ASSIGNMENT
RESOURCE MATERIALS FOR TEACHING
MATHEMATICS
INTRODUCTION
In ancient times resource materials were exposed by the teacher and the
students had to memorize the content exposed by the teachers. The students were
made to repeat small bits of such knowledge again and again until these were
registered permanently in their mind. Thus a teacher and student had to keep every bit
of knowledge in their mind and it was recalled and used as and when required.
Knowledge now came to be preserved in the form of books rather than in memorized
form. These knowledge, activities, interest providing books are collectively called
resource materials in the teaching process. Workbook, handbook, textbook,
educational CDs, Learning modules, educational websites etc are some of the
resource materials for teaching mathematics.
Students learn best by doing things: Constructing, Touching, Moving,
Investigating. There are many ways of using cheap and available resource materials in
the classroom so that students can learn by doing. Teachers were using these resource
materials to reinforce previous learning, model problem solving, and explain
concepts. Students were using the resource materials independently from the teacher
to solve problems demonstrate strategies to other students and expand their
understanding of key concepts. In most of the classrooms the resource materials were
widely available for teachers and students use. These are well organized and
teachers can able to access them easily. They facilitated more effective strategies of
teaching and learning. This section reports on the various resource materials using in
the teaching of mathematics and their needs and importance.

MATHEMATICS TEXT BOOK
It is an important source for learning mathematics and it plays a key role in
effective teaching and learning. The textbook stimulates reflective thinking and
develop problem solving ability among students. It presents real learning situations
which are challenging and interesting for the students and not render itself as a means
of rote learning.
Mathematics text books are the informational resources that provide the
students with information they need to know about their class. It also enhances or
reinforce their understanding of the course of the content.
Mathematics text books are provide for a range of student abilities. It allows for the
application and extension of student skills. Text book of mathematics must be
visually attractive and have clear instructions. Textbooks facilitate independent and
co- operative work and have learning activities and outcomes that are consistent with
the achievement of objectives.

Relevance of Mathematics Textbooks
1. A mathematics text book provide the teacher with the basic information
considered essential in attaining the objectives of mathematics education and
helps the teachers to plan appropriate learning experience.
2. A good text book present a variety of worked out examples on each topic. This
helps the teacher in getting acquainted with different types of problems and
the methods to solve them. This gives him more self confidence while
teaching.
5

3. A text book provides insight to the teachers in planning the lesson, in selecting
the problem to be worked out, the methods of teaching to be adopted, and the
teaching aids to be used.
4. The textbook provides important source of material for reviewing and
recapitulating.
5. It helps the teachers in teaching and correlating mathematics with other
subjects and aspects.
6. New learning activities such as individual projects laboratory experiments and
demonstrations suggested in the textbook can be carried out by the students. It
permit each student to read and carryout the activity at his own rate of
comprehension.
Qualities of Textbook
1. It should in accordance with the aims and objectives of teaching
mathematics in that particular class.
2. It should provide for individual differences. It should meet the needs of
students of varying abilities, interests and attitudes.
3. The textbooks should be of latest edition with necessary modifications.
4. The content of the textbook should have a direct, practical, social, utility
value.
5. The presentation of the subject matter must be attractive and interesting
with appropriate illustrations in terms of pictures, diagrams and figures.
6. It should be written according to prescribed syllabus and every aspect of
the syllabus should be adequately covered
MATHEMATICS WORK BOOK
A workbook is a modification of the textbook and it is slowly coming into the
mathematics classroom. A workbook should be written by an experienced teacher
with care and foresight. Workbooks vary greatly in content and organization.
Workbooks of the later type serve as a combined course of study, a study guide and a
record book.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF WORKBOOK?
A good book serves the following functions.
It serves as a supplementary teaching device.
Slow learness can learn at their own pace.
It provide opportunities for pupils to develop computation and problem
solving skills.
It suggest appropriate activities and exercise in addition to what the textbook
does.
It facilitates uniformity in students work and facilitates easy correction of
their work.
It provides activities and exercise in addition to the textbook problems and
exercises.
ADVANTAGE OF WORK BOOK
It fosters scientific thinking.
1. Pupils who have missed time because of illness or from having left school
prematurely can make up work without close super vision.
2. The beginning teacher and the inadequately prepared teacher also find
workbooks of value.
3. Help pupils who are working under self direction to study more
effectively.
4. Heavily burdened teachers find the better workbook useful in saving
time and energy.
DISADVANTAGES OF WORKBOOK
1. Workbooks are relatively inflexible.
2. The content is highly organized and cannot be altered easily.
3. There is little provision for the infusion of new materials.
4. Workbook are directed towards uniform outcomes, if they dominate the
program, pupils have little opportunity to develop special interest and talents.
7

