Processional Hymn
-1- -4-
Soloist: Once in royal David’s city All: And our eyes at last shall see Him,
Stood a lowly cattle shed, Through His own redeeming love,
Where a mother laid her Baby For that Child so dear and gentle
In a manger for His bed. Is our Lord in heaven above;
Mary was that mother mild, And He leads His children on
Jesus Christ her little Child. To the place where He is gone.

-2- -5-
Choir: He came down to earth from heaven All: Not in that poor lowly stable,
Who is God and Lord of all, With the oxen standing round,
And His shelter was a stable, We shall see Him; but in heaven
And His cradle was a stall. Where His saints
With the poor, oppressed, and lowly, His throne surround:
Lived on earth our Saviour holy. Christ revealed to faithful eye,
Set at God*s right hand on high.
-3-
All: Jesus is our childhood’s pattern,
Day by day like us He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He knew;
And He feels for all our sadness,
And He shares in all our gladness.
Words: Cecil Frances Humphreys Alexander (1818-1895), in her Hymns for Little Children, 1848.
Music: Irby, Henry J. Gauntlett (1805-1876) in Carols, Four Numbers, 1849; harmony by Arthur Henry Mann (1850-
1929) for King’s College, Cambridge.
Prayer of Invocation Reverend Steve Cobb
Led by the Pastor.

The Lord’s Prayer

Said by all.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

The congregation sits.

Greeting

Carols
Sung by the Carol Choir (ages 3-5).

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

Go, tell it on the mountain Over the hills and everywhere;

Go, tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born!
While shepherds kept their watching O’er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens There shone a holy light.

Words: Little Children’s Book for Schools and Families, c. 1885. / John Work II, (1872-1925).

Wind through the olive trees softly did blow

round little Bethlehem, long, long ago.

Sheep on the hillside lay, whiter than snow.

Shepherds were watching them, long, long ago.

Still, still, still, for now the baby sleeps.

The angels sing a song of joy by the cradle of the boy.
Still, still, still, for now Christ Jesus sleeps.

Come, let us journey there, where the winds blow,

Open our eyes to Love, Born long ago.

Fifth Lesson Luke 2:1-7 Reader: Matt Johnson

Luke tells of the birth of Jesus. Clerk of Session

Carol
Sung by the Chancel Choir.

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance

To see the legend of my play, To call my true love to my dance:

Then was I born of a virgin pure, Of her I took fleshly substance;

Thus was I knit to man’s nature, To call my true love to my dance:

In a manger laid and wrapped I was, So very poor this was my chance,
Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, To call my true love to my dance:

Then afterwards baptized I was; The Holy Ghost on me did glance,

My Father’s voice heard from above, To call my true love to my dance:

Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; This have I done for my true love.

Words: Traditional English Carol.

Music: John Gardner (b. 1917).

Seventh Lesson Luke 2:8-20 Reader: Christopher Martin
The shepherds go to the manger. Director of Music

Carol
Sung by the Chancel Choir.

Chill of the nightfall, lamps in the windows, letting their light fall clear on the snow;
bitter December bids us remember Christ in the stable long, long ago.

Silence of midnight, voices of angels, singing to bid night yield to the dawn;
darkness is ended, sinners befriended, where in the stable Jesus is born.

Splendor of starlight high on the hillside, faint is the far light burning below.
Kneeling beside Him shepherds adore Him, Christ in the stable long, long ago.

Glory of daybreak! Sorrows and shadows, suddenly they break forth into morn;
Sing out and tell now all shall be well now, for in the stable Jesus is born!

Text: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926).

Music: Larry Shackley (b. 1956).

Eighth Lesson Matthew 2:1-12 Reader: Chris Thomas

Dormi, Jesu! mater ridet [Sleep, sweet baby, my cares beguiling:

Quae tam dulcem somnum videt, Mother sits beside thee, smiling;
Dormi, Jesu, blandule. Sleep, my darling, tenderly.]

Si non dormis, mater plorat [If thou sleep not, mother mourneth,
Inter fila cantans orat, Singing as her wheel she turneth:
Blande, veni, somnule. Come, soft slumber, balmily.]

Sleep, sweet baby, my cares beguiling:

Mother sits beside thee, smiling;
Sleep, my darling, tenderly.

Words: Latin, origin unknown. English, S. T. Coleridge (1772-1834).

O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning,
