During a standstill, the space heaters installed in
the stator end shields should be switched on and
maintained in this condition until the generator is
started up again. The space heaters prevent the
formation of moisture condensate in the generator
interior (Alternatively the generator is equipped with
an air dryer).
Even after having been taken out of service, a
generator cannot be left fully unattended. During a
shutdown not exceeding 10 days, the unit should be
checked once a day. When the generator is to be
shut down for a longer period up to six months, the
gaps between the rotor shaft journals and the stator
end shields should be sealed with cotton cord and
acid free Vaseline applied to the rotor shaft journals.
When recommissioning the generator, be sure to
carefully wipe off the Vaseline from the shaft journals
to prevent it from coming into contact with the turbine
oil.
Preservation measures will have to be taken when
the generator is to be shut down for a period
exceeding two months. The scope of the preservation
work required depends on the duration of the
shutdown, on the overall conditions in the vicinity of
the unit and on the extent to which checks and
inspections are possible during such periods.
It will be necessary to request the services of
specially trained SSBHEL personnel for the execution
of such preservation measures. If it is intended to
shut down the generator for a longer period, the
competent BHEL L Office should be informed, when
requesting the services of the erection personnel,
how long the unit is to be shut down, on the
conditions prevailing in the vicinity of the unit during
the outage and whether customers personnel will be
available for any required checks. The necessary
preparations for the preservation will then be made in
all details by the competent BHEL Office.
The services of BHEL 6 erection personnel
should again be requested if a preserved unit is to be
recommissioned. The preservation measures will
then be abolished by the BHEL55 personnel. For
recommissioning, the same procedure should be
followed as during initial startup.

Preservation measures will have to be taken when
a generator is to be shut down for a period exceeding
two months.
The scope of the preservation work required
depends on the duration of the shutdown, on the
overall conditions in the vicinity of the unit and on the
extent to which checks and maintenance are possible
during such period.
The preservation measures recommended in the
following are sufficient under normal conditions. High
relative humidity in combination with severe
temperature changes involves the risk that the
temperature of certain surfaces in the generator may
drop below the dew point, resulting in the possible
formation of a moisture film due to condensation on
these generator components.

1 Generator Interior
The air dryer should be switched on to protect the
stator and rotor windings against moisture by
maintaining the generator interior in a dry condition.
Prior to recommissioning the generator, the
insulation resistances of the stator and rotor windings
should be measured and the windings dried, if
required.

2 Bearings
No preservation measures are required on the
bearings of the turbogenerator.
However, the bearing oil system should be placed
into operation once a week and the entire system
adequately flushed with water-free oil. After activation
of the oil system, the rotor should be operated on the
turning gear for approximately three to four hours.

3 Coolers
All coolers should be drained on their cooling
water sides and dried in a suitable manner. During
the shutdown, the drains and vents should be kept
open.
Caution: Never leave water-filled coolers standing
idle for several weeks.
For cooler drying, hot air or dry ambient air may be
used which should be admitted by means of blowers
via the cooling water inlet/outlet flanges. A fan-forced
heater with a rating of 1 to 2 kW has proved
satisfactory for this purpose.

4 Exciter
The exciter should be protected against moisture
by maintaining the space below the enclosure at a
moderate temperature by suitable means. This may
be achieved by mobile air blower.
The carbon brushes should be lifted off and the
shaft covered with oiled paper.

5 Bright Components
All accessible bright components, e.g. exposed
shaft portions, should be protected with a suitable
corrosion inhibiting oil or grease, e.g. Tectyl.
