Safety Basics
Participants learn basic information about safety, including problems
with traditional safety programs:
- Why traditional programs fail
- Why workers don't like traditional audits
- Why traditional safety award programs don't work
- What current research suggest about the design of a behavior based
safety process
Morning exercise: Review the elements of their current safety efforts

DAY2
Creating the Observation Process
Based on research on behavioral safety, a safety observation process is
the basic foundation for an effective process. In this module, participants
learn:
- How to identify and describe safe behaviors
- How to involve all employees in designing safety checklists
- What options are available for the design of behavioral checklists
- How to create an observation process
- What are the different types of behavioral observation processes and
when are they appropriate

Developing Action Plans
Observation data must be used to improve safety and the observation
process. Participants learn:
- How to use data in the safety process
- How to address the most common problems in behavioral safety
processes
- How to design and coordinate support programs
- What kinds of programs other companies have tried
Morning exercise: Develop an action plan based on simulated
observation data
Safety Leadership
In this module, participants learn:
- How to involve upper management
- The things exemplary safety leaders do that ineffective leaders do not
- How to define the role of management in maintaining the safety process
- How to get management started supporting BBS
- How to prepare managers and supervisors to respond correctly when
confronted with real-time safety issues
