Letter from the Program Director
Greetings
from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the April issue of Energy Magazine!
This issues theme is about the PRACTICE of HT. We have a
rich variety of articles related to this topic, including how HTP is
moving into the future at a higher professional level in order to
open more doors for our practitioners in the world of healthcare.
You wont want to miss reading about national accreditation; our
new mentorship course and Qualied Mentor policy; how upper
level HTP courses support the student in her/his professional
growth; HTPs listing of practitioner tools; our Smart Start social
networking program; news about the growing benets of our
HT Professional Association; developing the Ying Yang of your
practice; and the importance of self care for the practitioner.
In reecting on my own practice of Healing Touch, I am remind-
ed of the personal and spiritual blessings I feel I receive during
what Jean Watson RN, PhD, refers to as the caring moment.
In my own words, this is when two peoples heart energies
come together in an experience of sacred space which opens
the doors toward mind-body-spirit healing of both practitioner
and client.
Over the last week in practicing HT, two of my sessions took
place in hospitals - one for a young, chronically ill regular client
with cerebral palsy, and the other for someone who just exited
the recovery room from knee surgery. I provided another treat-
ment in my home ofce for someone with a fresh broken heart
related to a separating romantic relationship. The other two
sessions were long distance; one for someone preparing for a
scary medical procedure and the other for a young mother with
advanced metastatic cancertruly the stuff of life. The woman
who received knee surgery just reported to me today that her
surgeon told her she was already two weeks ahead of the aver-
age post-operative knee surgery patient. Yipeee! I know many
of you who have taken the practice of HT into your heart
and soul know what an honor it feels like to help create sacred
space for people who are experiencing so many and diverse life
situations that can benet from intentional healing energy. What
a privilege to be a holy witness to someone elses signicant life
events and to be able to hold space for them
While I embrace my role as Program Director and am honored
to serve in a leadership role, I know that it is my personal prac-
tice of Healing Touch that keeps me grounded in my adminis-
trative and teaching roles. Each time I am with someone who
opens her/himself to HT in a session with me, I never know
what is going to happen. Occasionally the results are dramatic
and exciting, but more often, the shifts are subtle and sweet,
often with the client or myself not quite able to put into words
the peace, healing or energetic changes that were perceived at
some indescribable level.
Lastly, I encourage you to do the work of self care, of honor-
ing, respecting and loving yourself. As you attend to your own
healing, you will be a more nely tuned instrument of healing for
others and all the healing we do will naturally ripple out into
our world with visible and invisible blessings.
Joyfully,
Cynthia

Kennon S. Shea and Associates has part-
nered with the Healing Touch Program to offer
a multi level Certication to caregivers and license profession-
als. Our rst class graduated 18 students (pictured above) with
different backgrounds from housekeeping, laundry, nursing
assistants, license nurses, an administrator, a physical therapist
and an acupuncturist.
Sandra Lourido is the Director of Staff Development for Kennon
S Shea and she wants to be a leader in bringing HT to the long
term health care facilities. Kathy Allan, RN, HTCP/I, (HTP certi-

classes in Levels 1, 2 and 3.
Additionally, Kathy is scheduled to speak at the annual confer-
ence of the Directors of Staff Development for the California
Long Term Health Care Facilities in Palm Springs in April.
Congratulations to Mary Duennes, HTCP/I
She has been chosen to receive one of the

Healing Touch Program Accreditation Update
The work towards making Healing Touch Program an accred-
ited course of study is underway and going strong. Currently,
HTP is working with consultants to nalize the schedule to cre-
ate the test that will become a part of the certication process.
We have also been busy making upgrades to several policies
and procedures. The kinds of changes we need to make result
in modications of program policies and other requirements. Be
sure to watch communications and check the HTP website for
updates regularly as we grow in this process.
We would like to thank those who have generously donated
either their time, effort, or both in making this possible. HTP
is proud to be able to raise the standard for everyone who
has worked hard to make Healing Touch part of their profes-
sional career.
If you would like to support the effort to help Healing Touch
Program achieve accreditation, please consider donating or
volunteering simply Click Here for more information.

A Healing Touch Prayer
In honor of the Divine, both without and within,
We open our souls to the healing power of the Universe.
We allow this loving, healing energy to flow to
and thru us and to bathe our body, mind and
spirit in light and love.
In gratitude we accept this gift as
it enters each area of our bodies
and our lives that need this extra
grace and positive, healing energy.
We send love and blessings to the
Universe and beyond; and we accept
them in return.

In my previous profession proposal develop-
ment and writingevaluation was a necessary
part of every grant and every program. Evalu-
ation told us what worked and what didnt and
how we could improve. I wanted this same information
from the 100 sessions I documented in preparation for Level 5.
So I developed a brief evaluation form to elicit input from clients
who saw me for three to ve sessions. I offered ve free ses-
sions in exchange for completing the evaluation. When clients
completed treatment they were asked to rate and comment on
their results. Did they get the outcomes they wanted? Were
there unexpected benets? Was the setting conducive to treat-
ment? (I have a home/ofce and dogs.) Did I talk too much?
Were the suggestions for self-care helpful? I learned a lot
during those one hundred sessions and Im still learning! The
highlights are below.
It isnt about me.
My rst clients sat through a long explanation of my background
and how I came to Healing Touch (HT). I felt I had to explain why
I thought I could do energy treatments when my doctorate and
career was in education. Eventually I realized my clients didnt
care where Id been or what Id done. Results were what they
cared about.
Clients tell me what they want me to know.
I struggled with the forms and ratings. Was I really going to ask
people if they were constipated? I certainly couldnt counsel
anyone on spiritual well-being. So could I ask them to rate theirs
on a scale of 1 to 10? I nally accepted that their ratings raised
issues for them to consider - not me. I instructed my clients
to answer only the questions they were comfortable answer-
ing. Some clients provided no information and HT still worked.
When talk edged into the last half-hour of the appointment, I put
the client on the table, ready or not.
The right client nds the right practitioner.
As clients conded in me, I questioned my ability to adequate-
ly serve them. I learned that the clients who needed what I
had to offer were the ones who came to my door. Conversely,
the clients who came to me were the ones from whom I
needed to learn.
The magic happens on the table.
When people struggled with situations I had faced, I got hooked!
I gave advice. I tried to solve their problems. I wavered on the
line between intake, intuition, and counseling. I had time issues.
How much intake was enough? How much was too much? With
experience, I learned to talk less and listen more; to ask more
questions and give fewer answers.
There are always outcomes.
The mandate to be detached from outcomes seemed impossi-
ble. If clients didnt get better, they wouldnt come back! On the
evaluation, a few clients said the treatments had 25% or less
success in addressing the issue about which they were con-
cerned. However, those same clients said the process was still
worthwhile and they would do it again. All clients experienced
unanticipated benets. I am thrilled when people experience

