he Temple of Terror Haunted House in El Dorado Hills is back on this Halloween sea-
son to thrill guests with a spine-tingling journey, bringing locals deepest fears to life.
Hands4Hope, a local nonprot dedicated to developing youth leadership and
community involvement through service learning and outreach, has created and hosted a
haunted house nearly every year in the El Dorado Hills Town Center since 2010.
This years theme is Temple of Terror, designed by theatrical and stage production
experts with many years of experience thrilling crowds, large and small, said Samantha
DeLeon, with Hands4Hope. The Temple of Terrors guided tour will take you on a terrifying
journey through seven treacherous lands lled with ancient artifacts used in rituals of the
past. You wont want to miss this years special production.
According to DeLeon, the haunted house covers more than 2,200 square feet of donat-
ed space in the El Dorado Hills Town Center.

The custom build began in August with a eet of
passionate and dedicated volunteers who work with Hand-
s4Hope youth to design, build, decorate, paint and staff
the Haunted House, DeLeon said.
More than 10 adults and 30 youth will be trained, cos-
tumed and choreographed to deliver a terrifying experi-
ence for guests. Most of these student volunteers attend
Oak Ridge High School.
The reason I like helping out with the Haunted House
is because I like using my creative abilities to help make
a difference in our community, said Chidinma Ohanele,
18, Oak Ridge graduate. The Haunted House is such a
big event for Hands4Hope, and the money raised during
the event goes towards the funding of various outreach
projects. Also its just a lot of fun being behind the scenes
of such a great project.
Ohanele volunteered while in high school and still
continues to help Hands4Hope after graduating.
Other students enjoy the volunteer aspect, as well.
My favorite parts about volunteering at the Hand-
s4Hope Haunted House are helping with the preparation
and work that goes into building it, said Haley Lehtola, 17,
Oak Ridge senior, and then being able to see the commu-
nity coming together to support Hands4hope while having
lots of fun.
Other young volunteers enjoy the scare of
the event.
I love doing this haunted house because its
a fun way to earn money for the organization,
said Riley Fitzpatrick, 18, Oak Ridge senior. I
enjoy seeing the looks of terror on their (attend-
ees) faces.
The haunted house is recommended only
for those 13 years and older.
Local schools will also participate, promot-
ing School Nights at the Temple of Terror to
benet a student-selected club or program.
The students are involved in creating the
on-campus marketing plan and promotions, giv-
ing them a great experience in real-life business
marketing, DeLeon said.
For the schools Night at the Haunted
Hands4Hope volunteers Riley Fitzpatrick, 18, Oak Ridge

sound effects will stay frightening throughout the haunt-
ed house tour.

Hands4Hope Youth Making A Difference,
is a youth-driven nonprot organization based
in El Dorado County, serving El Dorado and
Sacramento counties. According to DeLeon, the
organization empowers youth in kindergarten
through 12th grade to make a positive differ-
ence in the world through exploration, action
and leadership.
The Temple of Terror will be open every
Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, Oct. 10-31,

Folsoms Lion Park is the perfect backdrop for this amazing
faire. If you have never had the opportunity to go to a Renais-
sance Faire, Folsom Renaissance Faire is something to expe-
rience, Miernik said. The faire will be entertaining from the
moment you step into the park.
According to organizers, the show will feature many famous
and well-loved characters from Shakespeares plays.
The faire will also include a marketplace, with nearly 80
merchants and crafters selling items including jewelry, leather
corsets, swords, pewter cups, aromatic oils, soaps, wooden
hangings and more. A variety of food and drinks will also be
available for purchase.
Imperial Knights will also showcase their horsemanship
skills in the joust.
Imagine, warhorses tossing their heads nervously and
stamping the ground at either end of the jousting feld, Mier-
nik said. Each holds a hefty 12-foot lance leveled at an oppo-
nent across the feld. With a signal from the marshal and a roar
from the crowd, the horses launch at each other, breaking from
a standstill into a full stride within seconds. As they converge
with a thunder of hooves and a blur of color, the knights grip
their lances tightly and brace for the impact. It comes with a
loud splintering of wood and a massive shock to the chest. And
the crowd goes wild.
The Folsom Renaissance Faire is from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Satur-
day, Oct. 18, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19. The event will
be at Folsom Lions Park both days.

