SOCAP14 / CONFERENCE GUIDE 6
VOICES AND PLACES
Social impact investing as a model is working, but
the worlds poorest people still pay the most for
things like clean water and basic health services.
Thats a quote from Rajiv Shah the head of USAI D
that he delivered at an impact investing conference put on
by the Pope. We do have Raj with us this week, but not the
Pope. This year.
Though Raj was speaking about the developing world, the
same thing is true here in the United States. The poor pay
more. It costs more to be poor than it does to be well-off
in this country. Thats the way weve built it, on behalf of
the better off.
SOCAP itself has always been more internationally
focused than domestically. Partly, thats because more
impact investors are focused there, and because India
is becoming a place where the model is being proven at
scale. We will continue to focus internationally, in fact we
are expanding our mutual learning partnership with my
buddy Vineet Rai who, among other things, runs the
Sankalp social enterprise conferences in India and Kenya
so we can start to get a coherent picture of what is
working in impact investing, what a good social enterprise
looks like in its local context.
But another reason for the international focus has also
been partly because its easier for affluent Americans who
invest in impact funds to invest in fighting poverty that
affects Africans than it is to invest in solutions that work
for African Americans or other people of color.
Nobodys politics or prejudices get in the way of helping
in Africa. The same is not true of our inner cities, or our
immigrant communities.
Prejudices have also gotten in the way in gender issues.
Female-run early stage social enterprises are out
performing male-run enterprises by 15%, but are 40%
less likely to get funding. One fund has gotten around this
by simply putting a 10% bonus in due diligence around
women-run enterprises; you could call it a quota.
Their portfolio should outperform on a financial basis by
using that standard. Its one of those places where the
market and justice overlap, and they are smart to take
advantage of it. For the long term, they and we all
should evolve but here you can act now and evolve
later. The data says they will make more money than their
peers. With this kind of incentive, you can act right before
you get your head (or heart) right.
Another place that justice and the market overlap right
now is in financial inclusion. You can make a lot of money
reducing the cost of being poor, using smart phones, big
data, and an understanding of cultural anthropology: how
specific people in particular communities in particular
places make decisions. Many of these new customers
dont make decisions as individuals, as affluent white folks
do; they make decisions as communities, in groups.
If you sell the matriarch of the first-generation Filipino
immigrants who come first to the Sixth and Mission
neighborhood in San Francisco, youve probably sold
everybody in her apartment building. If you want to make
a positive impact on the lives of people whose lives
you dont yet understand, you have to learn to listen
respectfully.
It hasnt been the norm to teach listening to poor people
as the path to profit in B school, but thats what it takes
for this financial inclusion sector that is taking off like a
rocket. We need to make a huge cultural shift, to learn to
keep the positive impact in mind and keep checking in
that that is what is happening.
WELCOME 7
There is often a difference between our intent and our
impact; between our motivation and hope behind our
actions, and how our actions change the lives of those
around us.
Thats why our theme is vibrant communities this year;
positive impact has to do with relationships, it happens in
a specific place, and it happens to all of us if its going to
happen for any of us.
We are also excited that we have a major US-based
financial services company as a sponsor this year. This
is a company that isnt here just for CSR, or PR, showing
off pilot feel good projects around the edges. The big
financial services have real revenue targets around
software, services, and products that make money helping
reduce the cost of being poor. Its a place where justice
and the market overlap to potentially create great financial
returns.
We have great love and appreciation for our long-time
SOCAP sponsors, which have mostly been field-building
foundations like Halloran, Rockefeller, and groups like
the Omidyar Network. But now the financial service
corporates, like American Express, know there is a fortune
to be found in the base of the pyramid in the USA, and
they want to support what the people here are doing, too.
They want to invest in some of the startups you will be
seeing, and thats a good thing.
We may be acting our way into a new way of thinking, but
we are also consciously evolving and learning: changing
the thinking first and anticipating our actions to follow.
This year, we are excited to say that SOCAP is partnering
with both Cathy Clark of CASE (the Center for the
Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship) at Duke
University as well as Ben Thornleys new startup ICAP
Partners that will offer professional education for
impact fund managers and others from either investment
banks, financial service companies, and even some of the
new breed of foundations.
We know what it takes to be a good impact investor; there
are enough funds with enough of a track record that
we have figured out the characteristics and habits and
perspectives of the ones who outperform. Its simple. You
have to be able to live in two worlds: the mission-focused
world, and the financial return world. And not get them
confused. You have to be what they call bilingual. And we
can teach you what it takes to be effective.
The rise of professional education in the movement
which can be productized to make every angel investor
or mentor of a startup more effective is another sign
that this market is maturing. We created this conference
at the intersection of money and meaning, the place the
billionaires told us could not and should not exist, that
violated their two-pocket thinking beliefs, that you invest
for return and give for good.
This space, this market thats halfway between giving and
traditional return-focused investing, is as we always
said real, big, and growing. But now its also maturing.
We know what to do, and how to do it more than ever have
before.
Welcome to SOCAP14, our seventh global convening.
Lets do some good together.

