Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (born March 20 1986),
better known by stage name Lady Gaga, is an American
electro-pop singer, songwriter and producer. Lady Gaga was
born in New York to an Italian family and grew up in Manhattan.
She got her stage name when music producer Rob Fusari
compared her vocal style to Freddie Mercury and took the
name Gaga from the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga".
As a child she learned how to play the piano by herself at age of 4. When she was 17
she was accepted into New York University Tisch School of the Arts where she studied
music. After leaving university, Gaga left her parents house and started hanging out in
the Lower East Side doing drugs and appearing in burlesque shows at bars with drag
queens and go- go dancers. She admits that her father couldnt even look at her and she
says he just didnt understand.
In the early years of Lady Gaga in music industry (at age of 19) she was working as
songwriter for lots of bands and popstars including Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls,
Fergie and The New Kids on the Block. When singer and record producer Akon
recognized that Gaga also had vocal talent, he signed her to his own label, Kon Live
Distribution, and then started to work on her own new material for her debut album. It
was called The Fame and was released in 2008.
The albums first single, Just Dance debuted on April 8 2008 was a huge success and it
was downloaded more than 419,000 copies in a single week. On The 2009 Grammys it
was also nominated for Best Dance Recording .
On 12 January 2008, Gaga announced she would embark on her first tour, The Fame
Ball Tour. The tour kicked off March 12.
Shes now performing around the world in The Monster Ball Tour.
Lady Gaga was inspired by David Bowie and Queen, along with Madonna and Michael
Jackson. She apparently got rid of her
brunette hair and died it blonde because
she kept being mistaken for singer Amy
Winehouse.
