Read the following text and complete the given task. Coal, like oil and gas, is a fossil fuel. While oil and gas formed from the remains of living organisms, coal formed from the remains of decaying plants from prehistoric forests. These remains were compressed and changed by layers of rock above them. There are three main types of coals, each containing a different amount of carbon: anthracite, bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most valuable form of coal as it contains approximately ! per cent carbon. "ituminous coal contains around #$ per cent carbon, while lignite, or brown coal, contains less than !$ per cent carbon. %ost coal is found in underground bands or seams. The coal&mining industry extracts more than ' ( ! million tonnes of coal every year. %ore than half of this total is mined in China and the )nited *tates. The amount of coal that could be mined from known reserves is some + ,$$ billion tonnes. -ifferent types of mines and mining techni.ues are used depending on land conditions and how deep the coal seam is. -eep deposits are reached through vertical shafts and hori/ontal tunnels are dug into the coal seam. Coal deposits near the surface are mined in drift, open&cast and slope mines, which cost less to construct and operate than shaft mines. Coal was the main fuel for the 0ndustrial 1evolution at the end of the +2 th century. 0t powered steam engines and was used for making iron and steel. Today, most coal is burned in power stations to generate electricity. Coal&fired power stations use filters and other devices to trap soot and other pollutants formed when coal burns. When coal is heated in chamber called a retort, it releases gas, oil and tar. The gas can be burned as fuel. The oil and tar contain chemicals that can be used for making products such as dyes, perfumes and artificial fibres. The solid that is left behind in the retort is coke. 0t is used as a smokeless fuel and for making iron. There are about 9$$ muscles under the skin and inside the body. About two thirds of these are :voluntary muscles;. These muscles are connected to our bones and enable us to move them on command. An example is the muscle which controls neck movement. Certain muscles cannot ordinarily be controlled. <xamples of such muscles are those that move food through the intestines and those that make the heart beat. These are called :involuntarily muscles;. %uscles are only able to pull, but not push. They work in opposite pairs. This can be seen from the =ointed leg bones. %uscles in the front part of the thigh and hip contract and pull the leg forward, when you swing a leg forward. Conversely, when you swing the leg backward, muscles in the back of the thigh and hip contract and pull the leg back. Tendons connect muscles to the bone and cartilage. These are tough, twisted fibres of varying lengths. They can sometimes be cord&like, or they can be wide and flat. They have a whitish colour, and are strong and unstretchable. *leeves of thin tissue enclose these tendons. A slippery, lubricating li.uid fills these enclosures and enables the tendons to slide without rubbing. >ne of the toughest and largest tendons in the body is the Achilles tendon. 0t is situated =ust above the heel of the foot. "efore mechanical refrigeration systems were introduced, people cooled their food with ice and snow, either found locally or brought down from the mountains. The first cellars were holes dug into the ground and lined with wood or straw and packed with snow and ice: this was the only means of refrigeration for most of history. 1efrigeration is the process of removing heat from an enclosed space, or from a substance, to lower its temperature. A refrigerator uses the evaporation of a li.uid to absord heat. The li.uid, or refrigerant, used in a refrigerator evaporates at an extremely low temperature, creating free/ing temperatures inside the refrigerator. !.
