Director of the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell and William Nechamen, Chief of the Floodplain
Management Section at NYSDEC.

Updated Projections for Climate Change in the Hudson Valley, Dr. Art DeGaetano, Cornell University
Dr. DeGaetano will present localized climate projections for temperature, precipitation and sea-level rise for this
century. Be the first to hear these new projections. Case studies from different sectors, such as water resources,
ecosystems, energy, public health and transportation will be used to illustrate potential impacts of climate change
and adaptation strategies.

Flood risk and the challenge of public perception, Bill Nechamen, Chief, Floodplain Mgmt
Section, NYSDEC
William Nechamen will speak on FEMA flood maps, flood risk and public perception. The Hudson Valley is already
experiencing intense storms and flooding. Both are projected to increase as the climate continues to
change. Communities can prepare now by understanding the risk of flooding and how floodplain maps are
derived.

Several New York State initiatives on climate change are in full swing and findings will be published within the
year, including NYS Sea Level Rise Task Force report, and the NYS Climate Action Plan. Kristin Marcell of
NYSDEC will provide a brief update on these initiatives. Barbara Fratianni of NYSDEC will explain how your
community can join the group of 35 Climate Smart Communities in the Hudson Valley.
