Name of the School : St. Thomas H.S.S Division : B
Subject : Chemistry Strength : 37/39
Unit : Structure of an Atom Duration : 40 minutes
Topic : Isotopes and Isobars Date : 1-8-2014
Age : 13+

Curricular Statement Through observation and discussion, pupil develops understanding about isotopes
and isobars.
Content Analysis
Terms : Isotopes, Isobars
Facts 1. The mass number of hydrogen atom is one.
2. The atomic number of hydrogen atom is one
3. The electronic configuration of Lithium atom is 2,1
4. The electronic configuration of sodium atom is 2, 8, 1
5. K shell can accommodate only two electrons.
6. L shell can accommodate eight electrons.
7. M shell can accommodate eighteen electrons.

Concept 1. Isotopes are atoms of same element having same atomic number but different
mass number.
2. Isobars are elements having same mass number but different atomic number.

Learning Outcomes The learner,
develops remembering about the above terms, facts and concepts.
develops understanding about different isotopes and isobars.
applies acquired knowledge is new relevant situations.
develops process skills such as observation, inference making etc.
analyse the different types of isobars and isotopes.
develops the ability to evaluate the acquired concepts and principles.
develops interest in the field of chemistry.
develops components of creativity such as combining ideas, lateral thinking etc.
develops scientific attitude.

Pre requisites Pupil knows about atomic number, mass number and electronic configuration.
Teaching Learning Audio Visual aids.
Resources 20 small pieces of coloured paper, 10 cardboards.
Classroom Interaction Procedure Pupil Response
Introduction
Teacher says You have learned about protons, electrons and neutrons. Students replies.
Can you tell me the number of protons and electrons in hydrogen atom? Teacher then No: of protons - 1
asks students We have studied about Protium, Deuterium and Tritium. No: of protons - 1
What is the atomic number and mass number of these three Hydrogen atoms?
Lets see more elements like this. Atomic numbers are same
Mass number is different
PRESENTATION
Activity 1 Students actively
Teacher tells students Today we can play a game. The teacher then explains the participate in the game.
rule of the game. In this game teacher writes twenty elements with atomic number and mass Students find out the
number in twenty small piece of coloured paper . After folding the papers put all these in person which has the
box. Then theteacher shuffles the paper and asks every student to take one piece of same atomic number
paper and open it. Then the students have to find out the person who has same atomic which is similar in
number like his/her is the hand. the piece of paper.

2. What about the atomic number of same elements? They are same

3. What about the mass number of elements? They are different.

4. Can you define these elements? These are atoms of the
same element having
same atomic number but
different mass number
With the help of teacher, student names the concept as isotopes (BB).

Consolidation
Isotopes are atoms of the same element having same atomic number but different Students attained the concept.

Activity 2.
Teacher then presents 10 cardboards which contain elements having
different atomic number and same mass number. Teacher then places all these Students actively participated in
cardboards in the desk and asks two or three students to come forward to the activity.
paste the same which is having same mass number, in one side of the black board.
