiento de la energa
disponible en fuentes como la solar, trmica y elica a travs de dispositivos de potencias
pequeas, algunos sistemas aprovechan el movimiento mecnico (humano o artificial)
reutilizando esta energa para generar sustentabilidad en el mismo sistema.
Los sistemas de transporte de personas y carga en tneles crean grandes movimientos de
aire constituyndose en energa que no es aprovechada, la motivacin de este proyecto es
ilustrar esta energa mediante la instalacin de un sistema vibratorio del tipo Galloping el
cual consta de un panel armado con un arreglo de materiales piezoelctrico, el cual por sus
caractersticas mecnicas crea una diferencia de potencial electroesttico cuando son
sometidos a efectos de compresin-traccin, luego la energa elctrica puede ser aprovechada
en el mismo sistema del tnel creando as un sistema autosustentable.
Se desea con tal propsito disear y construir un sistema con el que se obtengan
visualmente este suceso, para presenciar la conversin de energa en tiempo real.
Los resultados esperados son generar electricidad para encender un arreglo de luces
ubicado en el panel y un sector posterior al arreglo.




2 OBJETIVOS

El desarrollo del proyecto propuesto busca:
Construir un prototipo que demuestre visualmente y en tiempo real la conversin de
energa elica a mecnica (vibracin), la que es transformada a energa elctrica mediante
materiales piezoelctricos.
Demostrar de forma didctica a pblico general el efecto piezoelctrico y su potencial en
generacin de energa elctrica.
Difundir mtodos no tradicionales de aprovechamiento de la energa elica.
Por otra parte, el objetivo principal de este documento es mostrar de la forma ms
esquemtica posible el experimento propuesto. Los objetivos especficos del presente
documento son:
Presentar las bases tericas y los modelos fsicos.
Mostrar el prototipo.
Listar los precios obtenidos a partir de cotizaciones.
Definir el equipo de trabajo.
Programar las actividades en el caso de adjudicarse el proyecto.





3 GENERADOR DE ENERGA PIEZOELECTRICO

En la generacin de energa piezoelctrica, la energa mecnica de las vibraciones se
transforma en energa elctrica mediante un material piezoelctrico. Cuando un material
piezoelctrico se deforma, las molculas centrales del cristal se polarizan y forman un dipolo.
Si los dipolos se ordenan, entonces se logra que dos superficies del material estn cargadas
positiva y negativamente. Esta propiedad de los materiales piezoelctricos se puede
aprovechar para transformar deformacin mecnica en energa elctrica. Las ecuaciones
constitutivas de un material piezoelctrico son las siguientes:

Donde D, E, S y T son el desplazamiento elctrico, campo elctrico, deformacin y
esfuerzo respectivamente. La constante es la permisividad del material piezoelctrico y una
constante piezoelctrica que relaciona carga con deformacin. Los superndices E y S indican
un parmetro a campo elctrico y deformacin constante, respectivamente, mientras que el
superndice T indica la transpuesta de la matriz.
Las Figuras 3.1 presenta un esquema de un generador piezoelctrico construido con
una viga de dos capas conocido como bimorph, este es uno de los ms populares. Una
lmina de metal se encuentra entre dos lminas piezoelctricas y una masa se coloca al final
para aumentar la deformacin. El voltaje generado por el elemento piezoelctrico se puede
utilizar para energizar un sistema directamente o para cargar una batera o condensador. La
Figura 3.2 muestra un circuito elctrico tpico de un generador de energa piezoelctrico, en
donde la seal alterna generada por el elemento piezoelctrico es rectificada y luego
almacenada en un condensador.

4 VIBRACIONES INDUCIDAS POR FLUIDOS

El fenmeno de vibraciones inducidas por el viento es usualmente evitado en el diseo de
sistemas mecnicos, ya que se considera daino y destructivo. Sin embargo, las vibraciones
inducidas por fluidos pueden ser muy tiles si son convertidas en energa elctrica. En
generacin de energa se han estudiado distintos fenmenos, los que se muestran en la Figura
4.1: Desprendimiento de vrtices, galloping, piezoaeroelastic y wake galloping. La mayora de
estos fenmenos son vibraciones auto-inducidas que se inician a una cierta velocidad del
viento.

5 DESCRIPCIN DEL PROTOTIPO

Como se ilustra en la Figura 5.1, el prototipo cuenta con: (1) un ventilador genera un flujo de
aire. (2) El flujo de aire hace vibrar un conjunto de vigas piezoelctricas montadas sobre un
marco. Las vigas, al vibrar generan diferencias de potencial que son utilizadas para cargar un
conjunto de condensadores. (3) Por ltimo, la energa de los condensadores se utiliza para
encender un conjunto de luces LED. El prototipo permite demostrar en tiempo real la
generacin de energa a partir de vibraciones inducidas por el viento. El marco adems est
conectado a resortes, los que permiten hacerlo vibrar sin necesidad de viento (por ejemplo
con un desplazamiento inicial). Con esto ltimo, se puede demostrar la generacin de energa
a partir de movimiento mecnico.









