leader Zaki Baruti, an activist who
is also president of the St. Louis-
based Universal African Peoples
Organization. Rest assuredly, were
asking people not to vote for Steve
Stenger.
Also running are Libertarian
Party candidate Theo Brown Sr. and
Constitution Party candidate Joe
Passanise. The coalition did not throw
its support to a particular opponent
of Stenger. Baruti said he has not yet
decided whom he will support.
Baruti promised acts of civil
disobedience from the coalition in the
future, though he did not elaborate.
We welcome any type of protest to
keep in the public light the injustice
that occurred with Michael Brown, he
said.
Rita Mauchenheimer, who lives in
the Skinker DeBaliviere area, said she
attended the press conference because
she respects what the coalition is
doing.
Its about justice, she said. What
happened to that young man (Michael
Brown) is unjust. I feel like I need to
stand in solidarity with these people.
Meanwhile, a group of African-
American Democratic leaders called
the Fannie Lou Hamer Democratic
Coalition named for the late
Mississippi civil rights advocate
also has formed in the midst of
fallout from Ferguson. The group
has not yet decided whom to back for
county executive, said county council
Chairwoman Hazel Erby, D-First
District, who is heading the coalition.
Were still exploring our options,
Erby said. We will announce next
week, she said, adding that her
coalition is not working with the
Justice for Michael Brown Leadership
Coalition at this point.
Erby said the goal of her coalition is
to support candidates who have our
communitys best interest at heart
and that she would support whichever
candidate the group backs.
While the coalitions might convince
some Democratic voters not to support
Stenger, some Republicans could
actually be attracted to him, according
to pundits.
Criticism of Steve Stenger because
he supports Robert McCulloch might
very well garner him some supportive
votes among white Republicans who
otherwise would have cast their
ballots for Rick Stream, said Terry
Jones, professor of political science at
the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
These votes would be modest in
number, but since St. Louis County
is now clearly Democratic, no GOP
candidate can afford much erosion in
the Republican base.
Jones said the reaction among
Republicans is most likely to occur
in Stengers backyard, among South
County whites over age 45.
Stream agreed that its possible
the coalitions could help his campaign.
Ive spoken to a number of offcials
in the Hamer coalition, he said. I
havent spoken to the other group.
Ive spoken to a lot of elected offcials
and citizens and they have been very
receptive to my candidacy because
they know I have a heart for their
community.
Formation of the coalitions comes
on the heels of a raucous county
council meeting Sept. 16 in which
demonstrators angrily demanded
Stenger call on McCulloch to step
aside.
St. Louis County Police have
assigned a security detail to Stenger
following threats posted on social
media sites, said Offcer Brian
Schellman, spokesman for the
department. Stream declined the
same protection, Schellman said.
Stenger did not respond to requests
for comment for this story. He has said
he will back McCulloch, who has been
the elected prosecutor for more than
two decades. He said he has confdence
in McCullochs ability to bring a fair
outcome to the Brown case.
