GENERAL LIBRARY

About us:

The Library’s primary mission is to serve the intellectual commons with

high-quality resources, services and gateway to information to meet the needs of
the institution’s diverse instructional research and out teach programmes.

The Library automation was a dream come true! Thanks to the UGC’s
“Colleges with Potential for Excellence” award. The Library housed in a
sprawling 32,000 sq.ft.. three storied structure with an inbuilt air–conditioned, self
contained Conference Hall, provides high quality library collection and
information services to the teaching, research and service functions of the user
community. The Library houses over 91,917 books and 52 print journals and is
also sufficiently supported by 6000 and above online journals (EBSCO’s
‘Academic Search Elite’ and ‘Business Source Premier’.)

Library Structure:

 Ground Level

In one wing is the Reading Hall with the ‘Growth of the College Cell’ and the
‘Exam Preparation Cell’ which functions as the Ready Reference. In the other
wing is the Conference/ Seminar Hall well equipped with gadgets like the
LCD,OHP, Television, a System with a multimedia, Boardroom and a lobby.

 First and Second Level:

The Under Graduate Library and its ready reference section and the Post
Graduate Library and its ready reference section with individual carrels at the first
level are interconnected with their stack areas on the second level.

 Third Level

The Internet Browsing Centre and the Journal Section are housed on the third
level.
A lift is provided for the user community. A ramp is provided for the physically
challenged.

The transition, which began in May 2003 with the shifting of the books
from the old Library to the new Library, has witnessed re-classification (Dewey
Decimal Classification), data entry, bar-coding and re-arranging enabling a fully
automated ambience for research and resource access. The usage of swipe
cards ensures protected borrowing and returning of books by staff and students.
The automated open-access library functions from 8.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. It also
offers Network Resource sharing (Internet Centre)-a bee hub of activity and
Photo copying facilities.

Yet another milestone in the modernization of the library would be the

installation of RF (Radio frequency) solution.

Our future initiatives are:

 Transformation from collection management to knowledge

management

 Establishing a digital library.

 Founding of an archival cell.

Events:

The best practice of the General Library is Cornucopia- the yearly Library
fest. This is aimed towards marketing Library services. It brings all the book
publishers and dealers on one platform through book exhibition. This enables to
cultivate the habit of ‘own a book every year’. To accentuate the need for
initiating the culture of reading among students a renowned speaker is invited to
address the young community every year.