5.1 Seccin Estructural

La zona estructural se divide en tres partes
Marco: contiene un marco primario y secundario. El primero sostiene los receptores
de viento que llevan el material piezoelctrico posibilitando la conversin, el segundo
se une al primero mediante la seccin de resortes y se utiliza para sostener toda la
estructura a una mesa o soporte de presentacin mediante prensas (ver Figuras 5.1.1
y 5.1.3).

Resortes: Tiene la funcin de unir los marcos primario y secundario, adems de
posibilitar la funcionalidad del sistema sin necesidad del viento y solo mediante una
estimulacin inicial de forzamiento.

Receptor: Una placa de material piezoelctrico adherida a un material secundario que
sirve para posibilitar la unin entre el marco primario y un cabezal de material ligero
de seccin transversal cuadrada que maximiza las vibraciones recibidas en el material
piezoelctrico.

Vale decir que este prototipo est sujeto a cambios que, en caso de existir, seran menores.



5.2 Seccin Elctrica

La zona elctrica se divide en tres partes
Puente de diodos: Recuperar el flujo de potencial alterno rectificndolo para obtener
una seal continua. Ubicado mediante una conexin directa por cables a la base del
material piezoelctrico.
Condensador: Almacenamiento de energa elctrica, conectado a continuacin del
puente de diodos con una capacidad nominal de .
Banco de Luces LED: La energa elctrica es utilizada para encender luces de baja
potencia de modo de ilustrar visualmente la conversin de energa.
Este sistema se replica en cada posicin de receptor del marco primario, el cual alimenta
un banco central de luces LEDs
El circuito individual est ilustrado en la figura 5.2.1.

7 PLANIFICACIN

Dados los requerimientos del proyecto se consideran 6 semanas de trabajo, comenzando
la semana del 28 de Julio y terminando la semana del 01 de Septiembre.
Las actividades quedan resumidas en la siguiente Carta Gantt sujeta a modificaciones
segn la fecha de entrega de los resultados de participacin.

Explorations:
I started by looking at the self-powered shoe from Responsive Environments group and wanted
to acquire a large piece of piezo film that could be embedded in the sole of a shoe. After
consulting with Mark Feldmeier, I learned that the piezo elements large enough to generate
enough power for the shoe would be too expensive to use if I wanted to make more than just a
single prototype.
Mark recommended that I look into the piezo push-button switch that he made (link to paper).
The switch excites a piezo element at its resonate frequency and is thus able to generate
much more power with a compact form. Heres a picture of the power-harvesting circuit from
the paper:

The piezo element generates a waveform with very high voltage. The waveform goes through
the transformer, which lowers its voltage, and then a diode-bridge full-wave rectifier, which
converts the negative portions of the signal to positive. The energy from the piezo is then
stored in the capacitor. The capacitor is connected to a linear regulator, which outputs a
constant 3v to some load circuit whenever the capacitor has enough charge.
Prototyping:
I got a switch, transformer, diode bridge and capacitor from Mark along with the original board,
which is fairly small and would definitely fit under high heels. I soldered the parts on and
checked the output of the capacitor on a scope to see that it gets to about 20v with each
button press.
To test the power of the circuit in practice, I hooked up 10 red LEDs (2v voltage drop, 16mA)
in series coming out from the capacitor. When I press the button, they all light up fairly
brightly for a fraction of a section.
(Incidentally, I wired the LEDs in parallel initially by mistake, and the circuit still worked. I feel
like this isnt so kosher as each LED is getting 20v with each click, but Mark says that since
the transformer has very high impedance, its not actually as horrible as I think.)

I also did some math to figure out what other types of applications this circuit could power.
The small switch (that I used) generates 0.5mJ per push.
Given 3 pushes/sec, this gives 1.5mW (1.5 mJ/s) of power.
With 30 minutes of continuous walking, this generates 30 minutes * 60 sec/minute * 1.5
mJ/sec = 2700 mJ

Mide's QuickPack piezoelectric actuators and sensors bring the
benefits of piezos, coupled with Mide's Piezo Protection Advantage,
to a number of new transducer applications and options - including
flexible and interdigitised actuators and sensors.
Through a proprietary manufacturing process known as the "Piezo
Protection Advantage", high performance piezos are packaged in a
protective skin with pre-attached electrical leads, producing a
highly reliable component with no soldered wires. The QuickPack
actuator's protective skin also provides electrical insulation and
defense against humidity and harsh contaminants. It makes
piezoelectrics easier to use and easier to integrate into your
products and systems.
