AEROBIC EXERCISE
A erobic exercise is any sustained activity that sends oxygen to your m uscles via your heart and lungs.
A erobic exercise im proves the tness of your lungs and heart - your bodys m ost im portant m uscle.
A erobic exercise tness is prom oted by any activity that uses your large m uscle -arm s, legs, or buttock, for exam ple.
Your heart beats quickly and you breathe deeply. A n aerobic exercise should be part of your entire exercise routine.
WEIGHT TRAINING
A long w ith aerobic exercising w hich helps get rid of and keep off the excess fat that our bodies can store,
w eight training is an essential part of the exercise routine process. W eight training helps tone, build and strengthen
m uscle. If you are w orking above your target zone, you m ay w ant to do a less am ount of reps.
A nd as alw ays consult your physician before beginning any exercise program .
MUSCLE CHART
C YC LE
The exercise routine that is perform ed on the cycle w ill develop the low er body m uscle group as w ell as condition the
circulatory system and provide a good aerobic w orkout . These m uscle groups are highlighted on the m uscle chart below .
6. FITNESS TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
EXERCISE INTENSITY
To m axim ize the benets of exercising, it is im portant to exercise w ith the
proper intensity. The proper intensity level can be found by using your heart
rate as a guide. For effective aerobic exercise, your heart rate should be
m aintained at a level betw een 65% and 85% of your m axim um heart rate
as you exercise. This is know n as your target zone. You can nd your target
zone in the table below .
D uring the rst few m onths of your exercise program , keep your heart rate near the low end of your target zone as you
exercise. A fter a few m onths, your heart rate can be increased gradually until it is near the m iddle of your target zone as
you exercise.
To m easure your heart rate, stop exercising but continue m oving your legs or w alking around and place tw o ngers on
your w rist. Take a six-second heartbeat count and m ultiply the results by 10 to nd your heart rate. For exam ple, if your
six-second heartbeat count is 14, your heart rate is 140 beats per m inute. (A six-seconds count is used because your
heart rate w ill drop rapidly w hen you stop exercising.)
A djust the intensity of your exercise until your
heart rate is at the proper level.

7. CONDITIONING GUIDELINES
H ow you begin your exercise program depends on your physical condition. If you have been inactive for several years, or
are severely overw eight, you m ust start slow ly and increase your tim e on the equipm ent; a few m inutes per w orkout.
Initially, you m ay be able to exercise only for a few m inutes in your target zone, how ever, your aerobic tness w ill im prove
over the next six to eight w eeks. D ont be discouraged if it takes longer. Its im portant to w ork at your ow n pace. U lti-
m ately, youll be able to exercise continuously for 30 m inutes. The better your aerobic tness, the harder you w ill have to
w ork to stay in your target zone. Please rem em ber these essentials :
H ave your doctor review your training and diet program s to advise you of a w orkout routine you should adopt.
Begin your training program slow ly w ith realistic goals that have been set by you and your doctor.
M onitor your pulse frequently. Establish your target heart rate based on your age and condition.
Set up your equipm ent on a at, even surface at least 3 feet from w alls and furniture.

8. WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
Each w orkout should include the follow ing three parts:

perature, heart rate, and circulation in preparation for exercise.
Training zone exercise, consisting of 20 to 30 m inutes of exercising w ith your heart rate in your training zone. (N ote:
D uring the rst few w eeks of your exercise program , do not keep your heart rate in your training zone for longer than
20 m inutes.)
A cool-dow n, w ith 5 to 10 m inutes of stretching. This w ill increase the exibility of your m uscles and w ill help to prevent
post-exercise problem s.
