Match Report;
Canberra capitulation as Gold Coast record upset win 27-24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robina,QLD- With Canberra cruising into the play offs it seemed just a formality that they would come away from C-Bus Super Stadium with a solid win. However that plan quickly evaporated and before the teams went back into the sheds for halftime, Coach Nathan Richards had to evoke an even bigger problem when he benched Peter Harper for Ryan Picker.
There has been issues simmering under the surface at Canberra for some time. Harper has put up impressive numbers, the best of his career this year but so far the Kookaburra's have failed to offer an extension on this years contract. At the same time young Picker signed a new 3 year deal suggesting a change was in the wind. "It has nothing to do with the team going forward. I benched Harper because we needed a spark. I would have benched the entire team if I could have" said Richards whose move will have much bigger consequences.
The move came after Harper threw his third interception of the night. Already down 20-3 after Mitchell Gardell had caused the Canberra defence headaches with efficient passing and big play scrambling outside of the pocket. Harper on the other hand looked disinterested and so did his team. Not only did he turn the ball over but he also completed just 4 of 11 passes.
The decision to replace him with Picker had the desired effect for this game but muddied the waters going into the play offs. Pickers passes look crisp and his arm is strong but are the Kookaburra's are divided team just one week out from the post season?
The Kookaburra's rallied well and touchdowns to Rusty Pettyborne (Twice) and Zac Iosefo late on. However the Giants steadied the ship when Gardell found Tight End Pierce Mclean 30 yards deep for a score to keep them at arms length, finally winning 27-24.
