Mineral wool insulation materials shall have less than 30% cumulative shot content as determined by ASTM C612
Annex A1. Density of mineral wool products shall be determined by ASTM C612, C302, or C303 as appropriate.
"Delivered density" based on 40% shot content calculated per ASTM C612 shall not be used.
Wheatstone Project LNG Plant
Title:
Cellular glass shall be using cold insulation,cellular glass shall be of a density between 112kg/m3 and 128 kg/m3(7
and 8 pounds per cubic foot) in accordance with ASTM C-552,"Cellular glass block and pipe thermal insulation".
Acceptable material is Pittsburgh-Corning Corporation"Foamglas",no approved equal.Thermal conductivity at 10
(50F) shall be less than 4.6 X 10-4 Watts cm/cm2.
The operating temperature, minimum temperature of the contained fluid during operation, can range from colder
than the ambient temperature through -170C (-274F).
Insulation and non-metallic accessory materials shall contain no asbestos.
Tolerances for sheet metal thickness and wire diameter before working shall be 12% of nominal.
Vapor barrier for cellular glass pipe sections, vessel walls, and the straight or flat sections shall be Protecto Wrap
Company InsulSeal 50, polyethylene backed sheet with adhesive rubber laminate. This material is a peel and
stick sheet which shall be overlapped 75 mm (3inches) in at the seams.
Adhesive for cellular glass shall be Pittsburgh-Corning PC 88 or Foster Adhesive 81-22. Tape for holding insulation
sections in place until covered with jacketing shall be filament reinforced tape equal to 3M Scotch Brand Filament
Tape No. 898. For equipment, the tape shall be 38 mm (1 inch) wide. For piping the tape shall be 25 mm (1
inch) wide.
All expanded perlite; mineral wool insulation and mineral fiber cement or other proposed substitution products shall
be qualified for use on austenitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM C795 by conforming to the pre-
production test requirements of ASTM C692 and the confirming quality control requirements for chemical analysis
of ASTM C871

Bands for attaching insulation to piping or equipment shall be 19 mm (3/4 inch) wide by 0.50 mm (0.020 inch) thick
stainless steel, ASTM A240 Type 316. Bands shall not be used to attach the interior layer of double layer systems.
Mineral wool shall using hot insulation,The preformed shall meet the requirements of ASTM C547 and blanket
shall meet the requirements of ASTM C592 Class II with the following exceptions: a) Shall have a nominal
density of 128 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3). b) Shall have one side faced with stainless
steel hexagonal wire mesh.
Contraction joint filler shall be 48 kg/m3 (3 pounds per cubic foot) fiberglass blankets such as Certain Teed Ultralite
or Owens-Corning 703 compressed to three times its nominal density.
J oint sealant for cellular glass, and vapor stop sealant for temperatures warmer than -15C (5F) for cellular glass
shall be Foster Sealant 95-50.
"S" and "U" clips shall be ASTM A240 Type 316, 19 mm (3/4 inch) wide by 0.81 mm (0.032 inch) thick stainless
steel.
Aluminum jacketing for piping (and equipment smaller than 900mm [36 inches] in diameter) shall be flat smooth,
0.40 mm (0.016 inch) thick, temper H14, ASTM B209 Alloy 3003 or 3105. A 25 micron (one mil), high-density
polyethylene backing and natural kraft paper (40 pound) shall be factory attached for a total thickness of 75
microns (3 mils).
All insulation and non-metallic accessory materials shall contain no asbestos.