VIBRANT COMMUNITIES IN ACTION
SOCAP is a big tent, and we are trying to make it even
more open and welcoming this year, both to satisfy the
early adopters who keep taking us deeper and maturing
the models, and to welcome the newcomers who find
resonance with this movement and are looking to find a
way in, or who may not yet even be sure this social capital
markets thing is for them. This section helps you connect
during SOCAP, in a variety of ways.
Please help us make these newcomers feel welcome,
remembering that we are all on a journey, and that the
power of change grows as we connect and welcome
others into our vibrant communities.

CONNECTIONS 11
IMPACT HUB @ SOCAP14
This is the 5th year that we will be building the Impact
Hub @ SOCAP, and the alignment on the theme couldnt
be stronger. Impact Hub is a global community of
entrepreneurs, activists, creatives, impact investors, and
professionals who are taking collaborative action toward
positive social and environmental change. Impact Hub is
first and foremost deeply rooted in place. With more
than 50 locations around the world, and 10 more opening
annually, access to the community is easy.
Within Impact Hubs thoughtfully designed shared work
and event spaces, you can make the connections you
need and find the resources required to build and scale
your business. By providing a physical infrastructure
for work, collaboration, convening, events, classes, and
workshops, each Impact Hub location builds a unique
culture and network of values-aligned professional
members at the local level. As a global platform consisting
of more than 10,000 members in 50 locations worldwide,
the Impact Hub Association provides members with
access to contacts, mentorship, global market insights,
and collaborative opportunities that accelerate their
success.
Impact Hub @ SOCAP14 will host Impact Hub founders
and makers from around the world for in-depth
discussions about what it takes to open an Impact Hub in
your town. Our federated model creates a decentralized
platform allowing anyone to build an Impact Hub for
their town or city. With it comes the support, not only of
a central global team, but of a network of passionate
founders and makers willing to share their experiences. In
the Bay Area, we are lucky to have 3 locations: Berkeley,
Oakland, and San Francisco. All three will be represented
at SOCAP14 in the Impact Hub space and we encourage
you to stop by and talk with us.
Impact Hub @ SOCAP is your space to relax, to eat, to
make art, to connect to other attendees, hold meetings,
join compelling conversations, or just fire off a few quick
emails. There are hosts at the entrance to help you find
what you need in the space, or to help navigate the
pavilion and conference. Perhaps you have been part of a
conversation between sessions that you would like to dive
into. If so, the hosts can help you find a suitable space for
this to happen.
The Impact Hub is the place for driving these
conversations towards collaborative action and solutions.
However, it does not have to end here at SOCAP14.
Impact Hubs are the locations for connecting to the global
SOCAP community 365 days a year. Connect with us at
impacthub.net.

