Vision

strong pull for Gen-Next Entrepreneurs and trigger growth of New Ventures worldwide

Mission

To work with interested TiE Chapters to evangelize this framework with necessary customization to suit
local needs and expand outreach program for new generation entrepreneurs to get plugged into the TiE
ecosystem as a concerted move to drive Innovative Business Ventures and Ideas.

Certo Labs Inc. winner of TiEQuest 2006 is commercializing a high through-put automated extraction
instrument for analytical laboratories. Since then, Certo Labs raised over $500,000 of funding. The company
also won numerous awards, including the Martin Walmsley Fellowship for Technological Entrepreneurship
from the Ontario Centres of Excellence, Young Investigators Award from International Society for the Study
of Fatty Acids and Lipids Scientific Conference, The Great Canadian Invention Competition from Canadian
Business Magazine, McMaster Nicol Entrepreneur Challenge, IBK Capital-Ivey Business Plan Competition,
Rice University MBA Business Plan Competition and Venture Capital Investment Competition (see
www.certolabs.com)

Prize Categories
1. Expression of Interest for up to $1,000,000 investment
Sponsoring venture capital and private equity funds will offer an Expression of Interest to the top teams
in their respective area of operations. Each Expression of Interest will be for investment of up to 1,000,000.
Actual investment will be subject to due diligence by sponsoring funds. Representatives of these
sponsoring firms will be included on judging panels.

2. Winner of TiEQuest 2009 received Ontario Entrepreneurship Trophy from Ministry of Small Business
and Consumer Services.

3. Cash Prize to the Winner and the First Runners-Up
The Winner and First Runners-Up receive cash, which will be useful to further crystallize the business,
conduct proof of concept and to take it to a level where they can obtain funding. Total cash prizes in 2007
and 2008 were $50,000 to the Winner and $25,000 to the First Runners Up. A part of the cash prize may be
structured as an interest free perpetual loan from our sponsors to the winning entities. The loan would be
repayable or convertible into equity at Investors option only upon the business receiving at least $500,000
additional cumulative investment. The repayment, if any, would be at 10% premium of the loan value and
conversion price, if any, and would be equivalent to the price offered to next funding. No other rights will
be attached to this loan. Cash prize also included $20,000 of Dobson Prize for Entrepreneurship.

4. In-kind Services from various sponsors
The winners receive a number of in-kind services. Total value of cash prizes and in-kind services amounts to
$150,000. The in-kind services provided are been chosen in such a way that they are most useful in
establishing a business. Past contestants of TiEQuest have indicated that these services were most valuable
to them. The following in-kind services are being offered:
$25,000 worth of services from MaRS, including (a) Advisory Services, (2) Market Intelligence through partnerships with premium providers
and (3) Conference facilities in MaRS Collaboration Centre for 10 business days in six-month period.
$20,000 worth of business advisory services from Nytric Inc.
$20,000 worth of legal services from Cameron MacKendrick LLP (offered to 3 teams)
$15,000 of Business and Financial Advisory from NBP
$10,000 of commercialization services from HTX
$5,000 worth of patent advisory services from NW Patent Funding Corporation.
$5000 of corporate legal services from Minden Gross LLP
$3,000 of corporate finance services from Canaccord Capital and many others

Judges will decide which teams receive different services.

5. A New Entrepreneur Prize of $5,000 offered to a best Student Team.
All team members should be full-time students of an accredited educational institution.

Substantial prize money given out in TiEQuest is backed by contributions and support of sponsors, who are
supporters of entrepreneurship. For instance, TiEQuest 2010 at Toronto provided following prizes:

$50,000 in cash allocated as follows:
$20,000 as "Dobson Prize in Entrepreneurship" by Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto
$30,000 as the TiEQuest Award
$31,000 of in-kind services from various sponsors allocated as follows:
$10,000 worth of services from MaRS. The services will include (a) Advisory Services, (b) Market Intelligence through partnerships
with premium providers and (c) Conference facilities in MaRS Collaboration Centre for 10 business days within six-month period

4. McMaster New Entrepreneur Prize awarded to a best Student Team. To qualify for this prize all members of the team
should be full-time students of an accredited educational institution in North America. The Award comprises:
$5,000 in cash
$12,000 scholarship from McMaster University for their MEEI program at the Xerox Centre for Engineering, Entrepreneurship and
innovation.

For TiEQuest 2010 this award was given to Shape Collage
5. OCE Best Intellectual Property Award.
$5,000 cash to the most promising patent or patent application
$1,000 worth of consultation relating to the SR&ED tax incentive program from OME Group

Profound Medical Inc. was awarded this prize in TiEQuest 2010
6. Gowlings Best Clean Tech Venture Prize
$5,000 cash to the best venture in Clean Tech Industry
$1,000 worth of consultation relating to the SR&ED tax incentive program from OME Group.