All insulation and non-metallic accessory materials shall contain no asbestos.
For temperatures up to 185C (365F) sealant shall be silicone rubber, Dow Corning 999 Silicone Rubber, or Buyer
accepted equal. Compound exposed to temperatures between 185C (365F) and 360C (680F) shall be Childers
CP-79 or Buyer accepted equal.
Adhesive for shop joining the ceramic fiber inner layer to the adjacent layer of insulation shall be a sodium silicate-
based material with demonstrated bond strengths to expanded perlite, ceramic fiber and mineral wool greater than
the tensile strengths of the insulation materials.
Sheet metal screws shall be #8 x 13 mm 18-8 SS self-tapping screws with elastomeric gaskets.
"S" clips for supporting metal jacket courses shall be 0.50 mm thick by 20 mm wide ASTM A240 Type 302, or 304
stainless steel.
Personnel protection guards shall be fabricated from perforated or expanded metal. For hot steel pipe or
equipment to be protected, the expanded metal guard shall be Type 316 stainless steel. Support may be provided
by structural steel anchored at the equipment foundation or by clips banded to the piping or equipment. Support
clips shall be designed to locate the expanded metal a minimum of 75 mm (3 inches) from the hot surface.
Aluminium jacketing for piping (and equipment smaller than 900 mm in diameter) shall be 4.5 mm corrugated, 0.40
mm thick, temper H14, ASTM B209 Alloy 3003 or 3105. A 25-micron (one mil), high-density polyethylene backing
and natural kraft paper shall be factory attached. For insulation to be utilized as fireproofing, the jacketing shall be
Type 316 stainless steel, 4.5 mm corrugated, 0.25 mm thick.
Bands for attaching jacketing to piping shall be applied on 300 mm centers (12 in.) and shall be 13mm wide by
0.38mm thick stainless steel, ASTM A240 Type 316.
Tie wire, lacing wire, and lacing hairpins shall be 0.8 mm diameter, Type 304 soft annealed SS wire.
The vapor barrier shall be installed immediately under the weather jacket. If the loaded vinyl is not bonded to the
weather jacket, then the vapor barrier shall be installed between the loaded vinyl layer and the weather jacket. If
the loaded vinyl is bonded to the weather jacket, then the vapor barrier shall be installed immediately under the
bonded loaded vinyl/weather jacket.
A heavy fillet of heat resistant caulk shall be applied around all protrusions through the jacketing. Protrusions with
metal temperatures above 360F (680F) must rely on flashing to keep water out. Other jacket-to-jacket seams not
waterproof by virtue of their design shall be caulked with silicone rubber sealant
Aluminum jacketing shall be used for all weather barriers except for fireproofing insulation. Stainless steel jacketing
shall be used for fireproofing insulation. All exposed longitudinal edges of sheet metal shall be folded back 10 mm
(3/8 inch) to eliminate a sharp edge.
Seals shall be heavy-duty wing type or crimp (closed) type fabricated from 0.80 mm (0.032 inch) thick ASTM A240
Type 302 or 304 stainless steel. Crimp (closed) type seals are required with spring tensioned banding.
Bands shall be 0.50 mm (0.020 inch) thick by 13 mm (0.50 inch) or 20 mm (0.75 inch) wide as required by
Sections 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 and conform to ASTM A240 Type 302 or 304 stainless steel.
Tie wire, lacing wire, and lacing hair pins shall be 16-gauge Type 304 soft annealed SS wire.
"S" clips for supporting metal jacket courses shall be 0.50 mm (0.020 inch) thick by 20 mm (0.75 inch) wide ASTM
A240 Type 302, or 304 stainless steel.
Aluminum jacketing for piping shall be minimum of 0.40 mm (.016

) thick, temper H14, alloy 3003 or 3105. A 25
micron (one mil), high-density polyethylene backing and natural kraft paper shall be factory attached. The exterior
surface (for COLD piping only) shall have a gray Tedlar~coating to provide a surface emissivity of 0.85 minimum.
For insulation to be utilized as fireproofing the jacketing shall be Type 316 stainless steel minimum of 0.25 mm

Caulking compounds for temperatures up to 185C (365F) sealant shall be silicone rubber, Dow Corning 999
Silicone Rubber, or buyer accepted equal. Compound exposed to temperatures between 185C and 360C (680
F) shall be Childers CP-79 or buyer accepted equal.
For piping operating to 610C (1130F),Mineral wool shall using hot insulation,The preformed shall meet the
requirements of ASTM C547 and blanket shall meet the requirements of ASTM C592 Class II with the following
requirements: a)The density for mineral wool shall be 128 kg/m3
(8 lb/ft3).