Taught Me

What My Clients Taught Me
instant results. However, I accept that people also heal in ways
not obvious to me. Most importantly, I am not responsible for
anyones healing. All healing is truly self-healing.
Accept what happens.
As my Higher Sensory Perception developed, I thought I was
imagining things or making them up. In my minds eye, I saw
Archangel Michael holding and comforting some clients. Occa-
sionally, my intuitive self saw and heard people from the clients
life apologizing, explaining, comforting. Sometimes I shared
words from these scenes and clients conrmed their authentic-
ity. (My mentor assured me these experiences were blessings,
not signs of mental instability.)
My experience isnt the clients experience.
When I became distracted during a session, I worried the
treatment wouldnt work. When my experience doing HT was
wonderful; I assumed the client also had a wonderful experi-
ence. Not true. The clients experience was theirs - and mine
was mine.
Scope of practice is important.
I viewed clients as peers working collaboratively on their self-
identied needs. This did not give me the right to recommend
supplements, suggest ways of dealing with difcult people, or
advise them on career strategies. Referrals to other profession-
als helped me remain within my scope of practice.
Healing Touch works.
My clients taught me that HT can relieve pain and alleviate
depression and anxiety. During an HT session, people often ac-
cess deep feelings and integrate intellectual insights. Inner com-
munication may open to resolve emotional and spiritual issues.
Clients often feel cradled in the love of the universe. Routinely,
clients report feeling calm, a deep relaxation, and peacefulness.
I am now an HT Certied Practitioner with a private practice. I
continue to stand in awe of my clients strength of spirit, inter-
nal resources, and personal wisdom. Although I no longer ask
clients to complete a formal evaluation, I continue to learn and
grow from my experiences with them. I am deeply grateful for
my wonderful teachers that grace me with their presence as
my clients.

How to use Sound in Healing /so the Choice for Joy is Spontaneous
Arden Wilken, BA in Music Theory, Co-Founder INNER SOUND- sound therapy
Friday, August 6th 2:00 - 3:30pm
The sound that is the most healing is our own sound (when correctly produced). We cannot be in the joy of our
lifes journey nor steer it from the heart without the capacity to direct our sound inward or outward in free fow
when we choose. This presentation is both experiential and informational, including simple, specifc exercises to
create more space in the body and energy feld so the choice for joy is spontaneous.
Arden is co-founder of Inner Sound (1978), an original system of sound therapy and therapeu-
tic music for the expression and integration of the emotions. She has a discography of 25 CDs,
each having a specifc theme or focus, in order to help the individual achieve their healing goals
through unblocking the connective tissue through sound. She is also trained in body work. Ar-

Many of us who are drawn to the profession of
Healing Touch have well developed right brains (our
yin side) - we are creative, playful, spiritual, intui-
tive. These qualities allow us to be very effective
at administering a Healing Touch treatment. But it
takes more than a right brain approach to manifest a
thriving Healing Touch practice. There is a business
structure and a plan behind every practice that sur-
vives and thrives. Often this requires a practitioner
to cultivate growth and development of the left brain
(our Yang side) - that aspect of our self that under-
stands the business structure and nancial aspects
of business.
I often say I would do my work even if I never got paid, if I could
afford to live. It is true that Healing Touch has become a way of
life and I will likely do Healing Touch in one form or another for
the rest of my days. But what I have also come to know and
appreciate about myself is that I really love abundance and
nancial freedom! It is really fun to make money doing what I
love. Passionate energy, by Law of Attraction, draws to us that
which energizes us. Because I love to do Healing Touch and
feel excited about opportunities to share HT, many opportuni-
ties come my way to do this work. Because I love the thrill of
supporting myself abundantly, I also attract plenty of people
happy to pay for a treatment.
I regularly challenge myself to think bigger, which for me feels
like a yang development of my mind. Financial abundance really
allows for some incredible experiences for myself and my chil-
dren. The experiences I desire - create the passionate energy
within me. I also love the feeling of having plenty to share when
I feel moved to support a cause or help someone. I believe in
the Law of Supply and Demand. Supply ows as demand is
created. Its like the old saying, If we waited until we could af-
ford kids, wed never have them. Of course we wouldnt! Why
would the supply to support children ow in if there are no chil-
dren there? We havent yet created the demand.
You can create the demand for your Healing Touch practice by
committing to what you desire and taking steps in that direction.
Then the supply will be there if you take steps forward with
trust and commitment. Share your wealth regularly and more
will ow! Get excited about your Healing Touch practice and
take steps in that direction and it will ow. It is important to get
clear on what you want and stay focused. Too often I see practi-
tioners bounce all over the place in the direction they want to go
with their Healing Touch practice. Energy is owing for them, but
in exactly the way they have created the demand- in a million
different directions with not enough energy owing in one place
to launch anything. So do what you need to do to get clear.
Maybe schedule an appointment with a life coach to help you
get clear. Do some journaling and envision your ideal practice,
dreaming of it with the mentality that there are no limits. Study
the habits of others who are thriving with their practice. Sur-
round yourself with positive people and avoid situations that feel
negative or draining.
One tool you can use is called a Manifestation Box. Decorate
(or not!) a shoe box or other box with a lid. Place within it pieces
of paper that list what it is you are desiring to manifest, with one
piece of paper for each item. Remember to keep challenging
yourself to think, If there were no limits (which there arent un-
less we self impost them!), what qualities would I desire to have
as part of my Healing Touch practice? Then write them in pres-
ent tense as if you already have them. I often will write it like
this: Thank you for the perfect _______(ll in the blank with
whatever it is). You can also cut out images from a magazine
that represent what you are desiring to manifest and put those
in the box. After awhile I created a Manifested Box and I move
the sheets of paper or images over into the manifested box
when my intentions come to fruition. The manifested box has
given me a very visual reminder of how powerfully and rapidly
by Lauri Pointer, BA, HTCP/I

