Project No 5.1
Determining effect of Saddle spacing on Stability of Horizontal Pressure Vessel using FEA

Introduction:
Buffer lines in an oil refinery need to hold large quantities of oil to be made available as per process
requirements. Due to this the vessels made to store the oil turn out to be large and if designed as a
horizontal vessel, their length is very big.

Due to this such vessels are usually supported by more than 2 saddles. However nozzle positions
sometimes create an obstruction to create equidistant spacing of saddle supports. In such cases saddles
get grouped together and this results in unsymmetrical support

Objective
The objective of the project is to understand how unsymmetrical support spacing affects the stability
of the vessel
Secondary objective is to understand that if Moving saddles are placed unsymmetrical what are the
implications of it.
Thirdly is there any stability advantage in using 4 saddles instead of 3.

Project No 5.2
Finite Element (FE) analysis of Pressure Vessels with reactant columns (multiple) embedded in them

Introduction
Chemical processes are widely carried out by using flow over catalysts. Reactant columns are
basically large columns filled with catalyst which flush out chemicals and speed up the chemical
reaction in the process
Reactant columns are perforated to allow flow of chemicals, however they also operate at high
pressure. This creates a design challenge of balancing pressure, weight, and geometry.

Objective
The objectives are
Design and analysis of reactant column pressure vessel
Analyzing effect of hole spacing on stresses
Optimizing the assembly to deliver stable design as per ASME sec VIII div 2

Project no 5.3
Analyzing effect of Void Distribution on frequency of shaft

Introduction
Voids are internal imperfections in shafts generated due to unregulated manufacturing processes.
However in certain low load applications or in cases where shafts serve an aesthetic purpose and have
less functional value, such shafts are utilized as cost saving options
However through non-functional, if these shafts are exposed to an environment of vibration, they
tend to vibrate and create a disturbing sound.
The voids thus need to be classified so that such sounds can be eliminated from the system

Objective
The objectives of the project are
To understand effect of void presence on natural frequency of shaft
Analyze the effect of spacing between two adjacent voids on the frequency of the shaft
Identify the threshold size beyond which there will be certain rejection of the component

Quantifying the role of ellipsoidal inclusion spacing on the performance of the composite

Introduction
Particulate composites utilize ellipsoidal inclusions as reinforcement members to provide strength to
the composite
The size of inclusion, its dimensions, and spacing between two adjacent inclusions determines the
properties of the composite
Hence we need to understand if two inclusions are closely spaced is there a benefit in terms of
strength, or is there a certain optimum spacing beyond which the benefit of having inclusions lapses

Objective
The objective of the project is to understand the role of inclusions in the characteristics of the
composites
Analyzing and Optimizing the spacing between inclusions to provide maximum strength to the
composites

Finite Element Analysis based analysis split dish reactor
Introduction
Dish reactors are pressure vessels in which reaction is carried out by storing one chemical in a large
dish, and the other chemical flows over it at high pressures,
This creates an instantaneous reaction mechanism, which is useful in getting a consistent product

Objective
The Objective of the project is to simulate dish reaction for operation conditions
Implement the design of split dish reactor
Conform the design to the requirements of ASME code

ASME code, Dish reactor

2. The Student should go through the abstracts, do some background study, and primarily
identify the project with which they have maximum interest.
3. For obtaining further data, and allotment of project, the Student must submit a letter of
introduction from their college, indicating the project title, and a commitment that the data
made available for the project will be used only for academic purposes
4. Kindly note that Testing is done for all projects and FEA results should not have more than 5
% variation to get accepted
5. The Student cannot be Physically present for the test
6. However, all testing reports will be provided by the company, in accordance with Intellectual
property standards of the client.
7. Note that Projects are allotted on a First Come First Serve Basis.
8. Clash of Projects is not allowed within the same Universities
9. Students from different Universities may work on the same project, however, each student
will have a unique contribution to the project and will have to work individually for
completion of the project.
10. Each Student is ideally expected to present an International Conference paper or a Journal
