Recent Developments
NRSC model is being adopted by CWC and it is
run during 2011 using 3 hour real-time hydro-
meteorological data
Forecast lead time has been increased to 42
hours instead of 30 hrs (CWC lead-time)
Reviewed by the Chairman, CWC and the river
co-ordination committee. CWC has decided to
adopt the similar model in other flood-prone rivers
Providing Technical assistance to NESAC also
Real-time Flood Hydrograph - 2011
To increase the forecast lead time from 42
hours to 60 hours, the present model being
extended to upstream reaches
IMD/MOSDAC forecast rainfall is proposed to
use in the extended model

Request was received from Director, CWC Shimla to investigate
formation of an artificial lake on Pin River, a tributary of Spiti river in
Himachal Pradesh on 19
th
J une 2012. Lake was reported to be
posing threat to downstreamhabitation in Spiti and Sutlej River and
also for district administration.
Pre IRS CARTOSAT data & RESOURCESAT-2 and RISAT-1 (SAR)
data was procured to identify and monitor the status of the lake.

Observations:
An artificial lake & impoundment observed on Pi n ri ver about 1.5 km downstream of
Chiddang village & 5.4 Km upstream from the confluence of Pin with Spiti ri ver near
Siluk.
Area of the impoundment was about 45 hectares as on 16-June-2012 .
A tributary joi ning the left bank of Pin River, might have contributed for the
impoundment.

Field photographs showing the blockage in the Pin River
(Source: CWC, Shimla)
Observations made by NRSC were validated and confirmed on ground by a reconnaissance survey carried out by the
Engi neer Representatives from Western Command. They have observed that the situation on the ground is stabilized
and the water level of Pin River is receding and there is no intervention in the flow of the Pin River.

1. A virtual Multi-Disaster Scenario was Created. Mobile PDAs were deployed in four districts
(Nalbari, Kamrup, Cachar and lakimpur districts)
2. Field info received in real time; visualized in geo-spatial viewer in NDEM Portal and also in
Bhuvan & Google portals. Action plans were generated in NDEM portal and communicated
back to field mobile PDAs
3. Flood info transferred thru DMS-VPN and integrated in NDEM portal