Cultivating the Yang of Your Business Mind
we can manifest when we are clear and focused and when
we release attachment to the outcome. The more I trust the
process, the easier it is to manifest.
Another important item is to hire a good accountant to help you
know how to structure your business and what things are tax
deductible. Check to see if your town offers a start up class for
small businesses through your local Chamber of Commerce or
Small Business Development Center. Even if you have been in
practice for a while, it wouldnt hurt to attend a class like that to
rene the way you are doing things. You will likely pick up some
new ideas. Maybe you want to hire a bookkeeper to help you
get set up with a bookkeeping system that works well for you
personally. Dont hesitate to hire others to help you with areas
you dont know how to do or that you dont like to do. It will be
well worth it in the long run. I found that once I hired someone
to do the things that felt energy draining to me, it freed up more
of my energy to do the work I LOVE. I had new clients calling
right away after I hired someone else to do my bookkeeping.
Any time we can get the energy feel of being where we want
to be, all that we need to get there will ow to us with effortless
ease. I used to keenly observe other women who I perceived to
be very successful business women. I would think of stepping
into their shoes for a bit, carry myself the way they do, imag-
ing how it would be to think and act like a successful business
woman who just trusted in the ow. Pretty soon, I realized I am
a successful business woman with my own style and my own
are! The phrase fake it til you make it is really great manifes-
tation advice!
Finally, lets take a look at condence and enthusiasm. If you
believe in yourself, others will too! What do you need to do to
increase your condence? Do you need to clear limiting beliefs
through journaling? Get more experience doing HT? Take more
classes? Review your Healing Touch notebooks? Do whatever
it takes to increase your own condence in your work.
And enthusiasm is contagious!
The root of the word enthusiasm is entheos. It literally means
God Within. When you feel enthusiastic about your dreams,
it means that God is speaking through you and saying yes
to your goals. The feeling of enthusiasm is one of the ways
intuition speaks to us. Just ask, What makes me happy, lls me
with joy, or thrills me with excitement? If you have those feel-
ings about anything at all in your life, that is part of your guid-
ance system telling you what to do.
-Lynn Robinson, Divine Intuition
Wake up each day and ask higher power, What do you need
me to know today? As you receive guidance, act on it! Even if
you just do three action steps per day, soon you will nd your-
self in a thriving practice of your dreams with your yin and yang
working together to support you in sharing your gift of Healing
Touch with the world.

This is a question you need to be asking your-
self if you are seeing clients -- as a Level 3 or
higher student, a practitioner with a private prac-
tice, an instructor, or a volunteer.
In the eld of Energy Medicine the likelihood of having a claim
is rare due to the non-invasive nature of our practice and the
fact that we do not medically diagnose or prescribe to our
clients. Because of this, the annual cost of coverage for liability
insurance is quite low - starting at $115 for students and $140
for practitioners.
Even when you do your absolute best work, theres always
some risk that someone with whom you interact will be dissatis-
ed and any dissatised client or the clients family could le a
claim against you. Even if you are not at fault, without Profes-
sional Liability insurance, you would have to pay for your own
legal defense and any potential settlement costs.
One of the most common types of lawsuits brought against
independent therapists deals with negligence in the perfor-
mance of professional duties. These types of suits seek dam-
ages sustained when you fail to perform your job according to
established standards of conduct for your eld. The costs of a
legal defense, not to mention a settlement, can be devastating
in such cases.
Even if you work for someone else, your employers Profession-
al Liability coverage may not be enough to protect you in the
event of a lawsuit. Ultimately, maintaining Professional Liability
insurance is the responsible thing to do.
There are many important reasons why it is recommended that
all energy healers students, practitioners, instructors and
volunteers - carry Liability Insurance, here are some to consider:
Most employer-provided coverage does not cover you when
you perform outside your job description or outside your work-
place, nor does it cover a private practice.
Whenever you practice you are exposed to a negligent
claim, even if you are employed, therefore your assets are ex-
posed. You may not have assets presently but since malpractice
suits generally take years to settle your future assets could be
at risk of being used to satisfy a judgment. Having liability insur-
ance coverage protects you from that exposure.
When you carry liability insurance, you are legally protected
if your client slips and falls whether that might be when they are
getting off the treatment table or walking around in your envi-
ronment.
If you did have a lawsuit fled against you, it must be defend-
ed and the costs to defend yourself could be huge. Having pro-
fessional liability insurance protects you from nancial hardship,
the insurance company would investigate and provide defense.
Do I need to have Liability Insurance
for my Healing Touch
(or Energy Medicine) Practice?

