Maria and Scruffy sat together.
It was Saturday. Maria and Scruy, her much loved dog, sat together on the
living room couch. Maria was sort of watching cartoons, sort of doing word searches
in her new word search book and sort of patting Scruy. O in the background, she
heard her mom using the mixer to make the brownies she said they would have for
dessert after dinner.

Stop barking! Maria yelled at Scruffy.
Suddenly, Scruys ears perked up. She jumped up and began growling as she
raced to the door. Maria also jumped up. By now, Scruy was barking furiously as she
stood by the door. Maria peeked out of the window next to the door to try to see what
was upsetting Scruy.
Scruy. Its all right. Stop barking! Maria yelled at Scruy. Its the
mailman. He is our neighborhood friend. He is not dangerous. He is only doing

Scruy ran back and forth from the door making lots of noise and a big

mailman made his way down the walkway and away from the house.
Maria collected the mail from the mailbox and walked into the kitchen with
it. Scruy, looking very pleased with herself, tagged along with her. She seemed to have
forgotten the mailman.
Mom, the mailman was just here. I guess you knew that. Scruy always barks
when he comes, Maria commented.
I think Scruy feels that barking at the mailman is part of her job to protect
