History
The formation of a separate corporation exclusively for operating
long distance express services connecting all the district
headquarters in the State of Tamil Nadu with Chennai was thought
by the Government of Tamil Nadu during the year 1975. Hence the
long distance express services that were operated by erstwhile
Tamil Nadu State Transport Department were transferred as the
Express wing of Pallavan Transport Corporation with effect from
15th Sep 1975. The express wing of Pallavan Transport Corporation was registered on 14 January 1980 and named as
Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation.(TTC) During the early 1990s it was then bifurcated as J Jayalalitha Transport
Corporation(JJTC) and TTC in which JJTC operated interstate routes. JJTC was then renamed as Rajiv Gandhi
Transport Corporation. Both TTC and RGTC was later merged into one and called SETC in 1996.
Initially after independence, when the tram service came to an end, due to strike of employees, the then state
government, was forced to go for a public transport system run by the state. Thiru Kumarasamy Raja was the Chief
Minister. Hence the entire city transport service by bus was owned by the State Government, the services to other
places from Capital was run by Government only. After Thiru C N Annadurai as Chief Minister, the state become
Tamil Nadu State. It is worthy to mention that as per Tamil grammar, it has to come as 'thamil nattu arasu' then a G.O.
was issued by Anna (C N Annadurai), the CM as per request/advise by thiru C Rajagopalachari, to keep it as TAMIL
NADU the name. When M. Karunanithi became the Chief Minister, he nationalised all the big private transport units
and named them after the kingdom of ancient tamils as Cheran (Kovai), Cholan (Trichy), Pandian (Madurai) and
Pallavan (Chennai). Mr M Karunanithi did some remarkable things - as PWD minister, he was the reason to widen all
road bridges, he was the first person to eradicate Ricksha pulling by human beings.