Do I need Liability Insurance
With liability insurance protection you are covered whether
practicing in your home, in an ofce, on a street corner, while
traveling and/or when volunteering. This is a relief from worry
and provides a tremendous sense of comfort that is well worth
the premium.
There could be a client who decides some time in the future
that you did not render professional services of the type you de-
scribed and they bring a claim but you no longer are practicing
and have let your liability insurance expire. That would not be a
problem if you had coverage at the time you treated that client
as the policy HTPA offers will defend that type of scenario.
Often if you are practicing in a volunteer capacity or if you
rent treatment space outside of your home you are required to
show that you carry liability insurance.
If you are an instructor, liability insurance will protect you
from accidents happening in your classroom. Often facilities
where you hold your classes will require that you have this
insurance.
Just as it makes sense for you to insure your automobile
but rarely do you need to use it, the same is true of your liveli-
hood better to protect yourself against the possibility of costly
expenses associated with defending claims or court cases.
In addition to the above reasons, carrying liability insurance
is yet another way to show that your Healing Touch practice
is legitimate and professional. Clients and institutes will often
view the fact that you have insurance as a sign that you are a
responsible professional.
Bottom line when you have professional and general liability
insurance you are free to provide your services, teach, make
recoomendations, volunteer whenever/wherever knowing that
you and your interests are protected. To learn more Click here

What an amazing time to be living! Healing Touch
Program has come through some of the toughest
years since Janet Mentgen took the risk to establish
our discipline in the 1980s. Back then, for many of
you, things were far from easy - having to deal with
skeptics, culture shock and conservatism in relation-
ship to our energy work callings. We did not seem to
really t anywhere. However, as hands-on healers, we
belong aligned with health care. Not just anyone can
break into that eld - especially from the outside. With
great wisdom, intuition and safety in numbers, Janet
aligned Healing Touch with nursing. We are proud of
this and highly value our health care connections.
Our health care alignment is so valuable that our next step in
this direction is national accreditation, which is being undertaken
with gusto, knowing that it will create changes in the eld of
energy medicine and the business of Healing Touch. I know that
many of us automatically shy away from change which is hu-
man nature. Believe me when I tell you that even the most dedi-
cated to this project have days when we want to run in the other
direction! Why is HTP doing this? The answer is pure and simple
- it is for our practitioners to achieve their rightful recognition.
In the eld of education, national accreditation is for the educa-
tional provider, the school or educational institution. Yes, it may
help you to say, I got my Masters degree from U of M, but it
is all about the school being accredited, not the student. Health
care is different. In health care, when the discipline is accred-
ited it reects on the quality and standard of that disciplines
practitioner. When HTP is accredited it means something to the
program, of course. However, the real value comes to you, the
practitioner. Now you will be in demand because you reect the
increased status of HTP. Now health care facilities, insurance
companies and clients want practitioners from a nationally ac-
credited program in the form of an individual -- you.
You will see many changes in the next one to two years. You will
see improved standards, gaps in education being lled,
changes in business practices and more involvement from
volunteers. I cannot stress enough where the benets of this lie.
They lie with energy medicine students to be able to train in
a viable and growing eld. But above all, they lie with you, the
practitioner.
Ill describe two examples of changes in HTP. First, we have a
new standard for mentors, the Qualied Mentor (QM). What is
a QM? This is a Healing Touch Certied Practitioner (HTCP)
who is dedicated to future practitioners -- interested in creating
and being the most highly trained and effective representatives
of HT. This is also someone, by virtue of this focus, dedicated
to improving the eld of energy medicine. Yes, this includes our
HTP Instructors (for they are all HTCPs). It is hoped that many, if
not all, of our instructors will become QMs. But through this new
QM status, we honor those practitioners who have been mentor-
ing as non-nurses in a nursing aligned discipline. With the QM
designation we equalize our pool of mentors and eliminate the
nurse requirement. (CLICK HERE for more information on the
change.) A QM is an HTCP who stays current with the HTP level
4/5 homework, curriculum and certication requirements, is ac-
tive in a practice and interested in service to our community.
Secondly, we have a new, and long time coming, tele-course for
training mentors, the HTP Mentor Training Course. This 27-hour
CE Advanced Practice course lls a void that has existed in our
educational program, by taking practitioners and helping them
to develop into well rounded, effective mentors for our students.
Anyone who is an HTCP can mentor. This course offers men-
tors the training to meet and uphold the standard of QM. (LINK
here to info on the course.)
It is very important to note that although these changes may
look daunting to you at rst,we are not changing the Healing
Touch Program. Our twenty-one year old core curriculum
remains the same quality program. We are improving what
the Healing Touch Program offers. If we are to fully align
with health care as the energy medicine professionals we are,
it is necessary to make these changes. Transition will be made
easier by our community being fully involved and educated to

Our HT community has enthusiastically said, YES to national
accreditation in health care. Why? It is primarily for you, our
practitioners, that we undertake this professional growth. Heal-
ing Touch Program IS our practitioners! A strong, viable, health
care-aligned and nationally accredited discipline supports your
being the best representative of healing in the world. What we

