Introduction

Technology has become a part of everyones life. It makes people to work easier and
more effective. In the Philippines, technology has become useful for many Filipinos. Early
generations are being influence with the use of advance technology. With a competitive world
where almost everything work by technology, a close competition of products have been
grown. Although Philippines belongs to a third country, many of the Filipinos are being updated
with the new and advance use of different technology.
One of the technology that most people adapted is known as Phablets. A Phablets is a
class of mobile device designed to combine or straddle the functions of a smartphone and
tablet. It has characterized by the use of large screens, typically with a diagonal size between 5
to 6.9 inches (130 to 180 mm), which complement screen-intensive activity such as mobile web
browsing and multimedia viewing. Phablets may also include software optimized for an integral
self-storing stylus to facilitate sketching, note-taking and annotation. It started to gain real
interest in January 2012. Tech journalist Ian Scales used the word Phablets to describe the Dell
Streak in a Telecom TV article back in 2010. But on Twitter, Dan Warren of GSMA claims that it
was him who first coined the term.
In 1993, when the world was introduced to the hilariously ugly EO Personal
Communicator. It did, strictly speaking, combine some tablet and phone functions. A prehistoric
smartphone of sorts, at the time when everyone was listening to Whitney Houstons I Will
Always Love You. At the year 2007, the HTC Advantage hit the scene. The device, running on
Windows Mobile, could probably lay claim to being the first proper Phablets. But heavily

purchase literally and figuratively, it weighed almost a pound. The 2010 Dell Streak was
probably the first device to actually be called a Phablets, but it failed miserably on every count.
In the Philippines, Phablets devices have different model. It aides the needs to answer
the demand of many users to make all-in-one the features of phone and tablet. Of the growing
number of population, the advance technology had also grown and shows a largest impact to
the market.

History of Phablets

Decades after brick-sized mobile phones went the way of the cassette tape, an
unsuspected trend has taken the market by storm: big phones are back! This time, consumer
preferences for large screen sizes have led the way to the phablet category: mobile phones
that are smaller than a tablet but bigger than a typical smartphone. It is generally agreed that a
phablet, by definition, has a screen size between five and seven inches (12.7 cm to 17.53 cm),
measured diagonally. A phablet is a computing device with a screen size between four-and-a-
half and seven inches, measured diagonally. As the name implies, the device is essentially a
tablet that also functions as a phone. However, the smaller size makes it easier for users to
carry them around in pockets or small bags, as is customary with smartphones but less common
with tablets. In addition to a phone, a phablet usually has all the features of a tablet, such as a
touch screen, a virtual keyboard, a mobile operating system and browser, an integrated
camera/webcam and customized apps. Phablet adoption has grown steadily worldwide with
IDC reporting 189 million shipments in 2013, totaling 18.7% of smartphone shipments. That was
up from 29.7 million shipments in 2012 and 1.2 million in 2011, when Samsung first released its
Galaxy Note phablet.
In a nutshell, Phablets combine the features and functionality of a smartphone with the
bigger size and larger screen of a tablet. Phablets as we know them were arguably first
introduced with Samsungs Note range: Android-powered devices packing a screen of 5.5-
inches and upwards. When the Galaxy Note was announced at the IFA 2011, it was the first
device of its kind to offer a screen size falling somewhere between that of a typical smartphone
and a larger tablet. It also offered its own stylus, called the S-Pen, for even smoother use. The