7. HTX Best Healthcare Industry Award
$5,000 cash to the best venture in the Medical Assisted Technology Industry

Background, Work Plan, Methodology & Evolution
To begin with, TiEQuest is taken as model BVC (Business Venture Competition) or Benchmark that
attempts to integrate mentoring and investment flows over an intense 6-month long program, now running
into the sixth year since it commenced at Toronto in 2005.

This BVC Handbook to serve as global template to revitalize and supercharge future TiEQuest curriculum at
Toronto as well as all interested TiE Chapters participating at the local level. TiE Toronto will support the
endeavor of other participating Chapters and collaborate with them anticipating to learn new practices
emerging. Ultimate objective is to serve the best interest of entire TiE Ecosystem and empower aspiring
next generation entrepreneurs worldwide. Following local BVC, participating Chapters may consider
sending winning teams to Toronto for bigger competition or additional exposure.

Now, such a move entails well structured guideline, work plan, methodology that benefits the entire TiE
network. This Handbook develops further on the existing TiEQuest collaterals to delineate a generic work
plan that becomes a ready launch pad. The Handbook will continue to evolve, capturing best practices
from other major competitions across TiE World (TiE50, Kaun Banega Entrepreneur, ISB-Connect, etc.).

This Handbook has been reviewed by TiEQuest organizers and finally vetted by the Expert Resource Team
comprising dedicated members from Stanford and UC Berkeley Universities (see section on
Recommendations for Improvement & Future Positioning). Finally, the Handbook will be placed in the
Resource Center section of www.tie.org and is subjected to continuous improvement drawing on user
feedback. The existing www.tiequest.org will be yet another repository of online resources along with this
Handbook to power global business venture competition across TiE network.

As work plan and methodology evolves beginning from Phase I (2010-11), the following will be attempted:

Making available third party software (Kauffman Foundation ISmart, etc.) catalyzing process driven BVC
to interested Chapters.

Integrating BVC with the global network of mentors in TiE ecosystem facilitated by the Remote
Mentoring platform would be yet another initiative.

Winners of TiEQuest and similar BV contests across TiE network shall be encouraged to post their
Business Plan Summary for connecting with Investors and Mentors worldwide.

Develop virtual community of mentors, investors, judges to work with BVC winners and stakeholders.
Engage leading Chapters like Toronto, Silicon Valley, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Boston, Delhi, Mumbai,
London and others interested to actively participate in this online community.

Include learnings from TiEQuest and other similar programs captured in the Handbook as a separate
Chapter in Entrepreneurship Best Practices Guide to be brought out towards end of 2010.

Engage multiple Chapters, TiE Global communication packages, Annual Report, website, high profile
partners and sponsors to champion BVC curriculum worldwide. BSchools, Academia, Investment firms,
VCs, angel community, leading entrepreneurs, mentors and domain experts to evangelize BVC outreach.
Hold Global Competition amongst all Business Plan winners within TiE ecosystem to attract investors
and mentors with global standing. Explore synching with Global TYE model.

Make this an ongoing affair with need-based work plan update to ensure constant improvements with
the support and involvement of TiEs proliferating network.

The Mentors

What makes TiEQuest different from any other competition is the mentoring expertise offered to the
participating entrepreneurs. All contestants who qualify after Project Profile stage are offered mentoring.
Panel of mentors comprise successful entrepreneurs, senior professionals in law, accounting and other
business leaders offering a host of new venture services. Many of these mentors are TiE Charter Members,
who are committed to devote time to guide entrepreneurs. The mentors also offer criticism to the projects
with the aim to accelerate growth in a balanced manner and mitigate risk factors. Many of the mentors are
very often ready to open their rolodex to help entrepreneurs where they need it. See list of Mentors along
with Judges in the later part of this section to get a flavor of expertise and strength brought in by the
mentoring pool at Toronto (a process that can be replicated by other TiE Chapters).