he rst glow run in Folsom last year was a huge success. Organizers expect
this years event to be even bigger.
Nearly 1,500 people are expected to descend on Sutter Street for Fol-
soms second glow run, to be held at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 4. Participants are encouraged
to show their glow and dress up in costumes with everything that glows, blinks,
shines and sparkles. Bring your dogs on a leash and make them glow too. Runners
will be given glowing eye glasses, bracelets and necklaces.
We really believe this is a great family event, race director Sarah Trobee said.
Last year we had a lot of people come down with their families and dogs and
walked the event and enjoyed our play stations. The silly-string station was a big hit
last year, and this year were adding a foam station at the nish line. Some busi-
nesses on Sutter Street are offering specials for race participants afterwards. Its just
a neat family event that will bring everyone down to Sutter Street.
The glow run is all about fun. Its a non-competitive run held on a at 2.5-mile
course and the event is not timed. The course takes participants along the bike
trail near the Historic District. The family-friendly event features several glow fun
stations such as a silly-string shootout, chalk it up/leave your mark and a foam ma-
chine at the nish line. Music will also be played at various spots along the course.
Some merchants on Sutter Street will also be offering specials for participants,
who can come early to take advantage of them; some businesses will be open after
the event, as well.
Participants can register as an individual or as a family or group of four. Cost is
$28 for ages 4 and older. Kids 3 and under are free. A family or group of four can
participate for $107.

fter successfully opening four restaurants in the Sacramento region, Jason Enyeart recently launched
Hop House in El Dorado Hills Town Center, next to Bistro 33 on the Waterfront.
Ive worked in the restaurant business my entire life, starting as a busboy and working my way
up the ranks, Enyeart said.
Enyeart is a graduate of Oak Ridge High School and recently moved back to El Dorado Hills in June. He
wanted to join the craft beer movement with his new restaurant.
Craft beer is gaining both popularity and respect, he said. Thirty years ago, there were 50 craft breweries in the
U.S.; today there are nearly 2,400.
The restaurant offers beer and wine.
Enyeart said he plans to rotate his craft beers regularly and change the food menu seasonally with chef Tyler Mort.
For more information and updated food and beer specials, visit hophouseedh.com.
Q. What makes your restaurant unique?
A. Our ingredients make us unique. We create our menu seasonally to use the freshest ingredients available year-round.
Q. How would you characterize your style of food?

Once again, Dave Bender of KOVR Channel 13 will act as the master of

The Big Autumn Auction provides an opportunity for community
supporters to get together for an evening with local food, entertainment,
heart-warming stories from Bigs and Littles, plus auction items, all while
showing a common desire to support the organizations mission. According
to organizers, since they do not receive any federal or state funding, this
fundraiser helps Big Brothers and Big Sisters continue their efforts to reach
out to more children who need their services.
According to organizers, for more than 30 years, Big Brothers and
Big Sisters of El Dorado County have provided positive role models for
thousands of at-risk youth throughout the community.
Through one-to-one mentoring relationships, this nonprot

wner James Fales grew up in the restaurant business,
and has now started his own restaurant and alehouse in
Folsom.
The Canyon Grill and Alehouse opened at 9580 Oak Avenue
Parkway Suite 8, in Folsom. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-
10 p.m., seven days a week.
The casual, family style restaurant specializes in house-made
American food and craft beers.
I started working in the restaurant business at 16 years old,
Fales said. Ive worked every job in the restaurant business,
starting as a busboy. Ive managed restaurants for 15 years in the
Bay Area.
When Fales decided he was ready to open a restaurant him-
self, he looked to Folsom.
My family and I were living in the Bay Area, but had friends
up here, he said. When this location became available in
American River Canyon, we knew it was perfect.
Fales and his family now live in Granite Bay.
For more information and daily specials, visit canyonale-
house.com or nd them on Facebook.
Q. What makes your restaurant unique?