Herman Miller and Impact Hub have a strongly
aligned partnership centered around space design for
collaboration. Herman Miller as global leaders in
design have brought their expertise to the Impact Hub
@ SOCAP as well as the Impact Hubs around the world.
Their century of experience has evolved Impact Hub
thinking around how to effectively and creatively bring
communities together to provide the best infrastructure for
combining social change with entrepreneurship. We invite
you to explore and enjoy the spaces we have co-created
here.
COMMUNITY CURATED DISCUSSIONS
If youre interested in connecting with a group of
attendees around a specific topic or focus area, or
continuing a conversation from Pathable, we invite you to
make it happen! Look for one of the Impact Hub Hosts
and ask them for help in finding a time and location to
host your discussion. Theyll help you get it onto our
SOCAP14 Pathable platform, so others can find you and
join the conversation.
We encourage you to use SOCAP14.pathable.com to
reach out to others who share your interests, and let
them know about the time youve arranged. You can also
arrange a more casual meeting time during breakfast or
lunch in the Impact Hub.

CONNECT WITH ART
The Lexicon of Sustainability
TM
is bringing street art to
SOCAP14. With mounted information artworks on black
and white posters, you can add colors, open up the
creative and intuitive side of your brain, paint, and share
with the community. As soon as theyre painted, well be
hanging the painted posters in a gallery for all to see, so
come join us near the stage at Impact Hub @ SOCAP.
GOOGLE IMPACT CHALLENGE LOUNGE
This year, weve partnered with Google to celebrate the
phenomenal ways that community organizations are
working in the Bay Area and together weve created a
lounge that celebrates this local impact. In the lounge,
youll find spotlights on great Bay Area non-profits.
Google.org program managers will be there hosting
conversations throughout the conference. Swing by, grab
a cup of coffee, talk about community building and social
impact, and meet some of the winners of Googles Bay
Area Impact Challenge.
#SOCENT CENTRAL
If you are an entrepreneur, or want to connect with some,
make your way back to the lounge with the #SOCENT
Central banner above it. There youll find a schedule
of office hours and workshops of interest to social
entrepreneurs, and a place to meet with entrepreneurs
throughout the conference. Well also post the most up-
to-date schedule of our entrepreneur Innovation
Showcases and pitch sessions here, as well as on

MARKETPLACE
SOCAP14 is proud to welcome Lydali as our conference
marketplace. Lydali (lydali.com) is an e-commerce website
that sells jewelry, accessories, and home goods from
artisan groups around the world. Lydalis mission is to
share beautiful, ethical products and the stories of the
artisans and designers who make them. With curated
products made by artisans in 28 different countries, Lydali
is working to create a new way of shopping by connecting
consumers with the people who make their products.
Lydali is located in the Impact Hub @ SOCAP and will be
open whenever the Impact Hub is open.
Several books relevant to SOCAP14 and many
by speakers at SOCAP will also be offered in the
marketplace. Theyre supplied by Better World Books,
a for-profit social enterprise that collects and sells
books online, with each sale generating funds for
literacy initiatives in the US and around the world
(betterworldbooks.com).
SOCAP WELCOMES THE WORLD!

GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES LEAD TO
24 CHAPTERS ENDING HUNGER
SOCAP is proud to continue our collaboration with
FeelGood a movement of passionate, committed youth
turning their college experiences into a time of effective
global action. Founded in 2005 by students of UT Austin,
their idea was to offer fellow students grilled cheese
sandwiches in exchange for a donation, and invest the
proceeds in organizations with a proven track record of
sustainable, gender-based hunger-eradication. Every
penny FeelGood raises goes directly toward Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) that aim to end world hunger.
They have now donated more than $1.6 million to the
SDGs, have 24 active chapters, have amassed 164,000
volunteer hours, and served nearly 200,000 grilled cheese
sandwiches over some amazing conversations about
hunger and how we can end it. Enjoy yours on Wednesday
at the afternoon break!
ALTER ECOS CHOCOLATE: TASTE POSITIVE &
CARBON NEGATIVE
Alter Ecos delicious chocolate truffles are not only fair
trade, they are carbon negative because the company has
planted more than two million trees within their supply
chain through a partnership with ACOPAGRO cooperative.
So, your waistline can be let out while your footprint goes
down. Whats more, their packaging is the first of its kind,
a groundbreaking compostable wrapper made of birch and
eucalyptus and printed with non-toxic ink that will fully
decompose in backyards and compost bins. Guilt-free
chocolate that melts in your mouth. Look for the truffles at
breaks throughout the conference.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE A STAND
With the power of social media, ten-year-old Vivienne Harr
launched one lemonade stand into a global movement to
combat child slavery. Make a Stand, a socially innovative
lemonade company, is a leading example of a new wave of
hybrid benefit corporations dedicated to making charity
their sales pitch. The company now sells their fair trade,
organic lemon-aid online and in stores all over the world,
dedicating five-percent of all gross revenues to leading
organizations working to eradicate child slavery worldwide.
In 2013, Twitter gave Vivienne the honor of ringing the bell
at their I PO because they believe she is a symbol of how
Twitter can be used to change the world. Stop by the Make
a Stand lemon-aid stand on Wednesday and buy some
lemon-aid to support this amazing young entrepreneur,
and be sure to hear Vivienne speak Wednesday evening.

SOCAP14
HALLORAN PHILANTHROPIES AND SOCAP
CELEBRATING ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN OUR
SEVENTH YEAR!
In 2008, SOCAP received its first catalytic grant from
Halloran Philanthropies. Halloran took a chance on a
raw startup and made the first SOCAP happen. It was
Hallorans belief that the market at the intersection of
money and meaning was real and big and growing that
caused them to make a bet on us. Every successful
entrepreneurial organization has this first relationship, the
partner who believes in the mission despite the enormous
task ahead. The legacy of this support continues on
with Halloran Philanthropies support once again of
the entrepreneur program and entrepreneur housing
at SOCAP. The program ensures that 150 top notch
entrepreneurs can attend the event and that they receive
a program that supports them having a great SOCAP
experience. Whether you are an entrepreneur imagining
the future of your startup, or an investor scoping out your
next investments, we hope that you gain the rewarding
experience of partnering and committing to continue to
support the businesses that build a better world.
Join us in the opening session on Wednesday as we
salute this catalytic SOCAP Partner.
THE FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITY IN FINANCIAL
INCLUSION; WHEN JUSTICE AND THE MARKET
OVERLAP
Spent: Looking for Change is a film about everyday
Americans without the financial options most of us take
for granted and the startups giving them a chance to get
on their feet. Sponsored by American Express to help
improve financial inclusion in the US, Spent is produced
by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim,
directed by Derek Doneen, and narrated by Tyler Perry. Its
time for change. New technology, new ideas, and helping
entrepreneurs see the economic opportunity in financial
inclusion can help make managing money simple and
more affordable for the poor.
MENTOR CAPITAL FOR GAME CHANGERS
The Gratitude Network led by Randy Haykin is a
new partner for SOCAP this year. The Gratitude Network
searches for the worlds greatest social entrepreneurs
who demonstrate an innovative business model,
products, services, or dynamic leadership to create a
compelling vision for sustainable social change. To find
game-changing entrepreneurs, Gratitude partners with
other firms in venture philanthropy, large humanitarian
organizations (who already have the reach into most
countries) and universities (who are turning up some of
the most innovative new entrepreneurs). The Gratitude
Network is awarding prizes from the SOCAP stage this
year and will be offering ongoing mentoring to outstanding
entrepreneurs in the fields of education, community
development, and global health. In the Thursday afternoon
session, winners will receive Gratitude Awards one by
choice of the judges, and one Peoples Choice award by
audience vote.