Mentoring Workshop
All successful contestants will be invited to a mentoring workshop at a downtown Toronto venue (this is a
crucial attribute of TiEQuest BVC and all participating Chapters need to dedicate Mentors and additional
resources for such workshops and Mentoring support. Purpose of this workshop is to guide the contestants
to improve on their venture. Many judges participate in the workshop, which includes:
Presentations by past winners
Discussions regarding the progress of your venture with mentors
Obtain guidance for any questions you may have
Opportunity to speak with Judges

"We have really come to appreciate what TiEQuest has to offer. The greatest bonus to us was meeting a lot of judges, who
were experts in various industries, very well connected professionals and just meeting the calibre of judges and mentors and
even some of the participants was a great boost for us. There are two main ways the judges and mentors and the whole
mentoring process helped us: One is that they gave us a deadline to produce content, which is a great way to focus. Having set
deadlines by which the business plan needed to be ready helped us. Second was the judges gave us fresh perspective. Being
a tech company we were caught up on the technology side. Mathews background is in computers and my background is in

Competition Stages
All materials submitted by contestants is subject to the Confidentiality Statement. The contestants make a
number of submissions as per the following schedule (these are suggested timelines but good reference
points for individual Chapters to adopt):

1. Launch Event and Info Sessions
The Launch Event is an introduction to TiEQuest (for TiEQuest 2010 finals held in April, the launch event
was held on Nov 21, 2009). Following the launch event, a number of information sessions are organized at
university campuses, boards of trade and innovation centres, sponsors and promoters, etc. (aim is to
connect with entrepreneurial ecosystems and leading stakeholders). Some of the information sessions are
available over conference call and online connectivity/resources (www.tiequest.org).

Entry Criterion

TiEQuest contestants must meet the following qualifications:
The competition is open to all types of entities (corporation, partnership, proprietorship, etc.)
established by between 1 and 5 entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs.
Contesting entrepreneurs are not TiE directors/officers or related to competition organizers or judges.
Contesting entrepreneurs may not be members of more than one entity entering the competition; each
entity may only make one submission
Submission must be the entrepreneurs original idea - proof of origination should be available
The business idea may be new or already implemented.
Total third-party funding raised in the business as of date of entry should not exceed $2,000,000.
The contestants must have developed the business venture themselves and be serious about seeing the
business venture through to reality (hence, entry fee is levied)
It is strongly recommended that each team select one or more Mentors to guide them in developing a
quality business venture. We expect mentors to hold at least three feedback sessions with each
contesting entity. The following will qualify as an mentor:
A faculty member at University/Institute/Center of Learning
A professional in the industry where business venture is focused
A practitioner/manager of an entrepreneurial assistance program

Upon request from participants, TiE Chapter to provide service of one of its Charter Members, who have
agreed to volunteer their time for this. Any request for this must be submitted to Global Management
Team. A biography of these members to be made available at online center www.tiequest.org or a site
prepared for the purpose.

2. Intention to Participate (Applications are usually accepted till end of January)
Intention to participate in TiEQuest is submitted online from www.tiequest.org (this can be integrated with
the participating TiE Chapter site). All submissions should be accompanied by the entry fee of $100 per
team by credit card or check in favor of the Chapter. The entry fee entitles the contestant (only one) to one
year membership. Existing TiE members dont pay the fee. The contestants are added to the TiE Chapter
mailing lists and receive all Chapter events and mentoring information. The Chapter reserves the right to
limit competition to first 200-300 applicants. It is advisable to complete all formalities as early as possible.
The contestants receive User ID and passwords to access contestants portion of the website. All
submissions and communications are done through electronic means as much as possible.

Any contestant with specific concern relating to confidentiality of their venture will be provided an
opportunity to discuss the matter with a legal advisor. Contestants should request this to the concerned
Chapter Coordinator of TiEQuest, after submission of the Entry Form and payment of entry fee. After
discussion with a legal counsel, contestants may withdraw their entry within two business days without
penalty and full refund of their entry fee (if they do not wish to be members). Contestants submit the
names of all their participating entrepreneurs and also that of their advisor. All team members and advisors
to sign Entry Form. Usually, all contestants can expect email confirmation of Entry acceptance by early Feb.

3. Project Profile
Contestants will submit a project profile outlining their business venture as per the format posted on
www.tiequest.org (see Annexure for sample). The project profile to be submitted electronically and should
very briefly cover:
Company profile: URL, Industry, employees, year founded
Contact information
Background of entrepreneurs, management team and advisors
Brief Financial information: revenue run rate, previous capital, monthly burn, pre-money valuation, and
capital sought
Business Summary
Customer problem addressed
Product/service offered
Target market size and characteristics
Customers and selling strategy
Business model
Competitors and Competitive advantage
Top and bottom line projections.
All successful contestants receive email confirmation for proceeding to next stage by around mid February.

4. Mentoring Workshop (between mid & third week of Feb)
All successful contestants will be invited to a mentoring workshop and the purpose of this workshop is to
guide the contestants to improve on their venture. Many judges of the competition will be participating in
the workshop.

