The tax levy for the Germantown School District was
approved during the annual meeting Sept. 22.
The levy for this year will be $28,890,911, a 1.62
percent decrease from last year's levy. According to
information provided by the district, the estimated tax
levy per $1,000 equalized valuation is estimated to be
$10.04, an increase from 9.84 last year. A home with
an equalized value of $238,384 will pay $2,393 in the
school district portion of the property tax, a $46
increase from last year.
The levy was approved by voice vote, with School
Board member Bruce Warnimont voting against the levy.
District residents also approved committing $1 mil-
lion for the capital projects funds which is for financing,
remodeling, repair and improvement at various build-
ings. During discussion on the motion, Warnimont noted
he chairs the building and grounds committee.
Warnimont said that the money in the fund was
increased to $1 million last year.
"We did a lot of improvements but we sure went
through that money fast," Warnimont said. "We continue
to play catchup with these things."
Warnimont said the fund is devoted to upkeep of
existing facilities in contrast to a facilities study that will
examine future needs
"We have aging facilities," Warnimont said. He
noted that the high school was constructed in the late
1960s while Kennedy Middle School was the previous
site of the high school. While the size of the Kennedy
building has doubled within the past 15 years, the orig-

For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is
scheduling a Fall brush pick-up starting the second Monday in October
(October 13, 2014). Although this process will take approximately 2
weeks to complete, we will not be extending the pick-up, or picking up
brush that is put out after Sunday, October 12, 2014.
Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with
the trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or
smaller into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light
rope. Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at
which we can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be
picked up as too often there is yardwaste in the bottom of the
container. Yardwaste and leaves are not included in
the pick-up. We encourage you to take your
yardwaste to the Recycling Center.
Please be aware that raking leaves into the
street area is against Village Ordinance and
the Village of Germantown WILL NOT pick
up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to
take your leaves to the Recycling Center.

Menomonee Falls students are get-
ting ready to test their math skills while
raising funds for local schools.
Mathnasiums TriMathlon contest is
designed encourage kids to engage in
math and to support local schools.
Children at all levels of math ability
are invited to participate. In addition to
winning medals, all students who par-
ticipate this year will earn money for
local schools with a donation for each
student participating in the event.
The winner at each grade level will
be entered into the Grand Prize
TriMathlon.
The competition, open to 2nd-5th
grade students, will be held at on Oct.
18 at the Menomonee Falls Mathnasium
Learning Center at N78 W14569

Participation is free and registration is
now open at mathnasiumtrimathlon.com.
Mathnasiums TriMathlon provides
a wonderful opportunity for kids to
engage in math in a fun way that also
gives back to the community, said

Education Division. Were proud to
support this event and inspire more kids
to develop a love for math.
The TriMathlon consists of three
events:
Magic Squares, where students
are awarded points for developing their
own math problems.
The Counting Game, which tests
students ability to count from any num-
ber, to any number, by any number.
Mental Math Workout, which asks
students to solve problems without a
pencil and paper in order to show off
their number sense.
Students do not need to be enrolled
in a Mathnasium center to participate.
Prep materials, including a practice test,
are available on the Mathnasium

ing. Riveredge Silent Sports is a series of
programs focused on outdoor exercise and

ized recreation we enjoy, not the silence of
the participants.) Join us for an easy pad-
dle on Little Cedar Lake near West Bend as
we take in the beauty of fall from the water.
Perfect for beginners, well first learn 4
basic canoe strokes on land and practice
them as we explore watery habitats by
canoe. Riveredge provides canoes, pad-
dles and life jackets or you may bring your
own. All participants are required to wear
a life jacket. In case of inclement weather,
Riveredge will cancel the trip and provide
a full refund. Pre-registration required.

Restorations: Are They for the
Birds?Tuesday, Oct. 7 (hike at 6 p.m.,

and design have on wetlands, revealing
whether restored wetlands are indeed for

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS
FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS
The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning September 29th and continuing through October
17th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the
mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.
If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using
water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure
that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from
being drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an
additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining dis-
colored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