STRATEGIC DESIGN FOR A GOOD CAUSE:
ELEFINT DESIGNS
At Elefint Designs, we partner with good causes, and
we help them succeed by offering our knowledge of
strategy and design. Design is a humanization process
that allows you to better connect with your audiences, and
must be informed by definitive strategy and objectives.
Strategic design is a powerful tool for making the world
a better place. So, we have partnered with SOCAP again
to showcase the importance of design through the
development of the conference identity, an interactive
exhibit, and more!
At the Omidyar Network, we create a world of positive
returns by investing in entrepreneurs and their visionary
ideas. Were a philanthropic investment firm, established
in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam
Omidyar. Our work is driven by the fundamental belief
that people are inherently capable, but too often they lack
opportunity. Through grantmaking and impact investing,
we work to create opportunities for people to improve
their own lives, their communities, and the world around
them.
This kind of change calls for applying different types of
tools to solve problems and we deploy flexible capital:
making both grants to support non-profit organizations
and impact investments to grow for-profit businesses.
We invest at the early stages in promising ideas with the
potential to have broad-scale, sector-level impact. We
invest in five key areas we believe are building blocks
for thriving communities: consumer Internet and mobile,
education, financial inclusion, government transparency,
and property rights.
Headquartered in Silicon Valley, Omidyar Network
has offices in Johannesburg, London, Mumbai, and
Washington, D.C.

ventures need more than the initial visionary the person
who sells the great idea. They also need the second-in-
command, the person who really makes it happen builds
the team, weaves together all the moving parts and drives

to launch Gearbox: a first-of-its-kind professional
engineering and prototyping space in Nairobi, Kenya.
Gearbox fills a critical need for a design and prototyping
space in East Africa. Throughout the region, there is
a growing trend wherein designers, engineers, and
entrepreneurs are constrained by lack of skills training
and access to professional quality tools and materials.
As a result, the best local talent has often been forced to
design and develop abroad, which increases costs, delays
innovation and spurs brain drain to the region.
We are thrilled to host a prototype of a new model
to inspire thoughtful design and positive change at
SOCAP14. Visit Make:Impact Station in the Impact Hub
@ SOCAP where you can witness some of the exciting
innovations that are game-changing for the developing
world and are developed at maker spaces like Gearbox
and TechShop. Youll also be able to check out a 3D
printer!

BRCK, Sanergy, Gearbox, Embrace, BioLite

VIBRANT COMMUNITIES
IN CONTENT
Since SOCAP13, the outpouring of amazing work
happening at the intersection of money and meaning is
clear. The breadth and depth of progress made the job of
the SOCAP14 content team both exciting and challenging.
There are so many new developments to share with you:
updates as the impact sector learns and adjusts, new and
emerging areas of practice for those ready to go deep,
as well as some of the entry-level sessions for those
starting to explore the space as it continues to grow.
The momentum we see this year comes from many
different communities of practice: institutions,
partnerships, and individuals learning from experience as
impact investing matures, harvesting and sharing lessons
learned; the expansion of interest in impact investing as
larger financial institutions get serious about meeting
customer demand for impact investment products; the
greater interest from corporations as they extend more
into partnerships with social enterprises. Part of the power
of the growth comes as more, different communities of
practice are intersecting, banding together, and forming
new collaborations in the sector. Field builders and
practitioners of all stripes and global geographies come
together here at SOCAP to share their best practices and
explore new possibilities for collaboration.
The SOCAP team brings examples to the stage of the
work YOU are doing with the intention to inspire,
engage, and challenge us all for the work still ahead.
Together, we will ignite more vibrant communities.

#Real Assets
Within Impact Investing, real assets such as timber,
farmland, and fisheries are just a few of the tangible
assets that have huge, positive financial, social, and
environmental potential and are attracting growing
attention from institutional and individual investors
building impact portfolios. Charting the path to scale,
including policy considerations, creative financing models,
and preserving impact at exit, is a challenge that is perfect
for the SOCAP community.