5. Elevator Pitch
Contestants will prepare an Elevator Pitch relating to their business venture. They will have an option to
present the Elevator Pitch in person or electronically. In case of an electronic submission, the contestants
will upload relevant video file.
Maximum time for the Elevator Pitch will be 240 seconds (4 minutes)
Contestants may use product samples, pictures or other visual or video aids for the support
The pitch should be directed to convince investors to read the detailed business plan. It should address
the value proposition of the business.
All successful contestants receive email confirmation for proceeding to next stage by early-mid March.

6. Written Business Plan
The contestants will upload .doc or .pdf formats of the written business plan on the TiEQuest Website or a
separately dedicated section in the Chapter site. The plans may be 30-50 pages long and should cover:
Cover Page detailing: Name of the venture and name of participating entrepreneurs and advisor
Executive Summary
Visual aids: Pictures, charts, graphs. Do not include any physical samples.
Value Proposition
Industry background: What is the industry like? How old? How fast is it growing?
Business model: What is the business? How does it work? How does it make money?
Customer characteristics: Who are they? What are they like? Why would they choose you? Why would
you choose them?
Supplier characteristics: Who are they? What are they like? Why would they choose you? Why would
you choose them?
Competitor characteristics: Who are they? What are they like? At what level are they funded? What
advantage do you offer?
Threats: What are the biggest threats to your business venture? New competitors? New technologies?
Price wars? How does your venture address them?
Funding: How much do you need? What would you do with the money? When would you need more?
First year profit-and-loss projections by month, Five year profit-and-loss projections by year, breakeven
analysis, payback, IRR, NPV
Profit Potential: When will the shareholders make a return on their investment? How much?
Risk Factors in the proposed venture
Profiles of key management members, specific roles, how strengths of team members match these
roles, positions yet to be filled
All contestants will receive comments from the judges on their business plan on March (usually third week)
and are expected to address these in presentation to the judges.

7. Presentations Semi-Final
Contestants will make a 20-25 minutes private presentation to a panel of three or more judges. The judges
will have already read the written business plan submitted. The focus of the presentation will be to pitch
their idea to convince judges to invest in their venture. The presentation will be followed by 15-20 minutes
of a question and answer session. The objective of this round will be to reduce the pool of contestants to a
smaller number. All contestants will receive a confirmation (by email) if they are successful in proceeding to
the next stage of the competition by end March.

8. Presentations - Final
The finalists will make another 20-25 minutes private presentation to a panel of judges. The sponsoring
funds offering expression of interest will be included in this panel. It is expected that this presentation will
answer issues raised in Round 1 presentation and be followed by 15-20 minutes Q&A. The Winners will be
announced during the TiEQuest Awards Dinner usually scheduled during April 2010.

Judging Criteria
As indicated above, the primary judging criterion used in evaluating business venture is the real world
question: Would I invest in this company? In addition, due weight is given to the following factors (this is
indicative guideline and subject to modifications by Chapters though basic parameters not to vary much):

Product/Service: Does the venture have sound value proposition? Have the contestants developed the product concept clearly?
Does the business concept embody innovation and creativity?
Marketability: Is the product/service marketable? Is there a demand? Is there sustainable competitive advantage?
Viability: What is the likelihood of the business plan actually becoming the basis for a viable business? Does the venture
technically make sense? Could it be a real business? Will the venture be profitable? Have all the key financial
considerations been taken into account in the projections? Does the return justify the investment and the risk?
Management: Is the management knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and committed to the venture? Can they execute it? Do they
have a track record?
Action Plan: Are milestones real? Is the venture stable and growth oriented or speculative and risky? Does it have high
sensitivity to the actions of competitors, technology, the industry, etc.? When and how will the exit likely
happen? Is the strategy appropriate?

A well developed business venture with proven technology, executed partnership agreements and beta
customers will have a higher chance of success. To protect the privacy of the information/ideas of the
contestants, Judges are requested that no copies of original submissions are made and all copies submitted
are returned. The contestants should note that a short description of the business venture may be used in
public documentation relating to the contest.

Confidentiality (Statement)
Only individuals who have access to contestants business plans are the judges, assigned to read the plans.
The judges sign a confidentiality agreement before they are privy to the business plan and Intellectual
Property documents. The judges are largely professional venture capital investors or other business leaders
who regularly deal with confidential information in the normal course of their work. Judges are requested
to treat all materials submitted with the same care and respect for confidentiality as they would for their
own business documents. Judges are also asked to remove themselves from judging, if they have a real
conflict of interest. Confidential information does not include information independently developed by a
recipient, received from or disclosed by a third party not in breach of obligations of confidentiality,
information publicly disclosed by contestant, information disclosed pursuant to a Court Order, or
information retained in the unaided memory of a party which was not disclosed in a tangible media.
