Early Impressions of Warhammer Fantasy Terrain

As the unofficial terrain builder in our local Rogue Trader store, I've been asked to build the Warhammer Fantasy terrain.
I got the two large box sets, which is essentially 1 of every single new terrain in the Warhammer range. For those of you
who haven't gotten their hands on the Warhammer Fantasy Terrain, I thought I'd share some early impressions.

=========
1) The overall detail of the buildings is very nice and provides lots of different options to customize your building; very
similar to what the Cities of Death Buildings provided. My only complaint is that there didn't seem to be a lot of places to
put the models when built. However, I believe that this is because the game play is different from Fantasy and 40k when
it comes to using buildings.

=========
2) Out of the three buildings (Chapel, Watchtower, Fortified Manor), the Chapel is the easiest to build. The Watchtower is
pretty tricky as the walls are slightly concave/convex when you put it together. I strongly recommend that you cut all the
pieces out (9 pieces to make the watchtower and floor) and shave the flash. To make a wall section, you have to glue the
top and bottom part together. The sections are a bit confusing, but if you look at the back it becomes clear which pieces
go together.

Once you've glued each wall section, before the glue sets, you'll want to do a loose fit (without glue) and put 2 walls
together. At this point you'll understand what I mean about the walls being convex/concave. You definitely want to glue
those 2 walls first, and then work your way to build the other walls. The floor of the watchtower should be glued next,
which essentially keeps the shape of the other walls.

I used the GW plastic glue because I have time to move the parts around to adjust. However, I then used the GW
superglue to reinforce any areas I missed. I always tried to use the superglue in the insides of the building.

=========
3) The walls for the Fortified Manor are very sharp. I know that sounds sophmoric, but just be careful when you're
handling those pieces

=========
4) The Arcane Ruins, I'm surprised to say, are rather difficult to build. I like the options for the ruin pieces, but I'm having
a lot of trouble putting the pillars together. They just don't seem to fit right. I'm going to call the GW direct services and
see if I'm missing something.

=========
5) The modular hills are practically pre-built, which I guess is good for those that don't want to spend a lot of time building
their own hills. If you want to have hills in your gaming board, but don't want to spend the time making custom hills using
pink insulation foam, this is a pretty decent alternative (whether you play 40k or Fantasy)

=========
I'll be posting some WIP pics soon. In the meantime, feel free to ask me any questions on it. I'll try to provide an honest
answer.

Having only built the Chapel so far, I'd have to agree that its fairly easy to put together. However, to get a nice square fit,
I'd put the lower walls together first before adding on the top section (contrary to the instructions).

I've 'Bretonnianed' mine up a bit as well, clipped/scraped off the comets from the front, covered the front lower windows
with the shutters and filled the decorative beam(?) around the middle with milliput (and textured with wood grain).

I've also put a couple of fleur-de-lys' (shoulder shields) on the upper front, and at the peak of the roof. A Warmaster
KOTR went on the top of the roof and two WM Harpies have been stuck on as gargoyles. The final touch was the

traditional snail from the M@A sprue on top of a window.

I'll try and post pics when its all painted (hopefully can spray it today, depends on the weather).

Very nice Sir Zherroth, I especially like the Bretonnian touch - too many Empire fools running around these days. Nice
paint job!

I was very impressed with the Chapel model. It assembles easily and looks very good.

The $25.00 (US) price is a good value.

My only disappointment was that the twin tailed comets were molded onto some of the walls. That pretty much cemented
it as an Empire building. That was OK with me, but if I needed a Bretonnian building it never would have worked.

All the extras in the kit are awesome.

Very nice building Sir Zherroth.

Covering the decorative comets was inspired; I'd avoided getting the model and was going to scratch build my own Grail
Chapel along the lines of the Forge World job.

The comets weren't so much covered on the front as completely removed before being replaced with the fleur-de-lys.
Took all of 2 minutes (make sure you do it before constructing the chapel, its much easier that way)

Cheers for the compliments, now to work on one of the other buildings. (in between painting up my army and various
other conversions).

My thoughts looking at the kits were very similar to Duke Georgal's. The buildings aren't so much Warhammer Terrain
as Empire Terrain. They seemed from WD to be covered in comets, skulls, and other suck Imperial imagery. It would
have been so much better if they'd made the detail pieces separately so they could produce different customising packs,
it really put me off buying them.

Sir Zherroth - if you felt up to it, it would be really useful to have an article on how to convert the buildings to Bretonnian
buldings. Would you be able to write one?

The buildings aren't so much Warhammer Terrain as Empire Terrain.Religion is a key element within the Empire and
there are Chapels and shrines throughout the land.

Thats part of the description for the chapel! If the empire gets a range of buildings why dont we you ask?? Why not Orcs,
why not elves, why not Undead??? They should get some for each faction you say.

Why not go and build your own building from scratch. I believe the GW website has a page on building a chapel.

GW realised Imperial buildings to publicise the Nemisis Crown and where is the Crown fought for?? In the Empire. If they
released buildings for each faction they wouldn't sell as much of each. If they released them slowly then MR X would buy
one. Then release a new one next
year and MR X is tired of the old one and buys a new one. And so on and so on.

If they released them at once... MR X sees many buildings and buys one he likes. Can't afford any more and doesn't
need more as he is happy with his current one.

What a fantastic conversion, I'm in the process of constructing the buildings set and I too am trying to remove most, but
not all of the Empire reliefs.

I'm disappointed that they've gone Empire heavy in theme, I read in WD that they wanted to make Warhammer buildings
look like WH buildings and not just generic. In other words you can only use them with our gaming system, which from a
commerical point of view, makes no sense.

I've used greenstuff to fill in the comets,stars and moons and used a dentists tool ( you can get these from good craft
shops ) to scrape away the two tailed comets. But I'm only really following in Zerroths footsteps !

Here's the complete article by Zherroth:

Converting GW's Chapel to a Bretonnian Chapel

I just put together my chapel two days ago. I left it with all of the Empire markings in tact because I have a rather large
Empire army as well as Bretonnian. I figure I will use it as a Sigmarite Chapel. That being said...

I have to agree with Robert de Giselles that the emblems would have been better as seporate parts. They could have
made it a separate sprue like the New 40K vehicle command sprue. it could cover several different armies.

Or...

Each relevant army could have a separate sprue. In this case I think the Empire sprue should come by default but the
others could be ordered from direct services. This is a good idea for two reasons

1. It would allow you to get just the bits you need (except that you would have extra empire bits. but hey that is what
ruins are for. ;))
2. It would allow you to get the bits without having to buy a new building every time. This is good if you want bits to Bret
up some of you existing buildings.

Just my two cents
