Age range
Graph showing the death rate per 1000 per year of males and
females depending on their age range
MALES

Discussion: Is life more risky for Boys? (OBJECTIVE D)

In the graph we can see that the death rate of males is higher than that of females for all age
ranges except 1 to 9. This suggests that life is more risky for boys.

The graph shows this and some other trends. As you can see in the graph the boys have a higher
death rate except for age ranges 1 to 4, and 5 to 9. For example at an age of under one, 1.2 more
boys die than females. Also from the ages 25-29 0.4 boys die than girls. Furthermore another
trend is the changing death rate of males. For example under the age of 1 the death rate of males
is high, it is 5.7. Then it drastically decreases to 0.2. However then the death rate of the males
starts to increase and it ends in 0.8. On the other hand the females have a high rate in age less
than 1, 4.9, but then it drastically decreases to 0.2. It then does not increase a lot, ending with
a death rate of 0.4. We can see that even at older ages boys still have a higher death rate. The final
trend is that under the age of one, boys and girls have the highest death rate but boys still die
more.

We can assume that male and females have a higher death rate at the age of less than 1
because when they are born they have weaker immune system. This means that they are
affected more easily by diseases so they are more probable to die. Also baby boys are more likely
to die because 60% of them are born before nine months. Also they a larger chance of birth injury.
(http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080324173552.htm). Additionally, when the
boys and girls grow up they will have a higher death rate. This is because at the age of 20-24 and
25-29 they have more diseases. During this age people are more likely to consume alcohol, start
to smoke and have more stress. This causes CVD which makes people to have heart attacks killing
many more. Males still at older ages are more likely to die. This is since males are more likely to
consumer more alcohol and smoke so have a greater chance of having heart disease. Also men are
lilely to be more stressed than women since they have more physical work. Finally men have a
higher chance of having a high risk job like miner. All this means that men are more likely to have a
higher death rate at older ages.

In conclusion we can see that boys have a higher death rate than girls at most ages. This suggest
that males have more chance of dying so males have a more risky life.