A male subject reported he was the
victim of an armed robbery that occurred
in the W17000 block of County Line Road
around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11. He said his
vehicle, cell phone and money were taken.
The vehicle was located at a local towing
lot.
Disorderly conduct
A male subject was cited for disor-
derly conduct at 12:52 p.m. Sept. 9 after
he punched another student during an
altercation at Germantown High School,
W180 N11501 River Lane.
One male subject was cited for dis-
orderly conduct at Germantown High
School at 9:50 p.m. Sept. 11 after he was
involved in a physical altercation with
another male.
Fraud
A female subject from the N9000
block of Wendy Lane reported Sept. 10
that an unknown subject had used her per-
sonal information to open numerous credit
cards, charging a total of $2,908.
Motor vehicle theft
A male subject was arrested after
investigation revealed he had taken his
mothers vehicle without permission from
the W16000 block of Thorn Apple Road.
He was placed in jail on a felony warrant.
Probation violation
A male subject was taken into cus-
tody on a probation violation at 3:45 p.m.
Sept. 9 in the W14000 block of Mequon
Road.
Retail theft
A male subject was cited for retail
theft at 8:42 p.m. Sept. 11 at Walmart,
W190 N9855 Appleton Avenue.

third annual Halloween Candy Buyback

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives the theme of Fire Prevention Week

With a theme of Working Smoke
Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every
Month, Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 5-
11; however, the push for fire safety goes
well beyond a mere seven days each calendar
year, officials say.
We want citizens to realize that this is
not just about a special week, it is all the
timewe want to raise awareness every day
of the week all year long, said Menomonee
Falls Assistant Fire Chief Jim Mollet. We
strive to make fire safety a daily message.
But for this particular weekestablished
by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) in 1922 to commemorate the Great
Chicago Fire which began Oct. 8, 1871fire
safety becomes the hot topic.
During that period we try to visit every
educational institution in the village and
focus on proper exit routines and teach
things like what to do if your clothes catch
fire, said Mollet. Today more than ever
before, with new products out there and
more electronics in the home, the dangers are
there.
The danger in 1871, legend has it, was
Catherine O'Learys cow which kicked over
a lamp and set the family barn, and eventual-
ly the whole city of Chicago, on fire.
According to the NFPAwebsite, the incident
killed more than 250 people, left 100,000
homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 struc-
tures and burned more than 2,000 acres.
As if this wasnt bad enough, the
Peshtigo Firewhich occurred the exact same
dayleft far more wreckage in its wake. The
most devastating forest fire in American his-
tory, the northeast Wisconsin blaze killed
1,152 people, burned down 16 towns and
destroyed 1.2 million acres.
It is precisely these horrific numbers that
make fire safety an essential lifestyle.
What this week is designed to do is
remind everyone that even a little fire can get
out of control and cause tremendous dam-
age, said Germantown Fire Chief Gary
Weiss. We start the message in the grade
schools because it is so crucial to get into the
habit of fire safety at a young age and keep it
as a habit for the rest of your life.
Although tragic, these two great blazes
brought about the huge positive of fire safe-
ty as a mainstream message.
On the 40th anniversary of the Great
Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association
of North America (now known as the
International Fire Marshals Association)
decided to start observing the tragedy in a
way that drives home the importance of fire
prevention, and according to the National
Archives and Records Administration's

Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the
longest running public health and safety observance on
record. The week is observed on the Sunday through
Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls and each year has a spe-
cific area of focus.
This year we are really emphasizing the importance of
having working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide
detectors in the houseone of every floor of the home and
one in every bedroom, said John Delain, public education
coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department.
Delain went on to offer a few useful tips: change the bat-
teries every Daylight Savings time; clean the detectors with
a vacuum or canned air once per month; and test them regu-
larly.
Its very important to make sure the detectors are work-
ing at all times, he said.
In conjunction with the Safe Kids Coalition of Southeast
Wisconsin and Dominos Pizza, the department is running a
program called Delivering Fire Safety.
On Oct. 23, several pre-registered participants (registra-
tion forms will be available at the Safety Fair as well as on
Dominos boxes) will receive a surprise visit from village
firefighters. Those who have working smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors will receive a free large, one-topping
pizza and those who do not will receive a working smoke
detector.
We will go and check their house and teach them about
fire and carbon monoxide safety while we are there, said
Delain. Its just another way to get the word out to the com-
munity.