There are many things to consider when creating a
healing practice. The practice needs to t with your
personality, your lifestyle, your values. Rushing into a
practice is often costly and unsuccessful. Spend the
necessary time imaging how your practice is to look.
Work your plan on paper many times before making
any nancial investment. Set your goals and plans
with an orientation to the future. Think about the
practice in terms of the rst year and years to come.
DEFINITION OF PRACTICE
A descriptive denition of the practice is a rst step. Some types
of practice include:
private practice
practice within a work setting - hospital, clinic
practice with family or friends
volunteer practice - hospice, cancer, A.I.D.S.
church or ministry practice - parish nurse
educational practice - teaching
DEVELOP A VISION OF YOUR PRACTICE
Being able to image your practice is helpful. Let it develop like
a dream or visualization. Examine all aspects of the image and
see yourself practicing successfully in the space.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Identify the people you are going to serve in your practice. What
is the scope of the practice? Do you have a special interest in a
particular group of people or type of disease? Are you bringing
to the practice your own special expertise or training? Will you
be combining skills such as massage and Healing Touch?
PARAMETERS OF THE PRACTICE
What kind of practice setting do you need for the practice? Is
the practice to be held in a home, private ofce, clinic, hospi-
tal, the church, the clients home, or other places? Where is
the practice located, such as in a city, rural area or near those
you want as clients? How easy will it be for the people to nd?
What are the transportation supports for the people who want
to come? Do you need a handicapped equipped facility for the
clients? Consider the type of practice your want, such as sole
proprietor, a partnership, a corporation. A business plan may be
appropriate to help make these decisions. Legal advice may be
helpful along with accounting. Consider your tax liabilities and
how you are going to handle them. What are the nancial sup-
ports and needs? Identify these in the beginning with a budget
plan. What are your costs of doing business and what are your
income potentials? Are you going to work full or part time in
your business and what are your sources of income. Be sure
to have a sound nancial plan in place before spending any
money on the business start up.
TOOLS NEEDED FOR PRACTICE
To start a practice, there are several other items that you
will need:
Safe private location
Massage table
Linens, blankets and covers, pillows
Phone services
Offce furniture
Decorations
Insurance

a Healing Practice

Creating a Healing Practice
MARKETING PLANS
Consider how you are going to let people know about
your work and location of the practice. You will need
a brochure, business cards and a way to announce
your practice. Offer to give talks to small groups for
educational purposes. Establish your fee for service
and let people know before any treatment work is
done. People need to know the value of what you do
and how it could help them. Network within your com-
munity to let people know about Healing Touch. You
may have to spend some time educating people about
Healing Touch and subtle energy therapy. Have some
articles and written information available for distribu-
tion. Newspaper publicity about your practice is always
helpful. Word of mouth from satised clients is by far
the best source of spreading the information about your
work. Talking directly to people is also very helpful as it
adds the personal touch and invites them to participate.
Also network with other health professionals who can
be a referral source. Join in a group of other profession-
als or create a group to help support the efforts in your
community.
About the author:
Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, HNC, HTCP/I, founder of
Healing Touch, was an energetically sensitive nurse.
Her drive was to deepen and expand the connection
between nurses and their patients. She saw the posi-
tive effect of touch while using various energy tech-
niques and modalities. Janet began using her energy
based healing skills in 1980. In 1989, Janet formally
created Healing Touch as an energy medicine program.
Her article on Creating a Healing Practice was pub-
lished in the 2006 Level 4/5 notebook. We thought
Janets original words would be appropriate for this
issue which focuses on building your practice. Janet
transitioned on September 15, 2005.

fessional practice challenges that are arising out of
your desire to change from the job you dislike to the
Healing Touch work you love? Do YOU feel like you
are a lone ranger, bringing new health and healing
concepts to your community? Are you in need of a
professional boost an alignment with others who
believe what you believe? Is starting a small busi-
ness practice a vision you would like to manifest?
Would you (as an instructor or coordinator) like to in-
crease the number and/or size of your Healing Touch
classes? Are you practicing without the protection of

development of your profession. As membership grows so too
does increased power for HTPA to represent your requests both
internally and externally in the larger arena of Energy Medicine
and Integrative Health Care.

questioned by the scientic community and we have conrmed
our place in the new medical model of Integrative Health Care.

Associations and Organizations that teach and support their

3) Members are eligible for Professional and General
Liability Insurance
HTPA is one of the few avenues to subscribe to Liability Insur-
ance through an energy-based program. The advantage of
subscribing through HTPA is that the Liability Insurance has
been specically tailored for energy practice and our customer
service staff understands your specic needs. Currently all
members are eligible to apply for HTPAs Liability Insurance
Program. If seeking coverage for Healing Touch the requirement
is having successfully completed Level 3 or above but there is
also coverage for most of the Subtle Energy and Energy Medi-
cine modalities that meet HTPAs training guidelines. Therefore,
when application is made you list all of the modalities you prac-
tice and wish to have covered, submitted with proof of training
and your application will be reviewed for acceptance. CLICK

4) HTPA members have a Member Only Message
Board/Blog
The advantage of the Member Only communication forum is
that you can start a discussion or participate in an on-going
discussion that is personal about your practice and have
replies to it by others in your professional practice without the
general public being exposed to the information. Often practice
questions come up and here is the perfect place to get an-
swers from your peers. Since Healing Touch has many different
applications, many experiences can be shared on the Message/
Forum Board without concern of scrutiny or judgment by a pub-
lic that might think you are weird or out of your mind!