latter is a class of phones with screen sizes that range between 5 to 7 inches and carry the
combined functionality of both a smartphone and a tablet. A portmanteau of the words phone
and tablet, the mixture of these became popular in 2012 with the release of Samsung Galaxy
Note. As in case of Samsungs Galaxy Note Series, a Phablets may have optimized software that
provides it with enhanced features. Typically designed for multimedia consumption and mobile
web access, it carries the several savvy features like a touch screen, a virtual keyboard, a good
system browser and a camera. The term Phablets is actually the result of phone+tablet. Today,
an average Phablets size has gone up from 5.5 inches to almost about 6 inches. This is because
further reduction in bezel thickness; the part that surrounds your phones screen, which is
usually of no use to the end user. Other recent Phablets includes Sony Xperia Z Ultra, HTC One
Max, Nokia Lumia 1520, and Huawei Ascend Mate. Phablets attempts to give you the best of
both tablets and phones worlds. Well there is no standard definition of Phablets, but generally
they are devices having common features with screen size ranging from 5.0 to 6.9 inches (thus
are smaller than a tablet but larger than a phone). Phablets has Bigger Screen that provides a
greater screen so that peoples who spend too much time in phones may find it quiet portable
and easy to read the content. It has also well for content creation in writing a long mail or
memo, or even editing images/video becomes handy coz of its large space. Phablets plays
double Role and Portability.

software optimized for an integral self-storing stylus to facilitate sketching, note-taking and
annotation. In January 2013, IHS reported that 25.6 million phablet devices were sold in 2012
and estimated that these figures would grow to 60.4 million in 2013, and 146 million by 2016.
Barclays projected sales of phablets rising from 27 million in 2012 to 230 million in 2015. In
September 2013 International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that its research indicated that
phablet size smartphones "overtook shipments of both laptops and tablets in Asia in the second
quarter of 2013." According to an IHS report of January 2013, 25.6 million such devices were
sold in 2012 and it was estimated that by the end of 2013, the figures would rise to 60.4 million.
Barclays predicts that the sales of these devices would rise from 26 million to 230 million in
2015, and Reuters has already called 2013 as the Year of the Phablet that again implies that
this device is not going out anytime soon. The phablets were originally made for Asia and other
emerging markets of the developing countries. Since these countries constituted of large
population that cannot afford a smartphone and a tablet together, their woes were addressed
through phablets. Device makers shipped 25.2 million phablets in Asia/Pacific excluding Japan
(APEJ) in the second quarter of 2013, compared with 12.6 million tablets, and 12.7 million
laptops. Phablets made a significant jump, up by 100 percent from the previous quarter, and up
620 percent compared to the same quarter in 2012. Phablets was first started as a trend driven
by mature markets like South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore and these markets continue to
rise. Analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC), which conducted the research, said that
the growth of phablets was primarily due to adoption in emerging markets, where consumers
like to have calling capabilities combined with a better browsing and multimedia experience.

According to the PC Magazine, the earliest devices in the history of the phablet concept
is called AT & T EO 440, in the 1993 "was the first true phablet", and followed by the following
devices such as HTC Advantage (5.0 inch screen) and Nokia N810WiMAX Edition (4.13" screen)
in the year 2007, Verizon Hub (7.0" screen) in the year 2009, LG GW990 (4.8" screen) and Dell
Streak (5.0" screen) in the year 2010, Dell Streak 7 (7.0" screen) and Acer Iconia Smart (4.8"
screen) and Samsung Galaxy Player 5 (5.0" screen) and Pantech Pocket and Samsung Galaxy
Note (5.3" screen) in the year 2011 and Nokia Lumia 1520 (6" screen) in the year 2013. In a
2013 analysis, Engadget identified dropping screen prices, increasing screen power efficiency,
increasing battery life and the evolving importance of multimedia viewing as critical factors in
the popularity of the phablet. In 2012, Forbes magazine noted that while most clothing cannot
hold a typical tablet computer, men's clothing in particular could and may well adapt to
accommodate phablets. Doug Conklyn, vice president of global design for Dockers told Fox
News said the company reworked the size of its pants pockets "to accommodate the growing
size of smartphones."

