Chart-Topping Singer Aloe Blacc and Wife Maya Jupiter
to be Honored by Peace Over Violence at Humanitarian Awards

Blacc, Jupiter to Perform at Sept 26 Event in Pasadena
Celebrating Leaders in Violence Prevention Movement

Pasadena, CA (Sept. 23, 2014)Recognizing outstanding leaders in the sexual and domestic violence
prevention movement, the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization Peace Over Violence (POV) will honor
married musicians Aloe Blacc and Maya Jupiter with the Voice over Violence Award at the 43
rd
Annual
Humanitarian Awards Dinner on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena.
The event will also include a special recognition of the 25th anniversary of POVs Deaf, Disabled, and
Elder Services Program, the first in the nation to serve deaf survivors of domestic violence and sexual
assault.
Complete 2014 Humanitarian Awards Dinner honorees are:
Aloe Blacc and Maya Jupiter Voice over Violence Award: Aloe Blacc, the chart-topping singer
behind such hits as The Man and Wake Me Up, and his wife, singer Maya Jupiter, were the
2014 celebrity spokespeople for POVs Denim Day in LA & USA campaign. Their involvement
brought increased awareness to the annual campaign, which supports survivors and educates
people about sexual violence prevalence and prevention. Blacc and Jupiter are dedicated to social
activism and frequently volunteer with Peace Over Violence, leading songwriting workshops for
teens. Together, they recently founded Artivist Entertainment, to bring together likeminded artists
for positive social change. Blacc will perform three (3) live numbers at the event, including a duet
with Jupiter.
Kaiser Permanente Verizon Wireless Hopeline Award: Nationally recognized for maintaining
one of the most comprehensive health system responses to domestic violence in the U.S., Kaiser
Permanente continues to lead the way in addressing interpersonal violence through nation wide
medical personnel training, policy initiatives, and innovative approaches to violence prevention. As
the largest nonprofit healthcare system in the country, Kaiser Permanente has been instrumental in
the leadership and direction of the groundbreaking No More Campaign, launched last year.
Developed through the collaboration of advocates and corporate leaders alike, the No More
Campaign calls on all of us, together, to speak outto end the silence, shame and stigma that
surrounds domestic and sexual violence.

Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez Public Service Award: Chief Sanchez is a strong
proponent of community collaboration and integration and was instrumental in developing the
Community Forum on Gang Violence, a series of workshops in Santa Monica that provided an
opportunity for residents to work collaboratively to reduce youth violence, increase communication
and improve relationships between law enforcement and the community. As Chief of the Pasadena
Police Department, Sanchez has served as a bridge person between law enforcement and the
community. This past year he has worked closely with Peace Over Violence to build and run a
Domestic Abuse Response Team in Pasadena staffed with volunteer advocates.

The Punk Singer, A Film About Kathleen Hanna Media Award: In The Punk Singer, filmmaker
Sini Anderson captures the story of punk musician and feminist activist, Kathleen Hanna. Kathleen
began her career as a spoken word performer and then quickly became one of the most powerful
voices in punk music as the frontwoman for Bikini Kill and later, Le Tigre. Through decades of
archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, the documentary highlights Kathleens
unwavering activism against rape culture and sexual violence. With the help of her bandmates,
Hanna changed the rules in Punk Music, a genre with a long history of misogyny and violence. She
made her concerts safe and empowering places for women and helped organize the riot grrrl
movement, a call to action for increased feminist activity and female involvement in the punk music
scene. The film has inspired numerous post screening dialogues on feminism, sexual violence and
community activism-including Peace Over Violences Denim Day rape prevention campaign kick off
event.
In a year that has brought increased attention to rape culture and to the institutional responses to violence
in our schools, universities, military bases, churches and places of business, it is our honor to celebrate
these individuals and organizations that have truly impacted the lives of survivors and our wider community
in innovative, compassionate and groundbreaking ways, said Patti Giggans, executive director of Peace
