I. Before starting the lesson, distribute the Pacific Islands Geography Handout.

Read the
instructions out loud to the class. Have the students complete the activity. Collect the handouts.
Later, record the results on the Pacific Islands Data Entry Form.
II. Review the students knowledge of the continents by pointing them on a wall map and asking
the students to call out the continents names. Repeat the exercise for oceans.
III. Ask the students to identify where on the wall map the Pacific Islands are located.
a. If the students are unable to do so, ask the students to think about what the word
Pacific means. Repeat the same exercise with the word Islands. Then, ask the
students to think about the words Pacific and Islands together. Point out the fact that
both words are capitalized. Ask the students to think about why this might be the case.
b. Once the students have a grasp on the concept, ask them again where on the wall map
the Pacific Islands are located. Allow a student to come to the world map and point out
their answer. Ask the class if that answer is correct. If so, ask why to reinforce the
concept. If not, ask why not. Then, call upon another student and repeat the exercise.
IV. Distribute the World Geography Handout and have the students complete the activity. When
finished, ask the students to identify where on the wall map each of the continents, oceans, and
mystery locations are located. (Note: The Caribbean is a bonus question.)
V. Distribute the Pacific Islands Geography Handout II. Ask the students to look at the handout.
Explain to the students that there are many countries in the Pacific Islands region. Name a few
(e.g., Tonga). Show the students where these are located on the handout and on the wall map.
Have the students complete Pacific Islands Geography Handout II.
VI. Ask the students if the map in the Pacific Islands Geography Handout II looks different than the
map in the World Geography Handout. Discuss why.
VII. Point to and name the following countries on the wall map: Russia, Canada, China, United
States, Brazil, Australia, and India. Ask: What is something that Russia, Canada, China, United
States, Brazil, Australia, and India all have in common? Write down their answers and discuss.
VIII. Point to and name the following countries on the wall map: Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu,
and Nauru. Ask: What is something that Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Nauru all have
in common? Write down their answers and discuss.
IX. Ask the students to consider their answers to the questions in VII and VIII. Then, ask: What is
something that is different between Russia, Canada, China, United States, Brazil, Australia, and
India (pointing to each) and Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Nauru (pointing to each)?
Write down their answers and discuss.