Germantown Fire Safety FairSaturday, Oct. 4, 10:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Fire Station #2, N115 W18752 Edison
Drive. The event will include a variety of childrens and fam-
ily activities, including a Sparky Bounce House, a visit by
Flight for Life, a display of fire trucks and the Survive Alive
House. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
West Bend Open HouseSaturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 1
p.m., at Station #1, 325 N. 8th Avenue (located at the corner
of 7th Avenue and Washington Street). The open house will
give the public an opportunity to meet their local firefighters,
experience the Fire Safety House, tour the station and com-
plete a fire safety quiz for a chance to win breakfast with the
firefighters. T-shirts and refreshments will be available for
purchase to raise money for Chix for a Cause for breast can-
cer awareness.

In the village of Sussex, fire prevention events are held in
August in conjunction with the villages National Night Out event
outside the village, with the Pauline Haass Public Library ice cream
social held a short distance away.
Sussex Fire Chief Colin Curtis noted the department conducts
fire safety events in schools, businesses, churches and other com-
munity venues throughout the year. The department also provides
station tours for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Moms Clubs, antique car
groups, preschools and elementary schools.
In addition, the department has a presence at several annual
community events.

Not everyone has to worry about pipes
freezing in the winter, but much of America
does. If the temperature in your area routine-
ly drops to 20 degrees or below, it will be
worth your time and energy to prepare and
maintain your home to prevent your pipes
from bursting. Pipes burst when an ice block-
age forms and the pressure builds up behind
it. While you wont have ice shooting into
your home, youll have all of the water that
has built up behind it in the basement, in the
crawlspace or through the walls of your
house.
Proper insulation is the first step to pre-
ventative maintenance. The unheated areas
of your house are the most important to insu-
late. Attics, basements and crawlspaces are
the general culprits. Polyethylene or fiber-
glass tubes are available to keep the cold
out of pipes. Youll want to measure the
diameter of the pipes and purchase the cor-
rect size. This will ensure you have to make
only one trip to your home supply store.
Pipe insulation is carried in most big box
stores and in all hardware and home supply
stores. It can be cheaper in the spring month
as prices tend to go up as the temperatures
drop and demand goes up. You will want to
be particularly aware of any pipes that have
been stressed by previous freezing or have
recently been installed.
If you experience significant periods of
severe winter weather, you might consider
wrapping pipes in heat tape before insulat-
ing them. The instructions for installation are
very specific, and it is essential to follow
them. If you dont, the heat tape can lead to
fires. Heat tape also has to be checked reg-
ularly to ensure it is still functioning effective-
ly.
Once youve taken all of the prerequisite
steps, youll still have some maintenance to
do to ensure you dont wake up in a puddle.
When the temperature is expected to drop,
turn on your faucets, particularly those that
flow along outside walls and are the most
exposed to the cold. This will reduce the
pressure and can prevent an explosion in the
pipes, even if an ice dam does form.
Opening cabinets that contain pipes will let
the warm air from the rest of your house flow
onto the pipes, keeping them warmer.
You can take one more step and check
the basement and garage for any leaks.
Look particularly for places where cold air
could be directly applied to pipes from
cracked windows, gaps or areas where the
insulation has worn away. Applying your
general insulation strategies will save money
on your energy bill, and it can also keep
your pipes warmer and delay or prevent a
freeze.
Preventative maintenance is never an
attractive fix. Its neither a new skylight nor a
fresh coat of paint, and it wont be instantly
noticeable. Pipe insulation and maintenance,
however, will add to the value of your home
in the long run by preventing costly damage
and a nasty surprise in the middle of the
night.

