Preparation notes week-5
Stop the innovation wars:
Innovation wars signifies the constant battle between different kinds of corporate operation
groups who are in a way solely responsible for the existing operations and maintain the
products and services apart from the respective teams which are formed to achieve current
initiatives, given names such as innovation team. The writers of this article describes the
extremely negative as well as powerful reactions to the idea of building a team pertaining to
innovation which will have special responsibility for a brand new strategy and the way it will
give rise to research will be captivating.
The writers try to give a new name and identity to the operations groups as the performance
engine of the organization and therefore prescribe a partnership arrangement, in which the
project teams will have tie up with the performance engine partners who will be doing the
innovation projects.
The article also puts light on few interesting pieces of case studies such as these:
1. BMWs braking system which is regenerative in nature
2. Creation of database pertaining to West which is the legal publishing branch of Thomas
Reuters
3. Service businesses involving Lucent
4. New dispenser of WD-40s to help in demonstrating the universal appeal of their
method which is proposed or applied in a particular product, a component work or
service.
The main task of the partnership process starts from dividing the work between the
performance engine and the dedicated project team.
The past working relationships of the people should be assessed before work that needs to be
done and the skills that are required to be assessed. This type of system may not work for
people who work in a flat organization but for people who work in hierarchical form of
organization.
The writers have tried to comply the task management in order to create these elements, but
on the other hand there are many times wherein the management fails more often than it
succeeds as creating a specific culture - it seems that the best that management can do is be
sure that the metrics and reward systems are not contrary to the desired cultural elements.

The Stage gate idea to launch process-Update, hats new and Nexgen systems:
Robert Cooper developed the concept of Stage-Gate as an important innovation management
method for organisation. It is now utilized widely as a mechanism which entails around
managing the product development process .For example in case of a university this matter
may involve the development and production of a particular course or subject area.

The primary objective of the model is to develop a system that would support in coming up
with key decisions at each and every stage .The main question though would remain to be
should we carry on with the development or as Cooper conveys to either Go with it or Kill it.
For the writer of this article the time duration between the gates consists of important
information gathering activities which are then followed by an in depth analysis pertaining to
the final result which is undertaken into the gate for decision.

In the past five years few of the work has begun with assessing and revising the stage gate
model.
