The success and final outcome of this project required a lot of guidance and assistance from many
people and I am extremely fortunate to have gotten this help along the way to completing my
S.B.A. whatever I have done is only due to such guidance and assistance and I would not forget to
say thanks.
Plenty respect and thanks to Mr. Mark Thomas (teacher) for giving me an opportunity to
do my School based Assessment (S.B.A.). I am extremely grateful to him for providing such a nice
support and guidance.
I would not forget to remember Mr. Lee and Ms. Henry for providing me with my financial
support, also like to thank my uncle, aunty and cousins for helping me. Last but not least I would
like to thank my heavenly father for giving me the strength and never give up on something I have

INTRODUCTION
In this portfolio we shall be discussing my role as an assistant referee and chief referee. My role as
a chief referee had a lot of difficulties in some areas but they were manageable enough to fulfill my
goals. We will also find out how I assigned matches and how well their role. The competition took
place at McGrath High school. It was an inter-class competition used to carry out our School Based
Assessment (S.B.A). Also you will find all my match cards, assignment and most important my
reflection.












MY ROLE EVENT OFFICIAL (REFEREE)
Who is an Referee?
A referee is an person of authority, in a variety of sports, who is responsible for presiding over the
game from a neutral point of view and making an final decision that enforce the rules of the sports,
including sportsmanship decision such as ejection.














Who is an Assistant Referee
An assistant referee is one of several official who assist the referee in controlling a match, two
official traditionally known as linesmen (or lineswomen if they are female), stand on the
touchlines, while a fourth official assists administrative or other match related tasks as directed by
the referee.
















Role and Responsibility
Power of an referee.
Stopping the match because of outside interference of any kind.
Stopping the match if, in its opinion, a player is seriously injured and ensuring that he is
removed from the field of play
An injured player may only return to the field of play after the match has restarted
Allowing play to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is, in his opinion, only
slightly injured
Allowing play to continue when the team against which an offence has been committed will
benefit from such an advantage and penalizing the original offence if the anticipated
advantage does not ensure.
Taking disciplinary action against players guilty of caution able and sending off offences.
He is not obligated to take this action immediately but must do so when the ball next goes
out of play
Taking action against teams officials who fail to conduct themselves in a responsible
manner and may, at his discretion, expect them from the field of play and its immediate
surrounds.





















Duties of referee

Enforcing the law of the game
Controls the match in cooperation with the assistant soccer referees and, where
applicable, with the fourth official
acts as timekeeper and keeps a record of the match
Ensuring that any ball used meets the requirement
Ensuring that the players equipment meets the requirement
Ensuring that any player that is injured e.g. bleeding should leave the field of play. The
player may only return if it is covered and by a signal from the referee
Allows play to continue when the team against which an offence has been committed
will benet from such an advantage and penalizes the original offence if the anticipated
advantage does not ensue at that time.












General duties of an assistant referee
When the whole ball has passed outside the field of play.
Which side is entitled to return the ball into the field of play.
When a player may be penalized for an offside offence.
To assist the fourth official (if present) in notifying the centre referee that a substitution is being
requested.
When offences or other infringements of the Laws of the Game have been committed of which
the referee does not have an adequate view.
The assistant referee will assist in player management during free kicks, as well as provide
visual assistance during penalty kicks.
























Workshop/Seminar
In my role an team of official referee was told to help out with the inexperience upcoming official.
No one turn up at the giving date and time. Only Kimberly Lee which is me turns up. Shantel and
Natalie showed me the signs and signals of a referee and also an assistant referee and told me to
show the others. I plan an training but no one turned up. I planned an next one which was going to
do in our physical education practical class when our teacher Mr. Thomas did not came to school.
They played it out.

















Gathering Material
Gathering material was hard. I organize the referee clothing and told them to bring a fee of $300 to
buy the clothing. Our suit was pink T-shirt and black shorts with black socks and boots if they had
any. The money also helps to buy the material to make the flag. The flag was made by Shanor
Walker mother free of cost. I got the sticks from Mr. Robinson also the whistle which we borrowed
and didnt use. I got some of my information from off the internet and also get permission from past
students of the physical education class to help assist me with the clothing and how it should look n
fits. Shantel OConnor and Natalie Mitchell were the only two referee that helped us with gathering
material.

Reflection
In my School Based Assessment (S.B.A), we had an inter-class competition with grades seven to
eight. There were many teams participating in the competition. In this competition my role was a
referee. I enjoyed been a referee. I was an enjoyable experience with my fellow associate. It started
an evening after School, I had my first match of been a referee. It started although, I was trying to
be professional while doing my duty. When I was caring out my job as the whistle blew my heart
skipped a beat the way I was nervous. On Thursday may 2, 2013, I had first worse match ever with
7mc5 vs 7mc4. The teams who played were unruly and did not like any one speak to them on any
mistakes. They where offside couple times well although I like the side I could not cheer or talk to
them I had to bring out my job and do the talking after the match.
The best match out of all games that played was on Tuesday may 7, 2013 with 8G4 vs 8G1.
The teams came out in some beautiful jersey and they all had on the proper gears. 8G4 win with a
fine victory, after the game we the referee got Gatorade from the coach. That was the only team
thanks us for our hard work. In some match I had to be working the line often because the coaches
or manager where always on the line. I got fed up and told the referee which was Mr. Mark Thomas
about the coaches and manager and the manager for 8G4 was send off the field completely. I started
out as an assistant referee. Andre Brooks was the chief referee. He was not doing anything so it
was handed over to me as the chief referee.
I assign three persons each for a match but some did not bring any clothes, so I had to do it.
Before the match started, we get our gears, I had collect money from the rest of my co-workers
which was hard because most persons told me some dates and when I went to them they gave me a
different date. The money was to buy material to make the flag and to buy clothes and socks. The
flag was done free of cost by Shanor Walker mom. We had made training session but no one turned
up only me. So Shantel OConnor and Natalie Mitchell showed me the signs and signals to show
the others. I made training session also and no one turned up, they told me that they were busy and
have a lot of works to do, that make me to get upset more. I also got a book from Shantel with the
referee signs and rule to read upon and return it and I did so. Overall I enjoy my role as an referee,.