defeated Grafton in North Shore
Conference play Sept. 23, 25-13, 25-17,
25-14.
In Greater Metro Conference action,
Menomonee Falls lost to Brookfield East
Sept. 23 14-25, 14-25, 20-25.
Also on Sept. 23, Hamilton played at
West Allis Central. At a weekend tourna-
ment in Pewaukee Sept. 16, the Chargers
lost to Mukwonago (22-25, 12-25),
Oconomowoc (21-25, 22-25) and
Sheboygan Falls (18-25, 24-26).
Kettle Moraine Lutheran had mixed
results at a tournament in Watertown Sept.
20. The Chargers beat De Pere 25-17, 25-
21 but then lost to Neenah (24-26, 21-25)
and Watertown (20-25, 15-25).
State rankings: Germantown was
ranked ninth in last week's Division I coach-
es poll while Kettle Moraine Lutheran was
ranked seventh in Division 2.
Girls volleyball:
Germantown tops Grafton
The Germantown girls cross country
team finished second at the Waukesha
South Cross Country Festival held at
Minooka Park Sept. 20.
Germantown was led by Alyssa
Goesch, who finished fifth with a time of
20:56. She was followed by Briana Klopfer
in seventh (21:09), Calli Lemke in 14th
(22:06), Kayla Hower in 17th (22:18),
Jennifer Lundgren in 18th (22:19), Molly
Baus in 24th (22:33) and Emily Betthauser
in 39th (23:17).
The Germantown boys team finished
seventh at the meet. Germantown was led
by Jacob DuFrane, who finished 20th with
a time of 17:46. He was followed by Craig
Reese in 28th (17:59), Jake Garvey in 31st
(18:05), Brady Sheridan in 49th (18:44)
and Evan Adair in 62nd (19:10).
The Menomonee Falls boys cross coun-
try team finished eighth at the St.
Catherines Angel Invite held at UW-
Parkside Sept. 20. Menomonee Falls was
led by Jake McMahon, who finished 33rd
overall with a time of 17:44.5. He was fol-
lowed by Josh Hindman in 43rd (17:53.1),
Dom Carini in 54th (18:06.7), Cooper
Dozzi in 55th (18:09.2), Jayce Kolinski in
56th (18:09.8) and Zach Pogorzelski in
125th (19:08.9) .
The Menomonee Falls girls team fin-
ished 17th at the invite. The top finish for
Menomonee Falls came from Tessa Estock,
who finished 69th overall.
Cross country: Germantown girls
second at Waukesha South meet
Menomonee Falls improved its record
to 3-2 in the Greater Metro Conference
and 11-2 overall following a 5-1 win over
West Allis Hale Sept. 23. Alex Eastman
scored two goals while Ian Storts, Tyler
Shane, and Ryan Callan also scored.
The previous Thursday Menomonee
Falls beat Mukwonago 3-2, with Eastman,
Joe Burgoyne and and Dalzhon Nelson all
scoring for Menomonee Falls.
Hamilton tied Brookfield East Sept. 23,
1-1. Afterward, the Chargers had a 1-2
Greater Metro Conference record and a 6-
5 overall mark.
Germantown got its first North Shore
Conference win of the season Sept. 23, as
the Warhawks beat Nicolet 2-1. The win
followed a 1-0 nonconference victory over
Racine Case Sept. 18. Germantown had a
6-7 overall record prior to a Sept. 25 non-
conference match at West Bend West.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran stayed on top
of the Flyway Conference with a 8-1 win
over Campbellsport Sept. 23. Griffin
Hoerchner and Noah Semmann both
scored three goals while Brandon Prahl and
Joshua Murphy each added a goal for
Kettle Moraine Lutheran. Afterwards, the
Chargers were 5-0 in the Flyway and 12-2
overall.
Soccer: Falls, Germantown
post conference wins
The Germantown Warhawks won their
fifth straight game Sept 19 while recording
their third double-digit win over a North
Shore Conference opponent.
The Warhawks scored on their first five
possessions to open the game while also
returning a fumble and an interception for a
touchdown on the way to a 66-0 win at
Milwaukee Lutheran.
Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. completed 11 of
19 passes for four touchdowns while Joe
Lemerond ran for 165 yards and two touch-
downs on 11 carries. Lawhorn started the
evening with a 27-yard pass play to Cole
Karcz at the 10:35 minute of the first quar-
ter. On Germantown's next possession,
Lawhorn connected with Steve Doran on a
2-yard pass play at the 8:18 mark. On the
Warhawks next possession, Lawhorn con-
nected with Karcz on a 37-yard pass play
at the 5:54 mark. Germantown finished the
quarter with a 37-yard field goal by Carter
Schmitz.
"That was one of our goals this week,
this is what we needed to do: We needed
to figure out how to score right away and
get after it, and we did," Germantown
Coach Jake Davis said.
With the Nicolet forfeit later in the sea-
son taken into consideration, Germantown
qualified for the playoffs with the win over
Milwaukee Lutheran.
Davis said he would continue to focus
on having his team starting fast and execut-
ing plays.
We've got to build on what we've
done and continue to get better," Davis
said.
Menomonee Falls 13, Hamilton
3: The teams entered halftime scoreless.
Menomonee Falls got on the board with a
79-yard run by Bryce McMurtry at the 7:46
mark of the third quarter to lead 6-0 after
the extra point was unsuccessful. Hamilton
narrowed the lead on a 21-yard field goal
by Matt Barnes at the 2:03 mark of the
third quarter.
Menomonee Falls extended its lead
when McMurtry and Brady Schneider con-
nected on a 47-yard pass play at the 11:51
mark of the fourth quarter.
McMurtry led all runners with 129
yards on 17 carries and one touchdown.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran 27,
Laconia 19: The Chargers improved their
Flyway Conference record to 3-0 while
holding a 4-1 overall record. Nicholas Lipp
ran 14 times for 137 yards and two touch-
downs while Jared Henning completed 9 of
17 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown
for the Chargers.

