EE560 LinearSystemsTheory
Fall2014
CourseObjective:
To provide an applied introduction to Linear Systems, a special class of systems for
which a great deal is known. Main aim is to familiarize students with some basic
mathematical concepts and analysis techniques that are uniformly used in many
disciplines like Control system, Signal processing etc.
CourseOverview

Physical

Apply various signals to
system and measure its
response.
If performance is not
satisfactory, adjust
parameters.
Trial and error methods.
Unworkable solution if
system is complex or too
expensive or too dangerous
to be experimented on.
A systemic way to study
and design physical
systems.
Analytical study of physical
systems consists of four
parts:
1. Modeling
2. Developmentof
mathematicaldescription.
3. Analysis
4. Design
CourseOverview
Physical system Vs. its model: a resistor with constant resistance is a model
obtained usually by disregarding many actual physical attributes like power
limitation etc.
A physical system may have different models. A spaceship can be modeled as a
particle, rigid body or flexible body depending on problem.
Proper modeling of a physical system is very much essential for successful design.
Physical system = a real world device or collection of such devices ; A system is a
model of a physical system.

CourseOverview
Developing models for physical systems requires knowledge of particular field in
depth. E.g. to develop transistor model requires a knowledge of quantum physics
along with proper laboratory setup for measurements etc.
Modeling problem should be studied in connection with the specific field.
In this course, we will assume that models of physical systems are available to us.

CourseOverview
Once a model is selected for a physical system, the next step is to apply various
physical laws e.g. Kirchhoffs laws to electrical systems and Newtons law to
mechanical systems, to develop mathematical equations to describe the system.
Obtained equations can be linear, nonlinear, integral, differential, difference
equations etc.
A system may have many different mathematicalequation descriptions.

CourseOverview
After a mathematical description is obtained, we carry out analyses quantitative
and/or qualitative.
In quantitative analysis, we are interested in the response of the system excited by
certain inputs.
In qualitative analysis, we are interested in the general properties of systems, such
as stability, controllability and observability. Qualitative analysis is very important
because design techniques usually evolve from this study.

Mathematicalconceptsbehindlinearsystemtheorylikelinearalgebraetc.
In many electrical engineering and computer science disciplines like signal
processing, communications theory, control systems, system identification, pattern
recognition etc., there is a common thread among all; they all involve a fair degree of
mathematical sophistication. Most of these areas share a large overlap in conceptual
content. In this part of the course, we plan to cover the underlying mathematical
concepts behind these areas from a unified point of view.