Explore market opportunities in building more sustainable
and resilient food systems. We will look globally at how
impact investment can support the large market shifts
necessary to support sustainable food systems in the face
of population growth and climate change. We will also
zoom in on the local level to understand the connections
of food, health, and economic empowerment, and the gaps
and opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, and investors
within the food system.

Building from last years theme and our recent SOCAP
Health conference, we look at the challenges and
opportunities of creating better health outcomes for
people globally. Innovative approaches to improving health
outcomes through low-cost interventions are on the verge
of unprecedented scale and impact. Systems and solutions
from the developing world are being used to reform a
costly US health and medical care system, while new
technologies and creative financing are extending care to
previously underserved populations around the world.

Unique solutions spring from engaging the distinct
challenges, assets, and stakeholders of a city or
community. Where and how does place matter? How can
communities find strengths and create what they need
to thrive? Though they are often context-dependent,
exploring place-based innovations can inspire each of
us to see the scope of tremendous opportunities of the
places where we aim to have an impact.

The sharing economy represents a shift towards a
new community-driven economic model, with people
collaborating, sharing, and renting access to goods
and services, rather than simple ownership. How do
we ensure that accessibility and equitability are at the
foundation of this new market system? What types of
community-sourced capital and governance do startups
in the collaborative economy need? And what are the
corresponding investment models and opportunities?

Wildcard sessions are those that dont fit particularly
within another theme, but are important or emerging
conversations. Though they may be out-of-the-box and as
yet undefined in the sector, we find its important to take
note of these discussions on the edge. This year, we have
several sessions focused on cross-sector partnerships in
the Wildcard theme.

50 years ago, venture capitalists
and entrepreneurs joined together
in Silicon Valley to build a culture of
innovation and wealth creation. The ethos of
these pioneers was based on disrupting, not
protecting, the status quo. In Latin America,
entrepreneurs are emerging with a similar
mission, but with a focus on creating positive
social and environmental impact. We invite you

Draper.

IMPACT INVESTING IN 2014: THE STATE
OF THE FIELD
60 minute session / Cowell Theater
As impact investing continues to attract
a larger and more diverse audience,
Fran Seegull and Julia Sze will address
the state of the field. Their scope includes key
driving forces that create investment opportunity
for financial, social, and environmental return; an
overview of the landscape of players; key myths,
successes, opportunities, and barriers to scale;
as well as an industry outlook. The session is
designed for those new to impact investing as
well as those more experienced in the practice.

BUILDING A NEW ECONOMY: HOW DOES

60 minute session / Golden Gate
Building the case for a more
compassionate, sustainable, and place-
based economy, Judy Wicks describes
the value of investing in businesses that grow
deeper in their communities to build local self-
reliance and resilience, as well as greater health
and happiness. With examples from her own
career, she shows how cooperation, sharing,
and making business decisions with a balance
of head and heart are necessary to address the
urgent challenges of our time.

HEALTH: ITS WHERE YOU LIVE
60 minute session / Southside Theater

Your postal code affects your health
more than your genetic code. People
in different neighborhoods, states,
and countries can have vastly different life
expectancies and health outcomes with
similar access to health care. Violence, access
to clean water, educational and employment
opportunities all affect health outcomes.
Understanding these social determinants of
health can lead to innovation and opportunities,

most impact bang for the buck? Hear from a
variety of stakeholders as we define scale in
practical terms, explain scale-readiness, and

its especially so with financial products
because of a lack of standard metrics

60 minute session / C260
Real assets provide an opportunity
to replace existing investments with
high-impact options. This session will
examine the global private real assets space
and discuss how land-based sectors (i.e., timber,
ranching, and agriculture) advance sustainability
and conservation goals. We will present real
world examples of these current investment
vehicles and discuss appropriate considerations
for adding them to your portfolio.