Implication of Phablets
Advantage
The advantages of using Phablets over other regular smartphones are the following;
first, it could display a better image because of its extra available space, second it has a better
utilization of pixels, third it has a much better multimedia performance, fourth it has better
processors as compared to smartphones, fifth it has a better readability due to enough spacing
between words, sixth it allows for a more realistic method of typing because of its bigger
keyboard, seventh it has a much better for better for video calls due to the extra available
space.
Another benefit of Phablets is the screen. If you arent satisfied with your 5-inch screen
and think that an inch more would have been better, then go for a phablet since it will have a
bigger screen size than a phone. Its next benefit is the portability. If you have a tablet, then
your jeans pockets are not enough to hold it. Forbes recently remarked that while most
clothing can be short for holding these devices, mens clothing could be enough for having this.
A tablet does require a separate carrying bag, or it will make you carry a bigger bag then your
usual smaller ones. But, a phablet makes it easy for you to carry it in your hands. The next good
thing about a phablet is that you can make a call from it and that too without much
complication. While tablets are still not considered to be good at voice calls, the phablets can
lower this problem.

In addition to these ones, a phablet gives you more efficiency than a smartphone along
with increased battery life and better multimedia experience and web surfing. All these sounds
very good and attractive but, the cons still remain to be glanced. Phablets contributes fun for
users. It is an ideal technology for playing games, using apps and watching media. There are
several reasons why people choose to used Phablets simply because of its screen size that
makes ideal for commuters and big media users to watch their favorites films, TV programmes
and YouTube clips, another is that Phablets has Stylus/S-Pen technology makes for smooth and
seamless interactivity perfect for gamers and heavy media users who want to access content
on the go. Many business people and professionals find them handy for storing all their
information and pulling up important documents and spreadsheets on the move.

Disadvantage
The disadvantage of Phablets over regular smartphones are the following; first it has a
limited one handed usage due to the size, weight and center of gravity, second it is difficult to
carry due to the large size, third it looks awkward given the much larger size, fourth it has a
longer charging duration due to the bigger battery, fifth it has a built-in batteries which is not
replaceable. For several users, they found Phablets as too big and unwieldy to handle. People
also observe that the sheer size can make storage difficult in comparison to sleeker, more
streamlined smartphones. They also found the technology having a slower hand typing, prone
to snatchers, it has a bigger screen and high price market, bulky and too small to be a proper
tablet.

Market Impact of Phablets
In January 2013, IHS reported that 25.6 million phablet devices were sold in 2012 and
estimated that these figures would grow to 60.4 million in 2013, and 146 million by 2016.

September 2013 International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that its research indicated that
phablet size smartphones "overtook shipments of both laptops and tablets in Asia in the second
quarter of 2013." Whilst unveiling the aforementioned Ascend Mate, Huawei CEO Richard Yu
considered the phablet to be the future of smartphones due to their "all-in-one" nature.
In a 2013 analysis, Engadget identified dropping screen prices, increasing screen power
efficiency, increasing battery life and the evolving importance of multimedia viewing as critical
factors in the popularity of the phablet. In 2012, Forbes Magazine noted that while most

According to the Business Matters 2013, the price to purchase a Phablets device
outright, without a contract, ranges from a low of $500 up to about $900; most are priced
somewhere in the middle. Wireless carriers will likely sell subsidized devices at a lower price
point with a contract.

Conclusion
With the growing advance technology today it cannot be denied that Phablets
contributes a good impact to the lives of everyone. It results to make the work easier and
become more efficient to answer the demands of many users. However it causes negative
impact for children simply because it diverts their attention and spend most of their time in
playing games, browsing internet and watching pornography. It also lead for some students to
become lazy in library research in such a way that they will become more dependent on the
uses of Phablets. It also affects family income simply because it is too expensive and has a high
tendency for becoming a subject to some criminals. Too much exposure to the Phablets can
also result to eye disease wherein it has a high degree of radiation. However professional
observed the technology as a helpful instrument for their business matters.
On the other hand, I can say theres no debauched to adopt the new device technology
as everyone desires to join the change of growing advance technology today. But there must be
a limitation to balance its needs and demand. Somehow using the technology could easily help
everyone to make their work easier.
