PROJECT TITLE-:
Structural Behavior of BUBBLE DECK SLAB and their Comparison with Conventional Slab.
Objective/Aim-:
This project aims to compare structural behavior of conventional method of slab casting with
Bubble deck technology of slab casting to reduce dead load of building as well as cost of
construction and to provide an ecofriendly building by replacing excessive concrete from slab by
plastic balls.
Introduction of Bubble Deck technology -:

The bubble deck slab is revolutionary by axial concrete floor system developed in Europe. The
traditional bubble deck technology uses sphere made of recycled industrial plastic to create air
voids while providing strength through arch action. this result in dramatic reduction of dead
load by as much as 50% allowing much longer spans and less supporting structure and
traditional solutions. Therefore the bubble deck has many advantages as compare to traditional
concrete slab such as lower total cost reduce material use ,enhanced structural efficiency
decrease construction time and is a green technology

The new prefabricated construction technology using Bubble Deck slab is recently applied in
many industrial projects in the world. Bubble Deck slab uses hollow spherical balls made by
recycled plastic and therefore it is an innovatory method of virtually eliminating the concrete
part in the middle of conventional slab which does not contribute to the structural
performance. This hence reduces significantly the structural self weight.

The Bubble Deck is a two-way hollow deck in which plastic balls serves the purpose of
eliminating concrete that has no carrying effect.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT-:
As per the past investigations and innovations it has already proven that a bubble deck slab offers
same strength as conventional slab of same thickness. It has the same applied load carrying
capacity with only 50% of concrete required for a solid concrete slab.
In the proposed project we are going to design a residential building with the help of
conventional techniques of construction then after we would calculate the bending moments and
shear force developed at different sections of building, with the help of suitable software, due to
the dead load as well as due to live load then after we will replace the conventional slab used in
building by bubble deck slab and will study the structural behavior of building. We will also
estimate the cost of construction for conventional method and for bubble deck method of slab
casting so as to check whether the use of this technique is economical or not.
Techniques used for bubble deck slab parameters computations-:
The size of plastic balls those will used in construction will be selected on the basis of thickness
of slab, shear factor, rigidity factor and axis spacing as described in bubble deck design guide
book. The relative bending moment, transverse force etc. will be calculated with the help of same
and rest of the design can be performed using conventional methods.

Advantages of bubble deck slab over conventional slab-:
Reduced weight
Increased strength
Larger span
Fewer columns
No beams or ribs under the ceiling; pillars have no capital
Savings in materials - up to 50 % - 1 kg of plastic replaces more than 100 kg of concrete
Less energy consumption - both in production, transport and carrying out
Less emission - exhaust gases from production and transport, especially CO2
No waste generation - 100 % recycling
Better social environment: Improvement of working conditions
Reduced building time means less disturbance of surroundings Less emission of noise -
in production, transport and assembly
Building based on this technology-:
University, Utrecht in the Netherlands
Sogn Arena, Oslo in Norway
City hall and offices, Glostrup in Denmark

Scope in India-:
The technology was invented by JORGEN BREUNING of Denmark about 24 years ago it is
now gaining popularity both in Europe and in Asia. A joint venture in the form of bubble deck
soundaraya building systems Pvt. Ltd., has brought this technology in India. There is one of the
main advantage that India is a developing country and needs cost effective techniques for
infrastructure development and this is also provides a way through which emission of CO2 from
concrete can be controlled. Hence there is lot of advantages and future scope of this technique in
India