Would you like to have a successful energy
therapy practice? A fullling practice that en-
ables you to help other people while meeting
your nancial needs?
You can do it, but it may require you to think a little differently
than you have been thinking in the past. My name is Greg
Pitstick, and I have been helping businesses make more money
for over 20 years. My clients have included really big compa-
nies like Proctor & Gamble and professionals like Healing Touch
practitioners.
There are a lot of things you have to worry about to successful-
ly market your products and services, but over the years I have
found one secret that all successful businesses understand. If
you dont get this secret right, then you wont have much of a
business to worry about!
Number One Secret Know Thy Customer/Client
and Give Them What They Want
There is an old saying: You can be a millionaire if you just gure out
what people want and give it to them. Sounds easy enough, right?
The mistake most businesses make (big and small) is thinking up
a new product or service and then trying to sell it. In fact, this may
be the quickest way to fail in business. You see, it does not matter
how much you like your products or services, it only matters what
your target customer wants and is willing to pay for.
In the developed world almost everyone has all the food and shelter
they need. Very few people have any true needs most people
only have wants, desires and fears. People buy services based on
emotion, not fact. They want to eliminate pain, avoid fear or create
an easier world for themselves. So your job is to determine what
they want and give it to them.
It is important to understand that you need to determine what they
want, not what they need. There is a difference. You know what
they need, but they will only pay for what they want. An overweight
person needs to eat less and exercise more - but they will not buy
an eat less, work more program. They want a quick x, a program
that is easy to follow, or prepared foods that make the process easy.
For example, if you offer Healing Touch services and you notice
most of your client base has cancer; you should craft your services
around Relieving Cancer Pain or How to regain control when you
have cancer. All you are doing is offering the result your target
client really wants.
We are hit with over 3,000 marketing messages every day. It is the
job of our subconscious mind to block out the ads that do nothing
for us. Your subconscious mind is tuned into the radio station WIFM
(Whats In It For Me). The subconscious blocks the marketing
messages in which it is not interested and it calls your attention to
those things it thinks you need to know.
For example, have you ever noticed that when you buy a new car
suddenly you see that exact same car everywhere? Your new car
is important to you so your subconscious mind is tuned into pick-
ing out your car and bringing it to your attention.
To grow your business, you need to attract clients. To attract new
clients, you need to tune your services and your marketing mes-
sages into the WIFM station to which your clients are listening. To
do this, youre going to have to dene some things.
First, you need to understand who your target clients are and what
they really want. Second, youre going to have to market your
services in a way that gets attention and makes people say WOW.
Who is your target client and what do they really
want?
You want to connect your marketing messages with the conver-
sation going on in your target clients mind. The only way you
can do this is to really understand who your target client is in

Your Energy Therapy Practice

Biggest Secret ...
great depth, all the way to their feelings and desires, how they
dress, and how they want others to see them.
At this point, its best if you try to describe a single person that
you can picture in your mind. You can even name them. Some
nd it helpful to picture a particular character from a TV show or
movie, or from someone they have known in the past that has
the exact characteristics for which they are looking.
Having a well dened target client will enable you to:
Position yourself as the expert for their problems
Easily justify the price you charge
Focus more on the needs and interests of your clients
Maintain a concentrated marketing focus instead of diluting
your efforts to meet every need of every client and, in the
end, satisfying no one
Initially, you may worry that you will lose business because you
are dening your target too narrowly. However, if you focus on
catering to a specic type of client, and if you place all your
marketing efforts there, you will soon reap the rewards of the
clients who ock to you because you have what they want. In
addition, you will be able to do so at a much lower cost than try-
ing to cater to a broader customer base.
Over time you will also nd your clients will recommend you to
the people they know. Birds of a feather ock together -- your
customer will know others who also need your services.
Dening your target customer isnt always easy - but take a
stab at, and then build on your results.
Second, What Is Your Wow Factor
When you meet someone for the rst time, what do you say
when they ask what you do? Do you say I practice Healing
Touch or do you say I help cancer patients recover faster?
You need a good short introduction that makes your target
client ask, Wow how do you do that? Building a good short
introduction takes some effort, but it is absolutely worth it
because of the added advantage you will have in the market.
You are going to use your short introduction throughout all your
marketing -- on Facebook, LinkedIn, in your blog, and of course,
when networking with others.
It is the wow factor that cuts through the clutter and gets noticed
in the vast sea of Internet advertising and marketing messages.
A good short introduction is:
Ten or fewer words
Not confusingit stands alone
Does not require someone to be an expert in your feld to
understand it
Makes your target client ask, Wow, how do you do that?
Once you have developed your short introduction, you need to
create a short story or elevator speech to follow it up.
Imagine getting in an elevator and someone asks what you do,
and you respond with your short introduction. They say, How
do you do that? Now what do you say?
Think of a short story you can quickly tell someone in about 30
to 60 secondsthe length of an elevator ride. This is a short
story about you, as well as, how you help your clients. The story
should be easy to remember and repeat. It can be a story about
one of your clients who you helped or it can be a personal story
about why you do what you do. You want your short story to
be genuine and from the heart. Tell your story to some of your
friends and get their input. They may bring up points about you
that you may have overlooked.
Use your short story to complete your bio on Facebook, Linke-
dIn, and other social networking sites. Add your short story to
your brochure and other marketing material.
Now you know the biggest secret for growing a successful prac-
tice. One word of caution, dont expect to get your target client
and marketing messages done in an hour. You will need to try
them out and rene them over time. Once you get it right, you

About the author:
During a career spanning 16 years and
4 contentents, Greg Pitstick brought the
best, money making ideas to compa-
nies around the world. Ideas on how to
trounce the competition using the best of
technology combined with the best busi-
ness ideas.
After being a globe trotting idea entrepreneur
for 16 years, I hung it up in 2004 to spend
time with my growing family four kids and a
fantastic wife. But the lure of developing and
sharing new money making ideas could not
be put to rest. The growth of social network-
ing and the internet called me back to help
professionals learn how to harness the new
wave of technology. Working with Bill, we
created the Smart Entrepreneurs Guide To
Social Networking. It is a complete strategy on
how to get more customers without spending
a ton of cash
Gregs irreverent, somewhat crazy style brings
excitement into LGM3. Never boring, Greg is
committed to bringing the best training and
goal oriented development to other profession-
als. As a professional speaker, Greg not only
provides excellent training, but he also moti-
vates others to get up and change their world.

