Abstract

ISO 1940-1:2003 gives specifications for rotors in a constant (rigid) state. It specifies
balance tolerances, the necessary number of correction planes, and methods for verifying
the residual unbalance.

Recommendations are also given concerning the balance quality requirements for rotors in a
constant (rigid) state, according to their machinery type and maximum service speed. These
recommendations are based on worldwide experience.

ISO 1940-1:2003 is also intended to facilitate the relationship between the manufacturer and
user of rotating machines, by stating acceptance criteria for the verification of residual
unbalances.

Detailed consideration of errors associated with balancing and verification of residual
unbalance are given in ISO 1940-2.

ISO 1940-1:2003 does not cover rotors in a flexible state. The balance quality requirements
for rotors in a flexible state are covered by ISO 11342.

Comments (case study):

1. The present vibration of brg. 2 is verifiable, i.e. true and correct as per data gathered from
1559H Oct. 25 to 1259H Oct. 27, 2012.
2. The shaft orbits have shown forward precision, unbalance vibration is prominent (in
comparison with the other brg. amplitude level) but manifested waveforms other than
unbalance.
3. Mechanical looseness is not emphasized.

4. Based from the evaluation zones (see attached), qualitative assessment of the shaft vibration
on a given machine and provide guidance on possible actions. The present vib. falls within
Zone B -- Machines with vibration within this zone are normally considered acceptable for
unrestricted long-term operation.

Summary:

Polar plot Orbit plot
Brg. 2Y
(vertical)

For the last 45 hr, the 1X vib. vector has
shown NO significant change of its
amplitude & phase from its initial
condition taken. This is apparent from
the blob being formed by the vibration
vectors.

Has a forward precision and the
unbalance vibration is prominent
(comparing that with the other brg.)
Also being manifested are
waveforms other than unbalance
problem. Also the high spot which is
the angular location of the peak
amplitude displacement is used to
determine the heavy spot, i.e. 90 deg.
above the resonance mode.
Brg. 2X
(horizontal)

The heavy spot is less than 60 deg. left
towards the phase reference mark
(keyphasor).

Nearly similar with the brg. 2Y(turbine
inboard) behavior. Nearly similar with the
brg. 2Y(turbine inboard) behavior. This
depicts an indication of another machine
malfunction that deviates from the
normal expectation of an unbalance
rotor.
