canceofthesupportChina,IndiaandevenJapanare
givingRussiaasitconfrontsEuropeandAmericaover
Ukraine.ButMoscowissolidifyingfriendshipsbeyond
Asia,andoneinparticularbearscloseattention.Tisis
RussiasrelationshipwithIran.
First,recallhowmuchdiplomaticenergyEuropeand
Americahaveinvestedinrecentmonthsinimproving
relationswithTehraninthehopeofsecuringapermanent
peaceagreement.Americaspresidenthasworkedespecial-
lyhardtoplacateTehran.Ashispresidencywindsdown,
andwithhisdomesticpoliciesailing,BarackObama
wantstogodowninhistoryasthemanwhonegotiated
peacebetweentheU.S.anditsmostimplacableenemy.

despitethatcountrysintenseandunremittingquest
todominateSyria,LebanonandIraq.Thatseparation
hasunnervedU.S.allieslikeIsraelandSaudiArabia,

controltheregioninexchangeforwhatinevitablywould

haswarnedthatEuropeistheplacetowatch.Tedra-
maticdevelopmentsinUkraineareforcingtheContinent
toaddressitsmanyissuesandgureoutawaytocoalesce
intoaforcecapableofconfrontingRussia,Iranandother
crisescomingitsway.Separately,IranandRussiaalready
deeplyconcernEurope.Youcanbesurethedevelopment
ofamoresignicantaxisbetweenthesetwowillintensify
EuropesanxietiesandincreasethepressureonEuropes
leaderstocreatetheCatholic-inspired,German-ledunited
Europeansuperpowerthatwehavelongforecast.