Learn about what HTP offers at the Level 4
and 5 classes...
Overview: Healing Touch Programs standardized curriculum
has been enhanced on all ve levels of the core curriculum over
the last several years, particularly with the nal two courses,
Levels 4 and 5. With our twenty-one year American Holistic
Nurses Association endorsement status and many years of
providing continuing education contact hours for nurses and
massage therapists, HTP is moving toward adding national ac-
creditation as the next gold standard for validating the profes-
sionalism of our adult education program.
Two years ago we published revised Level 4/5 curricular note-
books that have rounded out the comprehensive presentation of
articles and material to support students growth toward becom-
ing professional energy medicine practitioners. The courses,
each offering 30 continuing education contact hours, have an
additional block of time to cover topics which assure that gradu-
ates have a rm foundation in their studies as they move toward
HTP graduation and then onto international certication.
Level 4
Students who complete Level 3 have learned how to apply the
ten step Healing Touch session sequence using nearly thirty HT
methods and various sequences depending on the client. They
have learned the essentials of an ethical practice operating
within their individual scope of practice.
In Level 4, students deepen and widen their understanding
of Healing Touch as an energy therapy along with a review of
techniques/sequences, discussions about creating a profes-
sional practice, understanding detailed elements of the Code
of Ethics and Scope of Practice, and learning the case study
process by having four documented sessions with a specic
client (classmate) which includes an intake interview, full
length sessions and a discharge plan. Two nal methods of the
core curriculum are taught -- the Full Body Connection and
the Etheric Vitality Meditation. A description of homework
(growthwork) required for Level 5 and course graduation is
provided in terms of not only what is expected, but why and
how. A sample of case studies from students are presented for
review which help the Level 4 students to understand the ow
and necessity of the intake interview, the ten steps of the HT
sequence, the discharge, when to refer and how to identify and
document specic energetic patterns related to a particular client.
Traditionally, Level 4 and 5 classes, are held in a retreat center
over the course of four days. Being in a quiet environment sur-
rounded by nature, not having distractions from work or home
responsibilities, enjoying prepared meals and having a series of
days together allows Level 4 students to settle into the depths
of learning and integrating at an individual level. In addition, stu-
dents develop/deepen collegial relationships and friendships,
and have the opportunity to hear from fellow students and fac-
ulty during each of the nine blocks of time together on specic
topics related to personal and professional development as an
HT practitioner.
Level 4 is the place where students make a commitment to
themselves for a powerful year or so of learning, corresponding
to Level 5 assignments. Homework includes (1) documentation
of 100 client sessions using the ten step HT Sequence, (2) a
reading program, (3) receiving ten various holistic modalities of
the students choice, (4) selecting and working with a mentor
(HTCP) who will support and guide the apprentices progress,
(5) networking and community service, (6) presentation of a
professional prole notebook created by the student about her/
himself, and (8) writing a draft case study for presentation at
Level 5.
When a Level 4 class takes place simultaneously with a Level
5 class, some time is spent with the graduating class so that
the Level 5 students can share their personal experiences
regarding their apprenticeship year between Levels 4 and 5.
Their shared testimonials of personal and professional growth
experienced while completing the eight assignments for Level 5
universally attest to the wisdom of the assignments themselves
and how each assignment meaningfully contributed toward
growth of the student toward a professional status of energy
medicine practitioner with a specialty in Healing Touch.

HTP Level 4/5 Classes
Students participate in class meditations each day to set the
tone and intention for group learning, individual growth/healing,
and creation of friendships and collegial relationships that often
get birthed or established at Level 4.
Level 5
This nal course of the HTP core curriculum brings together
a rich culmination of all the previous courses through each
students sharing of the eight areas of homework that were
completed in preparation for Level 5. The mood we promote for
this last course is one of integration, self-direction for moving
into the future and celebration of our growth and uniqueness as
individual practitioners. In addition to sharing the experiences
of growthwork (whether the apprenticeship period took one
year or several years), students continue their learning through
deeper discussion of ethics in the practice of HT, detailed study
of fellow students case studies for renement in preparation for
the certication process, and a bonding and powerful experi-
ence of group healing. Students are prepared for the certica-
tion process - for which application may be made after success-
ful completion of all the homework for Level 5. Those who might
attend Level 5 without total completion of assignments or who
need to rene or correct one or more assignments complete an
agreement with the instructor for when and how the nal pieces
will be done so that the graduation certicate can be awarded
at a later date.
Especially fullling is the block of time when Level 5 students
meet with the group of Level 4 students (provided both are
taking place simultaneously) to share their experiences and
words of wisdom to the new HT practitioner apprentices. A true
appreciation of where they were at their Level 4 class is always
acknowledged and honored. Being able to guide those on the
path behind them is gratifying and a welcomed voice of cheer-
leading for the students embarking toward Level 5. Course
completion and graduation are celebrated in a meaningful and
honoring way for each attendee, whether s/he has successfully
completed all assignments and qualies for graduation or is at
the incomplete status.
Level 4 and 5 students often make lifelong, soulful friendships
during these classes due to the fact that HTP courses are not
just academic or technique oriented, but truly address the life of
the soul, personal growth, commitment to self-care and an abil-
ity to identify ones strengths and areas of needed growth.
Graduates of HTP are invited to add their names and a bio-
graphical sketch to the HTP Practitioner Directory, which is a
public directory that is a source of new clients nding practi-
tioners in their area. Practitioners are encouraged to become
increasingly active in the HT Professional Association (HTPA)
(LINK HERE), where their voiced can be heard in the many
areas of HT practice worldwide, nationally and locally. HTPA
hopes you will be able to participate in committee work or vol-
unteer some of your time to the growth of HT.
Once a student completes Level 3, s/he may apply for liability
insurance for ones private practice or institutional practice of-
fered through HTPA. After graduation is accomplished, the next
step and credentials are not far away -- international certica-
tion through HTPs autonomous certication body, Healing
Touch Certication (HTC). At this level of accomplishment,
more doors are opened for the HT practitioner who wants to es-
tablish an active private practice or health care facility practice
or to work toward becoming an instructor.
Many HTCPs offer to serve as helpers at Level 4/5 classes to
support the students going through their upper level course-
work. Some attend Level 5 for a day to help read the homework
brought in for course completion. There are many opportunities
to pay it forward once you receive your HTCP. We hope those of
you who are Level 1,2 and 3 students will be inspired by reading
this overview of Levels 4 and 5 and will choose to take the next
step toward your personal, professional and spiritual growth.

