Durga Suktam

[From Maha Narayana Upanishad]

[This is a prayer to the fire God Agni occurring in the Maha Narayana
Upanishad. Durga is used here as a word for Difficult problems in almost all
the stanzas. The salutation to Durga is gien only in the second stanza. !"ut
many people consider this as prayer to goddess Durga for remoing all
obstacles and eils.# $ hae relied on the translation of Maha Narayana
Upanishad by %wami &imalanda for ma'ing this translation.(
)ataedase sunaama soma marathee yatho nidhahadhi eda*
%a na parshadathi durgani iswa naaea sindhum durithathyagni. +
,ur oblations of %oma to the fire god*
May he* the all 'nowing one destroy all those who do not li'e us*
May that diine fire lead us out of all perils*
-i'e a captain ta'es his boat across the sea*
And also sae us from all wrongs.
Thaam agni arnaam thapasa .walanthim airochanim 'arma phaleshu
.ushtam*
Durgam deim saranamaham prapadhye* sutharasi tharase nama. /
$ ta'e refuge in the diine mother Durga0*
1ho shines li'e a fire due to her penances*
1ho resides in actions and their fruits and ma'es them effectie*
And $ salute her who helps us cross our difficulties.
0 $t could be translated as Mother of difficulties also
Agne thwam paaraya nayo asmaan swasthibhirathi durgani iswa*
2ushscha prithwi bahula na uree bhaa tho'aaya thanayaya shamyoh. 3
,h God of fire* you are worthy of praise*
4or by noel methods you help us cross*
The difficulties and ma'e us happy*
May our land in this earth become e5tensie*
May the land for growing crops become large*
And be pleased to .oin our children and*
Their children with .oy and happiness.
&ishaani no durghaa .athaeda sindhunaa naa durithathi parshi*
Agne athrian manasaa grina no asma'am bodhayithwa thanoo naam. 6

Ma'e us cross all our troubles li'e a boat*
1hich ta'es us to the other shore without problems*
,h 4ire* protect us li'e the sage Athri* who would ta'e care of us*
Mindful of our safety and our happiness.
2rithana .itham saha mana mugram agnim huema paramath sadhasthath*
%a na parshadathi durgani iswa 'shamaddheo athi durithatyagni. 7
1e ino'e the fierce 4ire God who is the leader of us all.
And who is the 'iller of all our enemies from the highest place*
To ta'e us across all difficulties and all that is perishable and protect us.
2rathnoshi'a meedyo adhareshu sanacha hota nayascha sadhsi*
%wacha agne piprayaswa asmabhyam cha soubhahya maya .aswa. 8
,h 4ire God* you are praised during sacrifices*
And always increase our happiness* and e5ist as sacrifices*
1hich are olden and those which are new*
2lease ma'e us* who are only yourself* happy*
And grant us good fortune from all our sides.
Gobhir .ushta mayu.o nishith'tham thaendra ishnor anusancharema*
Naa 'asya prushtam abhisamasaano aishnaim lo'a iha madhayantham.
