N
orth Dakota voters may need a
scorecard on Election Day 2014, as
they will vote on eight ballot mea-
sures. In order to help voters understand the
issues they will be voting on, the Young Pro-
fessionals Network will sponsor an informa-
tional session to be held at 7 p.m., Tursday,
Oct. 2, in the Student Center on the campus
of Valley City State University.
Tough eight issues will be decided Nov.
4, the evenings discussion will focus on
three: Measure #1, the Personhood issue;
Measure #3, which would replace the State
Board of Higher Education with a three-
person board; and Measure #5, Clean Water,
Wildlife and Parks.
Speakers who have been involved with the
issues will explain the three measures, with
a question and answer period to follow their
presentations. Sharon Buhr will moderate
the program.
Measure #1 Personhood, the Legal Im-
plications, will be discussed by Tom Fie-
biger, a graduate of St. Olaf College and the
UND School of Law. Fieberger has been
practicing law for 30 years, focusing his
practice on labor and employment issues
and discrimination cases, almost exclusively
representing workers. Fiebiger has worked
for the Department of Agriculture and the
Department of Defense and was elected to
the North Dakota Senate in 2006, serving on
the Judiciary and Transportation Commit-
tees during his four years in the Legislature.
No stranger to the issues raised by Mea-
sure #3, the question of abolishing the North
Dakota Board of Higher Education, Dr. El-
len Chafees distinguished career spans
institutional, system, policy and national
professional leadership in both public and
private higher education, as well as extensive
research and publication.
Chafee was President of Valley City State
University for 15 years and served nine of
those years simultaneously as president of
Mayville State University. Her leadership
developed an award-winning culture of in-
novation, change and accountability. She
then spent a year as President in Residence
at Harvard University. Previous positions in-
clude eight years as academic vice-chancel-
lor for the North Dakota University System
and fve years as director of organizational
studies at the National Center for Higher
Education Management Systems.
Associate Professor Dr. Bob Anderson,
who teaches classes in Fisheries and Wild-
life Science at VCSU, will present informa-
tion on Measure #5, Clean Water, Wildlife
and Parks. An avid birder, Dr. Anderson
also does environmental consulting for wind
farm and pipeline development.
Te Young Professionals Network is a re-
cently created Valley City group active in a
wide range of issues. Te meeting is free and
open to the public.

while camping out a couple
of weeks at Chautauqua
Park. Now we head upriver
from there to North Valley.
I remember well the old
bridge that was behind the
Ingstad residence when I
was a child. It was, in efect,
the Valley City community
fshing bridge. Many locals
fshed of this bridge
as well as upstream
along the west
bank. It was
excellent for
crappies, bass
and bullheads.
We kids fshed
there frequently.
As far as I have
been able to fnd out,
the owner of
this prop-
erty during
that time
from 1948
to the early
50s was
one William
Ermatinger.
Ermatinger
moved from Dazey to
North Valley in 1944. He
bought Whites Dairy at that
time. Next to nothing can
be found in local history
sources about either Er-
matinger or Whites Dairy.
Te Barnes County
Museum has only a

