Task #1

Popplet a Twenty-first Century Web 2.0 Tool

http://popplet.com
Describe and explain a Web 2.0 technology
Web 2.0 tools if implemented correctly will provide students with standards-based instruction
that is engaging and efficient as a learning tool. Web 2.0 tools provide strategies and have resources
embedded in them that provide for the teacher support for planning their instruction with technology.
Using Popplet as an instructional tool in the library or classroom will allow the teacher to increase
interactivity and student engagement. The teacher-librarian can extend learning beyond the classroom
and create learning environments that adapt to individual learning needs. Using appropriate technology
tools and resources, the teacher librarian is tailoring the environment to a more student-centered
instructional approach that is more effective and manageable.
Popplet Technologys Strengths
Has the capability of providing immediate feedback for students.
The teacher-librarian can see detailed information about how their students think and approach
problems.
It has the ability for a teacher-librarian to understand whether or not students comprehend the
learning targets of a lesson.
Popplet is a brainstorming tool that can be very useful for visual learners in that is gives them
something to follow along with during the lesson.
Popplet for projects and presentations on a daily basis or throughout the lessons in all subjects.
As a Web 2.0 tool, it enables the student to organize their thoughts in an interactive way.
It is easy to create a Popplet once you are familiar with the concept mapping.
Elementary school students can use it because it is easy enough to operate.
Engages students and teacher-librarians in problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.
It is an online concept mapping site that can be downloaded to an iPad, PC, Mac, Android, or
iPhone
It allows students and teacher-librarians to work collaboratively and share their ideas.
Popplet provides easy access to information if you are interested in creating Venn diagrams,
flow charts, tree charts, or mind maps.
It is a quality web application that has a good interface and many useful features.
Teacher-librarians can create Popplets for their students to use when reviewing for a test.
Popplet is a multidimensional tool

What are some concerns for using Popplet in the classroom?
If schools or teachers want full access to all of the Popplet possibilities, there is a yearly fee.
Navigating on the Popplet screen gets easier the more you use it.
I recommend that you take the tutorial first before attempting to navigate the concept map.
It is one dimensional in that it uses only popples (bubbles that connect).
It is better visually if used on a PC or Mac because the smaller screens mean you have to move
the popples around and shrink them to see them visibly.
Teachers and teacher-librarians over using Popplet as the only organizer or mapping tool may
lose its effect over time.
Embedded popples may display incorrectly
You can only have five Popplets with no way of getting more.
Works more efficiently using Mozilla Firefox versus Safari

Popplets Special Features
Popplet is a fun interactive multidimensional tool.
One of the features allows you to move around and connect the popples thematically.
Another feature allows you choose between six different color codes for your popples
Additional features allow you to type text, insert videos, links, diagrams, and draw in the
popples
Popplet is a tool that can meet a variety of needs.
Students can make presentations of books and working collaboratively to make various
connections to book trailers, images, and more.
There are Popplet blogs
Collaborative features (emails, class websites, Popple posts, )

Task #2
Popplet a Twenty-first Century Web 2.0 Tool
http://popplet.com
Describe and explain a Web 2.0 technology
Popplet technology has provided an innovative way to engage students and incorporate peer
interactions. It is transforming the learning environment. Popplet delivers an interactive way to
create concept maps, mind maps, and options to brainstorm or storyboard right along with peers.
The popplets can be constructed, moved, color coded, typed in, drawn in, and have images or
videos inserted. Popplet is a nice addition to the teacher toolbox that can meet a variety of needs,
including concept mapping, collaboration, and even presenting content (Popplet).
Web 2.0 tools if implemented correctly will provide students with standards-based instruction
that is engaging and efficient as a learning tool. Web 2.0 tools provide strategies and have
resources embedded in them that provide for the teacher support for planning their instruction
with technology. Using Popplet as an instructional tool in the library or classroom will allow the
teacher to increase interactivity and student engagement. The teacher-librarian can extend
learning beyond the classroom and create learning environments that adapt to individual learning
needs. Using appropriate technology tools and resources, the teacher librarian is tailoring the
environment to a more student-centered instructional approach that is more effective and
manageable. Web 2.0 tools in the classroom enliven the study of history, science, art, music,
math, and literature. Educators need to focus on different delivery strategies and methods that
will target all learning styles of students.
Research indicates that teachers do not use technology or are not using technology effectively.
They also may not understand how to integrate technology into classroom practice in meaningful
ways. Technology in the classroom supports the pedagogical shifting taking place in education.
It provides students with tools and support for collaboration, in developing higher-order thinking
and an easier access to information. (Berger & Trexler, 2010)
The Common Core State Standards and the American Association of School Librarians are
preparing students with career and life skills so that they are work ready and prepared for life.
Some of the skills students should have are flexibility and adaptability, be able to take initiative
and demonstrate self-direction when given assignments. Students must be productive and have a
sense of accountability, demonstrate leadership skills and a high level of responsibility.
Employers are looking for employees to be info-savvy and media-fluent. In order for that to take
place the best practices must be in place. Teacher-librarians are supporting collaborative inquiry,
enabling student creativity; as well as teaching to student creativity. Teacher-librarians are
teaching problem-solving by providing reflection time; promoting listening; allowing students to
teach one another digital skills; using interactive white boards and visual aids; telling stories; and
building literacy skills. (Berger & Trexler, 2010)
Description of the first activity
Math-Represent and Interpret Data
3
rd
Grade level
Popplet will be used to plan appropriate and efficient ways to organize data.
Vocabulary building
Represent and interpret data- CCSS.3.MD.3-Draw a scaled picture to represent a data set
with several categories. (Core Standards)
AASL 2-Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new
situations, and create new knowledge.
2.1 Skills
3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and
und understanding in ways that others can view, use and assess.
3.3.4 Create products that apply to authentic, real-world context. (Best Websites for
Teaching & amp; Learning, 2012)
Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually,
quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.
a. Use their experience and their knowledge of language and logic, as well as culture, to
think analytically, address problems creatively, and advocate persuasively.
Representing and interpreting data provides an excellent opportunity for students to
model with mathematics. Students apply what they know about mathematics to create
graphs, they analyze the data in the graphs to make sense of relationships, and they refer
to the relationships among the data to draw conclusions. These processes are important
for making sense of data that students encounter in real-life situations. (Harcourt, 2012)
Task: Students will create a Popplet map by using vocabulary review words and
answering riddles.
The Popplet map describes ways to organize data. In the surrounding popples, place the
vocabulary words that describe different ways to organize data.
Teacher will analyze data produced via Popplet where students should be able to answer
three types of questions.
1. Questions that are based on directly interpreting the data.
2. Questions that compare information requiring interpreting two or more pieces of
information.
3. Questions that require inferences are answered by reading beyond the data.
These types of questions have increasing levels of cognitive complexity.