OR RESILIENT SYSTEMS?
60 minute session / Marina
Just as insights from psychology and
biology are illuminating markers of
resilience in individuals, more and more
businesses and social enterprises are looking
to create and support systems that allow people
and communities to respond to adversity in
healthy ways. How does individual resilience
bridge to community resilience and vice versa?

With social, environmental, and
economic impact, potential to scale,
and a real asset to anchor the
investment, sustainable agriculture seems like
a clear choice for impact investors. However,
there are many complex questions just below
the surface. Which has greater impact: organic

THE PREVENTION PARADOX: TACKLING
BARRIERS TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS
60 minute session / Cowell Theater
The model for US health and medical
care has been sick care: managing
and treating diagnosed illnesses rather
than supporting individuals in maintaining
healthy lifestyles. Funding and financial
incentives built around treatment of chronic
diseases constrain medical resources that could
support prevention approaches before the onset
of these conditions. How can we both create
effective behavior-changing interventions that
support health and wellness AND shift the
system to have these tools valued, deployed,

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE
INVESTMENT-READY?
60 minute session / C260
Social entrepreneurs require capital
to create impact, and impact investors
with capital are looking for investment
ready deals. But how can investment readiness
be measured and understood by both
entrepreneurs and investors? The Capability
Assessment Matrix (CAM) is a benchmarking
tool for social enterprises, designed to guide
and measure where an enterprise is along the
continuum of conception to implementation,
which also helps inform how investors evaluate
if a social enterprise is investment ready.

BJ HARDEN JONES
Copy Editor
BJs passion in life revolves around
developing and sharing clarity: the
inner clarity (self-awareness) that
naturally generates outer clarity
(worldview). Her service springs from
kindness and effectiveness. What is loving,
what works most optimally, what is true? She guides
clients through these simple questions to help establish
higher orders of coherence. As the daughter of SOCAP
founders Kevin Jones and Rosa Lee Harden, she has
been to every SOCAP conference until this year and
worked as copy editor for the program book most of those
years. Her most recent project with her partner Aaron is
co-luminate an Urban Hub for Transformational Culture
(co-luminate.com).
ROSA LEE HARDEN
Co-Founder & Executive Producer
As one of the original founders of the
SOCAP conference, Rosa Lee has
always been the person to keep the
focus shining on the meaning street of
the intersection of money and meaning.
An Episcopal priest for 15 years, she also serves at
the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, NC, leading
conversations there about how faith connects to all of
who we are, and asking questions about the moral and
ethical implications of how we spend and invest our
money. This past year she added the Wild Goose Festival
to her producing portfolio. The Goose brings together
spirituality, justice, and the arts at a 2,000-person event
in the woods in Western North Carolina. She, along with
Kevin Jones and Tim Soerens, is producing a faith-based
event on Neighborhood Economics in Louisville, Kentucky
in November.
KEVIN JONES
Co-Founder & Convener
The idea for SOCAP came to Kevin
because he realized the prevailing
mode of creating convenings in the
market thats arisen in the space
between giving and investing was fatally
flawed. The other events back in 2006 wanted to kickstart
the market for investing in social enterprise by getting
the right people in the room. Kevin realized it was the
valuable stranger the unlikely ally that you need
to design for, in order to create the vitality that the best
interdisciplinary events foment. That design principle
has led SOCAP to sell out and grow every year, until it
is nearly four times the size of the original Social Capital
Markets gathering in 2008. Kevin is also a co-founder of
SOCAP14 / CONFERENCE GUIDE 88
the Impact Hubs in San Francisco, Berkeley, Philadelphia,
TriBeCa, and DC. He is a member of the General
Partnership of Reinventure Capital, which invests at the
intersection of biodiversity and inclusion, and through
Good Capital he invests in individual companies, such as
Startgrid, an online platform that manages the relationship
between an entrepreneur and her mentors and advisors.
ELIZABETH KRUEGER
Content Director
Elizabeth has been part of SOCAP
since 2009, and brings experience from
traditional financial services, consulting
and complex project management,
most recently as Director of Content for
the SOCAP and Mission Hub team. In that capacity, she
led production of SHARE and SOCAP Health events in
2014, and oversaw content and project management for
SOCAP14. After SOCAP this year, shell be leaving for her
next adventure in the social capital markets.
MIA LAUTER
Volunteer Coordinator
Mia manages the volunteers at SOCAP
and has coordinated the volunteer
program at SOCAP13, SHARE and
SOCAP Health. After several years
working special events in LA, she
relocated to Madrid, Spain for 2 years, learning
Spanish and perfecting the art of eating a big lunch at
2pm. She later returned stateside to work in international
exchange programs through several universities in San
Francisco. She easily made the decision to return to the