evidence of its
existence. Per-

MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS
By Dennis
STILLINGS
Tour: The Sheyenne
north to North Valley
This very popular tinted photograph was taken from the Hi-Line shortly after its completion. The North Valley Road
and its old iron bridge (built in the late 1890s) run parallel to the Interurban Railroad Line which was completed in
1905. Service between the NP Line in Valley City and the Soo Line in North Valley began in 1906. The Hi-Line was
completed in 1908. Note the lack of treesor much of anything elseon the right. (Dennis Stillings Collection)
A tinted triple-bridge photograph also from about the same time, which includes the
mysterious white-shirted man who is to be seen in several contemporary postcard
photographs. (Dennis Stillings Collection)
This photograph shows the stretch of the Sheyenne from the North Valley bridge
to where the river then turns north, past the Ingstad property and on to North Val-
ley. Once again the mysterious man in a white shirt makes his appearance. About a
quarter mile further north from this bend, the Ingstads built a walk-bridge at the place
where a sturdy timber bridge used to span the river. (Dennis Stillings Collection)
T
he book of Hebrews
begins with the words,
Long ago, at many
times and in many ways,
God spoke to our fathers by
the prophets, but in these
last days he has spoken to
us by His Son, whom he ap-
pointed the heir of all things,
through whom also he created
the world (Hebrews 1:1-2). In these verses
we have the reminder that God has used
His servants to communicate to His people.
Tese servants recorded their messages and
they have now been passed down to us for
our instruction and encouragement.
Now we might be a little worried when
thinking about the prophets in the Old
Testament. You might be thinking, I can
barely even pronounce the names, how
am I going to learn and be encouraged by
the words of this prophet from long ago?
However, when we recognize that God is
the one who spoke to the prophets and
they passed on His message we should not
deny the power of God to efectively com-
municate. We can trust this word as the
prophets spoke about the judgments and
woe and also as they spoke of the mercy of
God and the promise of the Messiah.
In the next few weeks, I plan to take a
look at one the prophets who ministered
around the year 750BC. His name is easy
to say, it is Amos. (No mention of anyone
named Andy in the book) Amos book
begins by setting the situation in which he
lived. It says, Te words of Amos, who
was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which
he saw concerning Israel in the days of

FAITHFULLY: From 8
Uzziah king of Judah and
in the days of Jeroboam the
son of Joash, king of Israel,
two years before the earth-
quake (Amos 1:1). Amos
was a prophet whose minis-
try was to a people who were
prosperous in the things of
this world; but had rebelled
against God in various ways.
To such a people Amos car-
ried a heavy burden, a word
of judgment.
Te prophets spoke of-
ten of judgment and Amos
was no exception. But as
we hear words of judgment
from him, or from a pastor
in a pulpit today, we should
consider that God has given
us a gif. It is a gif to hear
words of instruction, cor-
rection, and even rebuke.
For the people of Amos day
were sinners not unlike us.
We have a common need. In
addition to this, the sinners
of the past and today need to
hear of Gods promises.
In the weeks ahead we will
look more at the book of the
prophet Amos. We will see
the way in which he points
out the various sins of the
people. We will see the ines-
capable judgments of God.
We will also see the mercy
of God who does not forget
or neglect His people.

BABY
Artie and Baby are mother and son and a
bonded pair. They love to hang out with
anyone who will pay attention to them. When
they came to SVFA, they were being fostered
separately and a little anxious being apart,
but now that theyre back together, they are
happy little dogs. Because theyre a bonded
pair, were offering a discounted adoption fee
so they can spend the rest of their lives
together in their forever home. Both Baby, 8,
and Artie, 7, are house trained.

GEORGIA
If youre looking for the life of the
party, 4-year-old Georgia is your gal!
She loves people. Shes staying with
a dog and rabbit, and doesnt bother
either. Found abandoned in a house,
she over groomed herself, so her
belly is bald. But, that doesnt stop
her from hamming it up, and into
your heart!

afer purchasing it. I would much appreciate it if someone
could provide additional information and/or photographs
of the old fshing bridge, Whites Dairy or Ermatinger him-
self.
What we do know about Ermatinger from webfamily-
tree.com is of interest.
William Ermatinger was of Swiss, French and Indian ex-
traction and was descended from noted Ojibwa chiefains
Waubiajujauk and Matchikiwish, and counted among his
grandmothers the Huron woman Annennontak and the
Ojibwa women Wujust-and Madeline for whom Madeline
Island in Lake Superior was named. William was reared by
an old, blind Ojibwa woman known as Old Noko (from
Nokomis: Ojibwa word for grandmother). Indians fre-
quently visited their Eagleton home, and William became
fuent in the Ojibwa tongue.
His wife, Susan Keyes, was born at Leal, North Dakota
on March 2, 1895. Her parents were Edward Keyes and
Margaret Walks. Edward Keyes homesteaded at age 17 in
the Sheyenne Valley near Sibley. Trough her father, Susan
was directly descended from the nobility of Europe.