For the past twenty years, Healing Touch has been
the international leader in energy medicine - reach-
ing hundreds of thousands of healthcare profession-
als. This group includes nurses, physicians, and al-
lied healthcare personnel as well as family members
of loved ones in distress. The new eld of energy
psychology combines the best of Healing Touchs
energetic approaches for relieving emotional pain
and anxiety and applies them to the expanding work
of mainstream psychotherapists.
By focusing on techniques utilizing the three major components
of the human energy systemthe bioeld, the chakras, and the
meridian acupointsenergy psychology gives clinicians a wide
variety of therapeutic choices. A number of approaches resolve
emotional distress through emotional acupressure and have
evolved in the past fteen years to demonstrate exciting results.
This approach incorporates work with the meridians through
tapping or touching specic acupoints, in addition to focusing
on the bodys energy centers and the human bioeld which are
the primary focus in Healing Touch therapies.
Several concepts form the basis for the approach of energy
psychology --the scientic documentation of interactions within
the human mind and body, awareness of the meridians with Qi
ow pathways, and the recognition from positive psychology
that negative thought patterns may recreate disturbing emo-
tions in the form of looping, or repetitive thinking. One of the
leading symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD)
for example, is the reliving of traumatic events such as experi-
encing accidents, physical or sexual abuse, or war.
Stimulating specic acupressure points (no needles!) relieves
the emotional distress of past, present, or future emotional pain.
By encouraging the client to be aware of the thoughts associ-
ated with their anxiety and having the client touch the appropri-
ate treatment points along specic meridians, counselors can
facilitate relief of distressing emotions. Through many learning
trials, leading edge psychologists have arrived at numerous me-
ridian patterns, called algorithms, that can be used to alleviate
harmful, repetitive emotions. Thus, phobic responses, traumatic
experiences, love pain, and the stressors that lead to addictions
can be relieved easily in therapeutic sessions and then contin-
ued through the clients ability to apply patterns of self-care.
Another signicant discovery is observation of the effects of
psychoenergetic reversals (or unconscious objections) on hu-
man thought, emotions, and behavior. Correction for these dis-
ruptions is determined through Clinical Kinesiology also called
Muscle or Energy Testing. As clients learn patterns that put the
energy system into balance, they are better able to respond to
other psychotherapeutic interventions, such as insight therapy,
interactive imagery or the self-expressive arts.
As with Healing Touch, an additional valuable application of
energy psychology concepts is the relief of long-term, chronic
pain. As disruptions in the proper ow of energy are corrected,
clients report an increased sense of well-being, better efcacy
of their medications, increased endorphin production and sig-
nicant lessening of anxiety.
The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology
(ACEP www.energypsych.org) has been in existence for over
a decade now and was co-founded by psychologists, David
Gruder and this author. The word comprehensive is an inten-
tional choice to assure the place of chakra and bioeld work
along with numerous acupoint interventions. ACEP has grown
into a strong organization with large national and international
conferences and a carefully developed research arm. While the
research to validate the effects of energy psychology is devel-
oping gradually via peer-reviewed journals and published single
case studies, reports from clinicians treating a wide variety of
emotional issues show consistently positive, robust results.
ACEP now welcomes the interest of Healing Touch practitioners
and to strengthen these afliations, the Healing Touch Program
will have a featured booth at the next ACEP conference June

There is power in science that is unrivaled -- unless
it is by the enormous inuence spirituality has had
upon individuals, environments and nations through-
out the ages. Im sure it seemed startlingly auda-
cious 20 years ago for the International Society for
the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine
(ISSSEEM) to assert its mission using the simple
tag line, Bridging Science and Spirit. Oh, but the
landscape has changed dramatically -- whether
because accepted science has been contradicted
so many times by new ndings or because we
have actually begun to integrate spirituality, broad-
perspective thought, and methodical analysis. We,
as humans, not only need to know how the world
works, but we need to believe in what it all means
and need it to inform us in living our lives morally,
ethically, and spiritually.
We know the truth, not only by reason, but also by the
heart. Pascal
Within the naturally allied organizations of ISSSEEM and HTP,
contemporaries, researchers, healers,
teachers, and pioneers on the thought
frontier are creating the new conver-
gence culture of heart and reason,
science and spirit. We welcome Heal-
ing Touch Program as a co-sponsor
at our 20th Anniversary conference,
Evidence-based Spirituality for the
21st Century, June 25 -29 at The Wes-
tin in Westminster, Colorado. ISSSEEM
President, Charley Tart says, This con-
ference will be of interest only to those
who are going to die and want to know
what they might do in the meantime to
live a life of happiness and value.
Engage with us at ISSSEEM, check out our unprecedented
conference lineup, read more about creating a culture of con-
vergence by signing up to receive the eSEEM newsletter at