Amy Belle Elementary School recent took up the Ice-Bucket Challenge. All the
students and teachers took part in the event. Among those taking the challenge were

The whole challenge in the district began with the superintendent when he spon-
taneously accepted the challenge at the district in-service back in August. After he
challenged the principals, the staff at MacArthur Elementary accepted and then
challenged Rockfield, which in turn challenged Amy Belle. In the end, everyone took
part at Amy Belle with the teachers getting doused while the students cheered them
on. The students also donated a total of $439.29 to contribute to ALS research. It
was a fun, service-oriented way to end the first week of school. Submitted photos and

Germantown School Board
Administrator Jeff Holmes wasn't low key in
his assessment of the state of the district.
"I think when you look at Germantown,
Wisconsin on all the levels in terms of what
is provided, after 20 plus years in this state
in education, I don't think it gets much bet-
ter than Germantown," Holmes said during
a discussion at the regular board meeting.
Holmes comments came during a discus-
sion on the board goals.
Holmes is starting his second year in the
district.
"Thank you, Jeff," board member Bruce
Warnimont said in response. Warnimont
then added that "our parents, our children
our staff work hard to put you in a position
where you can say that."
Holmes said he has been "greatly
encouraged" by what he has seen in the
district and how the opportunity is there to
express that in a better manner
"I think the initiatives we have going on
with the standards development and every-
thing else it's a fantastic opportunity for
Germantown and I think you have a great
basis for that in your current goals," Holmes
said.
School Board President Bob Soderberg
said the board goals are "a work in
progress." Soderberg said he agreed with
Holmes that were "qualitative" aspects in of
the district that needed to be captured any
analysis.
"But I also want to state that we do
need to have metrics in place. That's what
we're here for as a board of education. We
don't want to take a step back, we want to
constantly raise the bar," Soderberg said.
Soderberg said he asked board mem-
bers to send information on board goals so
the board can do more of a "deep dive"
during future meetings.
Warnimont added that the metrics are
where the most work will need to be done
as far as board goals.
"I've got every confidence in the world
that we have enough self-criticism that we're
going to measure ourselves up and down,"
Warnimont said.

A $100,000 tax for the community
services fund. Director of Business and
Auxiliary Services Ric Ericksen explained
that tax levy for the fund has been approxi-
mately $100,000 since 2010-11 but until
last year was not separate from the rest of
the district budget. He said a separate
motion for the fund was approved at last
year's board meeting.
Ericksen said the separate motion is in
response to disclosure requirements of
WIsconsin Act 20, which was approved by
the Legislature in 2013.
Allowing the district to sell property
which is no longer needed by the district;
Allowing the district to lease private
property for the purpose of providing early
childhood education and other educational
services. There were a few no votes heard.
Keeping the salaries of board mem-
bers at $5,000 for all members. Resident
Jill North noted that the salaries were
increased from $4,000 to $5,000 at last
year's meeting. All board members
abstained on the salary vote.

unwanted hazardous chemicals, electronic
goods, pharmaceutical medication, and
used tires. This is the fifth consecutive year
for the Full Service Clean Sweep Program
which has been coordinated by the Land
and Water Conservation Division of the
Planning and Parks Department; while part-
nering with the Countys Health
Department, Sheriffs Department and the
Highway Department. The drive-through
collection makes this program simple and
efficient for participants. A $10 pre-regis-
tration fee is required for the hazardous
waste and electronic goods; participation is
limited to 250 vehicles per event. The
Pharmaceutical Collection does not require
anyone to pre-register and participation is
unlimited. Used Tire Collection participa-
tion is also unlimited; a maximum of 20 tires
will be accepted per participant and dis-
posal fees apply at the time of collection.

event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 8
a.m. to noon, at the Washington County
Hwy Facility, 900 Lang St. in West Bend.
