I.

Objectives:
- To determine the three basic properties of fluids by the use of hydrometer.
- To determine if there are changes in the properties of fluid with respect to change in
temperature.

II. Materials/ Equipments:
a. Hydrometer
b. Thermometer
c. 4 types of liquids
o Tap water
o Distilled water (absolute)
o Soda (any brand)
o Vegetable oils
d. 2 graduated cylinder

III. Discussion:
The determination of the properties of fluid is an important thing in Mechanics of
fluids. Three basic properties are to be determined
a. Density
b. Sp. Weight
c. Sp. Gravity
Density is defined as ratio of mass over volume. Sp. Weight over volume and Sp.
Gravity is defined as the ratio of a fluid density over the standard density of water at
4C (1000kg). Many texts in fluid mechanics have stated that the density of fluids
varies with temperature. For water, the relationship is mathematically defined to be

H20
= 1000 (T-4)
2
/180
Where T- recorded temperature
While the values of water densities can be computed using the equation
above, this equation was derived using the equation above, this equation was derived
by plotting the values of density and temperature.

Only by validating the equation by actually recording the density can the
second objective be answered.

IV. Procedures:
a. On a 1000ml beaker cold tap water
b. Measure the temperature and drop the hydrometer. You can measure the sp.
Gravity at the hydrometer.
c. Note the change in temperature as well as the change in the sp. Gravity
d. Record the changes
e. Repeat the process for distilled water and soda

VI. Conclusions:
Using hydrometer in determining the three basic properties of fluid which is the specific
weight, density and specific gravity, we therefore conclude that these properties of fluid change
with respect to the change of temperature, since most of the result weve recorded shows that
values for the density, specific weight and specific gravity for different types of fluid samples
changes as their temperature also changes.
VII. Recommendations:
During the experiment, weve noticed that most of us had a hard time to proceed in
determining density, specific weight and specific gravity of the fluid samples in different
temperature because of the lack of equipments to finish the experiment in time and because the
hydrometer we were using has only a minimum value of 1.0.
Due to the problems weve encountered, we then recommend that more equipments and
apparatus such as 1000ml graduated cylinders, hydrometer and a Bunsen burner to increase to
the fluids temperature be provided to the next batch of students who will perform the experiment.
We also recommend to the students who will conduct this experiment to familiarize themselves
in using the hydrometer and be cautious in conducting the experiment and minimize errors.
