METHOD STATEMENT FOR MICROPILING WORKS




1.0 Survey Works

1.1 Survey Control Points
The survey control points, typically the TBMs are determined by the Main
Contractors licensed surveyor.

1.2 Pile Position
Every pile position is pre-surveyed by the Main Contractors licensed surveyor
in reference to the grid lines or the site boundary line. The micro pile position
is pegged and indicated clearly using timber stake.


2.0 Access and Platform Preparation

2.1 Access
Main Contractor shall provide direct access to facilitate the mobilisation of
plant & equipment and delivery of materials to the piling areas. Any
obstructions that hindering piling works shall be removed or dismantled by the
Main Contractor prior to commencement of pile installation.

2.2 Working Platform
Main Contractor shall also prepare working platform surrounding pile position
to facilitate the installation of micropiles, including excavation and backfill
with suitable material. The condition of working platform shall be suitable for
micropile rig. In any case, the platform shall be flat, dry and stable.


3.0 Micropiling Works

3.1 General
The basic principle of operation is to drill and install 165mm grouted micro
pile with OD88.9mm x 6.45mm thick N80 used API pipe as main steel
reinforcement.

3.2 Equipment
3.2.1 Drill rig capable of drilling a hole of 165mm to required depth.
3.2.2 Grouting mixer and piston pump for tremie grouting.
3.2.3 Water/mud pump with sufficient pressure to wash out the cutting
materials from the borehole.

3.3 Drilling method and procedures for borehole:-
3.3.1 Rotary water-flush method will be employed to drill the borehole of
165mm. Water will be used as a flushing media to flush out cuttings
while advancing the borehole.

3.3.2 Typically 3.0m to 6.0m long drill rods will be employed for drilling of
165mm diameter vertical hole. The drill rods shall be monitored by
split level frequently so as to keep it vertical.

3.3.3 A tricone roller bit attached to drilling rod will be used to advance the
borehole. While drilling, the drill rods are progressively thread-jointed
to compose the require length to reach the toe level of pile.

3.3.4 Short length temporary casing will be used to stabilize borehole when
top overburden soil layer of borehole is unstable.

3.3.5 The temporary drill casing will stop at the required level. The borehole
is advanced to the specified depth into hard layer by using the tricone
roller bit.

3.3.6 Throughout the process of drilling, the borehole is flushed with water
to remove cuttings or spoils. The borehole will be flushed several runs
upon achieving the required length or termination depth is reached.

3.3.7 The depth of the borehole is measured from the platform level to the
toe of pile by tallying the total length of drill rods adopted.


3.4 Reinforcement

3.4.1 Upon reaching the specific depth and completion of flushing the
borehole, the drill rods are gradually withdrawn from the borehole.

3.4.2 Main reinforcement of API used pipe OD88.9mm x 6.45mm thick N80
will be installed.

3.4.3 Length of API required for each pile position is computed from the
bottom of the hole to the proposed pile cut off level.

3.4.4 Centralizer of R8 rebar shall be welded to API pipe at 3m spacing
throughout the required length. The API pipe is then inserted into the
borehole by using a winch attaching to the drill rig.

3.4.5 An approximately 25mm diameter grout hose is inserted into the base
of borehole through the hollow centre of API pipe. The other end of
the grout hose is connected to the grout pump. The borehole is then
ready for grouting.


3.5 Grouting Works

3.5.1 Cement grouting is carried out using tremie method.

3.5.2 Mixing of cement grout is carried out using high mixer capacity. Based
on the grout strength requirement of 30 N/mm, a water cement ratio of
0.45 is adopted, at which 22.5 litres of water is mixed with a 50Kg of
ordinary Portland cement. A 500g of Sika Intraplast-Z shall be added
as an additive of cement grout. Each mixing will be discharged into an
agitation tank to be pumped into the borehole.

3.5.3 Cement grout will be pumped using a grout pump through the grout
hose into the bottom of the hole. The tremie grouting process
essentially displays whatever cuttings remains in the bottom of the
borehole.

3.5.4 Grouting process will proceed uninterrupted until fresh grout is
overflow discharged from the borehole. Grout hose and temporary
casing is now removed and grouting complete.

3.5.5 Generally, a set of six numbers of 100x100x100mm grout cubes will
be collected for the batch of grouting on that day. Grout cubes will be
cured in a water tank at the site.
These cubes will be tested 7 and 28-days strength at an independent
laboratory to be approved by the Engineers.

3.6 Disposal of Slurry

3.6.1 All waste or slurry discharged from the borehole shall be cleared and
stockpiled using sandbag for drying purpose before remove off-site.


3.7 Pile Head Preparation

3.7.1 Subject to the Main Contractors actual sequence of works, normally in
at least 7-days after the completion of grouting, the Main Contractor
may commence the pilecap excavation (if any) to expose pile head
with all necessary precaution taken. Required cut off level will be
surveyed by the Main Contractor and marked on the exposed micropile
head. Manual breaker is then used to break the cement grout above the
soffit of pilecap. Thereafter, oxy cutter will be used to cut the API pipe
at the required cut off level and full weld to mild steel bearing plate
with U-bar to receive the pilecaps main reinforcement.