SOCAP14 / CONFERENCE GUIDE 92
TRANSPARENCY @ SOCAP14
For the second year, SOCAP has engaged Groundswell
Marketing to help produce our events. One of the high
priorities we set with the Groundswell team is to help us
produce as sustainable a conference as possible. Below
are some of the ways we have found to do that together.
GROUNDSWELL MARKETING
groundswellmktg.com
As Groundswell Marketing, we love working with SOCAP
because what matters to us matters to them, too. Together
we source as much as we possibly can from our partners
who are following sustainable practices. Groundswell
Marketing is an event production firm specializing in
Sustainable Tradeshows and Conferences. Our clientele
ranges from startup enterprises to the Fortune 500. We
tailor our services for every project, offering strategy,
design, staffing, and production expertise. We are a Bay
Area Certified Green Business, and are committed to
helping our clients produce successful programs with
triple bottom line results.
FORT MASON CENTER
fortmason.org
SOCAP14 returns for a seventh year to its dynamic
waterfront home at Fort Mason Center, a unique
destination for thought-provoking programs, events,
and organizations that support and reflect the evolving
cultural fabric of San Francisco. The campus is a National
Historic Landmark and part of the Golden Gate National
Recreation Area, the countrys largest urban national
park. This year the Herbst Building has reopened with an
impressive solar array that adds to Fort Masons already
huge commitment to the environment.
ASHBURY IMAGES
ashburyimages.org
This year, SOCAP volunteers and staff are wearing t-shirts
from Ashbury Images. Ashbury Images rebuilds lives one
shirt at a time by providing paid employment, job training,
and supportive services to at-risk youth recovering
from poverty, substance abuse, and homelessness.
Ashbury Images is part of New Door Ventures, a youth
development social enterprise (newdoor.org).

U.S. PURE WATER
uspurewater.com
The water in Festival comes from U.S. Pure Water
Corporation. The full spectrum water treatment service
and sales companys aim is to reduce plastic waste &
the use of fossil fuels in the delivery and production of
plastic bottles, by providing equipment that treats at the
point-of-use (POU) rather than at a treatment plant far
away. USPW converted SF City & County to POU systems,
and is helping to green events, preventing hundreds of
thousands of bottles from landing in the waste stream.
SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATION CORPS
sfcc.org/recycling.html
SOCAP and SFCC couldnt do it without you! All event
waste at Fort Mason Center is managed by the San
Francisco Conservation Corps with an aim toward landfill
diversion and resource recovery. Following SOCAP11,
we received this update from SFCC: We were able to
produce a resource recovery / landfill diversion rate of
96.19%, which means that only 3.81% of the events total
generated waste of 11,799.72 lbs is headed to landfill.
These great numbers could not have been achieved
without your support and cooperation in striving for a
zero waste event. SOCAP is absolutely one of, if not the
greenest event that we do. It is obvious that the SOCAP
producers and attendees have a real interest in putting on
as green an event as possible, which is extremely rare and
a pleasure for us to be involved in.
