INDUSTRIAL CAPSULE: FURNITURE IN CHINA
14 Feb 2013
OVERVIEW
With the rapid growth of Chinas economy, especially the boom in the real estate industry, Chinas
furniture market has entered a phase of skyrocketing expansion, at a speed much greater than its
counterparts. Over 2006-2012, Chinas furniture market grew by a 20% CAGR annually, reaching RMB750
billion in 2012. Accelerating urbanisation in the country stimulated demand for furniture, although the
market is still at an early development stage, with only 16% of all orders coming directly from Chinese
households.
A 43% share of sales was attributable to capital formation activities by major B2B buyers, in particular
retailers, restaurant owners and local hoteliers. Public administration institutions accounted for 7% of all
value orders, followed by the automotive industry, with a 6% share. Other big spenders include education
establishments, as well as construction enterprises.
Chairs and seats are the best selling items in China, commanding a 47% share of the local furniture market.
Kitchen furniture formed the second largest category, with 13%, followed by office and shop furniture with
a 10% share. Such revenue distribution comes as no surprise in this market, where more than 80% of all
furniture orders are attributable to industrial and commercial clients. However, the picture is gradually
changing, and private consumers are playing an ever more important role in the market composition. For
example, demand for contemporary bedroom furniture, kitchen interiors and home office furniture have all
experienced strong growth over the past few years, and this is expected to continue in the future.