people will always be satised with our menu.
Q. How would you characterize your style of food?
A. We offer classic American food including cheeseburg-
ers, sandwiches, salads and fresh cut french fries.
Q. What is your signature menu item?

aged cheddar, lettuce, onions, avocado and applewood
smoked bacon with a chipotle aioli. All of our breads are
delivered fresh from Grateful Bread Company in Sacramen-
to. The chicken club is served on a hamburger bun.
Q. What kind of atmosphere does your restaurant
offer?
A. We offer a family-friendly restaurant atmosphere
with a full L shaped bar for adults to socialize. Everyone
is invited here.
Q. Do you offer anything special for your custom-
ers?
A. We offer a fun trivia night at 7 p.m. every Wednes-
day. We also have happy hour from 4-6:30 p.m., every

Participants are off and running at last years Folsom Blues Half Marathon. Race organizers are expecting nearly 3,000 runners to compete in the event,
to be held Oct. 18.
I
f you enjoy running by the lake and like
Johnny Cash, the Folsom Blues Breakout
13.1-mile half-marathon run is for you.
Nearly 3,000 people are expected to
participate in the event, formerly known
as the Four Bridges Half-Marathon, to be
held at 8 a.m. Oct. 18. The race begins
on Folsom Lake Crossing, and the course
takes runners counterclockwise around
Lake Natoma before nishing in the His-
toric District.
The race and post-race activities have
a Johnny Cash theme, which includes ve
bands playing music along the course.
We get a great turnout of local run-
ners, race organizer John Mansoor said.
Its a great opportunity to run around the
lake with a big group of people. Theres
an excitement to the event with the big
crowd, the music and starting on what we
like to call the Johnny Cash Bridge, other-
wise known as Folsom Lake Crossing. Its

Inside the Creative Mind -- Artists Forum,
the second in a creative series.
Inside the Creative Mind is sponsored by Mar-
shall Medical Center. Assistance League of Sierra
Foothills' ongoing creative series will highlight one
aspect of the arts each year and feature the talents
of well-known artists, authors, musicians, actors,
chefs and others who excel in their craft. The goal
of the organization is to help those in need in El
Dorado County and to bring meaningful cultural
events to the community.
This year's event will be from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 9 at
the Folsom Community Center.
The event will feature three internationally rec-
ognized artists: Gregory Kondos, David Foster and
Nina Paladino Caron.

Kondos won numerous prizes and is rec-
ognized as one of the world's most prominent
California landscape artists. Foster is a world-re-
nowned sculptor specializing in marble and
bronze. He has studios in South Lake Tahoe and
Italy. Paladino Caron is an internationally recog-
nized glass artist who has exhibited work at the
White House and has works on display in the
Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Moderating this year's event is the assistant
director and chief curator of the Crocker Museum,
Scott A. Shields.
The evening will consist of each artist sharing
his or her personal journey, a panel discussion
on the creative process, hors d'oeuvres, a no-
host wine bar and a rafe featuring art from each
guest speaker and other original works of art from
local artisans. All proceeds fund the Assistance
League's philanthropic programs, including the
signature program -- Operation School Bell,
which provides new school clothing for children in
need, and Sports Locker, which contributes schol-
arships and equipment for youths interested in
participating in organized sports but are unable to
afford the cost.
Tickets for the event are $55 each, with a 10
percent discount offered on the purchase of a
table for eight.

For those who arent ready to conquer a 13.1-mile
half-marathon, they can participate on a two-person
relay, cutting the race distance in half.
There is also a free one-kilometer breakaway
run for the kids, which last year drew about 250 par-
ticipants. The half-marathon featured 2,600 runners,
plus another 300 making up 150 relay teams. Mansoor
expects the same number of participants to attend this
years event.
Along with the half-marathon, a few events are
being held in Folsom the same day. At the nish line,
the Johnny Cash tribute band The Walking Phoenixes
will be playing, and there will also be a beer garden
nearby.
The Folsom Renaissance Faire will be from 10 a.m.