5. Workbooks deny pupils any participation in the planning process, any
incentive to do independent work any practice in formulating their own
problem and any encouragement to do their own thinking.
MATHEMATICS HANDBOOK
The teachers handbook aims at helping the teachers to monitor the
programme. It contains list of teaching aids, summarization of learning an exercise in
organization a medium for self expression, an indication of progress and
assignments of various kind. A bibliography of relevant books and journal should be
included.
The handbook is for mathematics teachers working in higher, primary and
secondary schools. The book will help teachers improve the quality of mathematical
education is because it deals specifically with some of challenges which many maths
teachers in the developing world face such as a lack of readymade teaching aids,
possible textbooks shortages, and teaching and learning mathematics in a second
language.

WHY HAS THIS BOOK BEEN WRITTEN?
Teachers all over the world have developed different ways to teach
mathematics successful in order to raise standards of achievement.Mathematics
teachers have
Developing ways of using locally available resources.
8

Adapted mathematics to their own cultural contexts and to the tasks and
problems in their own communities.
Introduced local maths- related activities into their classrooms.
Improved students understanding of English in the mathematics classrooms.
AIMS OF THE TEACHERS HANDBOOK
Handbook make mathematics more interesting and more relevant to their
students.
Understand some of the language and cultural issues of their students.
To contribute to improving the quality of mathematics education and to
raising standards of achievement.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN THEMES OF HANDBOOKS?
There are four main issues in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
a) Teaching methods
Students learn best when the teacher uses a wide range of teaching methods. These
books give example and ideas for using many different methods in the classroom.
b) Resources and teaching aids
Student learns best by doing thing: constructing touching, moving, investigating.
There are many ways of using help and available resources in the classroom so that
students can learn by doing. This books shows how to teach a lot of using very few
resources such as bottle tops, string, match boxes.
c) The language of the learner
Language is as important as mathematics in the mathematics classroom. In addition,
learning in a second language causes special difficulties. This book suggests activities
to help student us e language to improve their understanding of mathematics.
d) The culture of the learner
Student do all sorts of mathematics at home and in their communities. This is
often very different from the mathematics they do in school. This books provides
activities which link these two types of mathematics together.

LEARNING MODULES
A learning module consist of content items with an accompanying path for
progressing through the items. Faculty can decide whether students should view the
content in any order that they choose. Any type of content, including text, audio,
video, quizzes or even a mashup may be included in learning module.
A learning module is a logically structured collection of course content.
Conceptually it is similar to a chapter in a text books. A learning module may consist
of several sections and activities. Faculty members can aid folders and sub folders to a
learning module and impose a hierarchical stretcher over the content.
EDUCATIONAL CDS
Educational CDs plays a key role in the effective teaching and learning of
mathematics. India is today well acquainted with the use of computers and its
application. Most student,, even at the LKG or primary levels operate the computer
with great ease and confidence. Now many companies introduced multimedia
educational CDS for this generation and believe that this result-oriented educational
software will be of great help in studying complex subjects like mathematics. The
educational CDS are also beneficial for teachers as they are equipped with animation
technology and are based on chapter wise classification.
Educational CDS are useful for schools institutions as they can be used to
overall passing percentage and increase understanding of mathematics by its students.
Main advantage of the educational CDS is that they are available at all stationary
stories at very reasonable prices. In some CDS chapters are explained with the help
of animations and voice over. In some cases interactive tests are included at the end of
the chapter.
