3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1
Component parts.- The Type B-1 charger shal l consi st of the following:
Automatic el ectri c, pneumatic gun-bolt retractor mechanism, electropneumatic sear
actuator, el ectri c ammunition rounds counter impulse switch assembled together within
a dt i pi ece metal housing with mounts, and an external l y mounted AN receptacle.
3.2 Materials.-
3.2.1 Protecti ve treatment.. When materi al s are used i n the construction of the
charger that are subj ect to corrosion i n salt a i r or other atmospheric conditions l i kel y
to occur during servi ce usage, they shal l be protected against such corrosion i n a manner
that Wu1 in no way prevent compliance wi t h the performance requirements of thi s speci-
fication.

3.2.2.1 Standard parts.- Standard parts (MS, AV, or JAN) shal l be used wherever
they are sui tabl e for the purpose, and shal l be i denti fi ed on the drawing by thei r part
numbers. Commercial uti l i ty parts such as screws, bol ts, nuts, cotter pins, etc, may be
used, provided they possess sui tabl e properti es and are replaceable by the standard
parts (MS, AN, or JAN) without al terati on, and provided the corresponding standard park
numbers are referenced in the parts l i st and, if practi cabl e, on the contractor's
drawings.

3.3 Design,.- The gun charger shal l be designed to exert a driving force agai nst
the gun bol t stud through the enti re l ength of the gun bol t travel (7.25 inches) under
a mi ni mumgas pressure of 400 psi .

standard 3/16-inch tube.
3.3.4 Voltage.- The normal operating voltage of the charger shal l be 28 vol ts dc.

3.3.5
Current.- The current requirements of the charger shdl not exceed 7
amperes during operation and gun ire.
3.3.6 Coils.- The fi ni shed solenoid coi l s shal l be taped and impregnated with a
moisture-proof and heat-resi stant protecti ve coating.

3.4 Construction.- The gun charger shal l be constructed to meet the requirements
of fi gure 1.

3.4.1.4
When a voltage of 28 vol ts dc i s applied continuously and 4OO-psi a b
pressure is supplied, the retractor mechanism controls shal l be energized automatically
and the retractor pi ston shal l complete charging cycl es as necessaxy unti l the gun
fires. Further, i f a stoppage occurs during fi ri ng, the control system shal l energize
the charger and cl ear the s5oppages within an i nterval not exceeding 800 milliseconds,
whereupon gun f i re can be automatically resumed when the charging cycle i s completed.
Innnediately upon completion of fi ri ng, the gun bol t shal l return to (battery) starti ng
position. The retractor control s shal l be so designed that when an el ectri cal impulse
is applied by a remotely controlled switch or thermostat, the retractor pi ston shal l
drive the gun bol t to the rear, h which posi ti on it shal l be retai ned without current
consumption unti l released. When 28 vol ts are then appl i ed continuously through the
gun f i ri ng switch, the charger shall permit the gun bol t to return to (battery) starti ng
position,

3.10 Workmanshie.- The completed gun charger shal l be free of defects which may,

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1
Cl assi fi cati on of tests.- The inspection and testi ng of gun chargers shal l be
cl assi fi ed as follows:
(a) PreproductLon tests: Preproduction tests are those tests
performed on samples representati ve of the production of
the i tem af ter the award of contract, to det er be that the
production meets the requirements of tus speci fi cati on.
(b) Acceptance tests: Acceptance tests are those tests performed

4.2
Test conditions.- Tests as l i sted herein shal l be conducted at a temperature
of approximately 68 "F unless otherwise specified.
4.3 Preproduction tests.-
4.3.1
Sampling instructions.- Two gun chargers as speci fi ed i n the contract w i l l
be tested for design approval by the procuring acti vi ty, or when SO speci fi ed i n the
contraci,, at the contractor's pl ant under the supervision of the procuring acti vi ty.
4.3.2
-- Tests.- The Preproduction tests of gun chargers shal l consi st of all the
