Wauseon Indians Remain Unbeaten

With 30-7 Win At Archbold
By: Bill Bray
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
ARCHBOLD -September 26, 2014 The
Wauseon Indians upped their record to 5-0
and 3-0 in NWOAL play with a 30-7 victory
over archrival the Archbold Blue Streaks.
In typical fashion, the Indians poored
on the scoring in the first half to dig Archbold's hole deep by half time as they rolled
to 23-7 half time lead.
After an Archbold penalty on the first
play of the contest, Wauseon's Zac Robinson gave himself a birthday present when
he took the hike from Anthony Werder and
proceeded to cut over the left side of the
Wauseon line and broke away for a 61 yard
touchdown jaunt. Robinson outran the
Archbold secondary as he set foot in the
end zone at the 11:45 mark.
The teams battled with their defenses
over the next few drives. Then the Indians
found the end zone again at the 1:24 mark
when Robinson swung a swing pass to
Nate Suntken who galloped the remaining
31 yards for the score. The Indians scoring drive took just two plays and covered
35 yards. After Josh Whitcomb's first attempt hit the goal post, the Indians went
for two points and were successful with a
pass from Mason Creager to Jacob Newlove
as the Indians grew their lead to 14-0 with
1:24 left in the first stanza.
With the advent of the second quarter,
the Indians were on the board for the third
time. After some tough inside yardage from
Jacob Flory, Robinson found Newlove for
31 yards putting the ball at the Archbold
one yard line. From there Robinson covered
the final yard. This time the Indians twopoint conversion fell short and the lead was
20-0 with 11:05 left in the second quarter.
The Blue Streaks mounted their first
legitimate drive on their next possession.
Starting on their on 47, they took 10 plays
to move down to the Indians 17, but as in
past games, the defense stymied the Blue
Streak drive with the help from the defensive front of Werder, Noah Castle, and

Jalen Brimmer.
Wauseon's next score came when their
next drive stalled as Josh Whitcomb made
good on his second field goal attempt on
the season. The field goal ended a nine play
drive. Whitcomb's 25 yarder built the lead
to 23-0 with 2:41 left in the half.
After an Archbold drive that ended on
the Wauseon's 23, the Indians took possession with 1:18 remaining. Zac Robinson
took his drop to throw but in the way was
Archbold defender Mitchell Hogrefe, who
intercepted and ran the distance for the
Blue Streaks' score. Seth Mayer was good
on the point after and with that the half
ended with Wauseon ahead 23-7.
Much of the third quarter saw each
team's offenses go 'three and out'. The Indians offense sputtered a bit, but the rock of
Indians football, the defense, stayed steady
and controlled the second half. During the
third quarter the Blue Streaks accumulated just two first downs.
The Indians got their final score with 47
seconds left in the third quarter when Robinson found Newlove for 17 yards and the
score. Whitcomb's kick was good and the
final score of the night was Wauseon 30,
Archbold 7.
Statisically Robinson was the offensive
leader for Wauseon. The senior signal caller was good on nine of 22 passes for 167
yards and two touchdowns. He was also
the leading rusher with 121 yards on 19
carries and two scores. Newlove was the
Indians leading receiver with three catches
for 64 yards and one touchdown.
Team yardage was dominated by
Wauseon. The Indians ran 63 plays to
Archbold's 57. Wauseon had total yardage
of 372 yards to 165 for the Streaks. On the
ground the Indians defensive dominance
showed as the Streaks gained just 59 yards
to Wauseon's 205.
Next up for Wauseon is the Patrick Henry Patriots as the Indians celebrate homecoming.

Montpelier Falls To Evergreen

By T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(September 26h, 2014)-EVERGREEN:

It was gradual, but the Locomotives of
Montpelier were overwhelmed by NWOAL
foe Evergreen.
The Vikings started slow, with 8 points
in the first quarter, then 6 in the second.
Another 6 points in th third period and
13 in the fourth, and Montpelier suddenly
found itself in a 33-0 deficit.
Offensively, the Locos were held to just
39 yards, while Evergreen amasses 410
yards of total offense. This is due largely to
the Vikings holding onto the ball, running
64 plays in 31:25 as compared to Montpelier's 36 in 16:35.
The biggest issue with the Locomotive
offense was the lack of an effective running game. Rushing for 28 yards on 25
attempts will stall any offense, but that is
especially true for a team as dependent on
the run as Montpelier.
Jordan Birdsall accounted for 22 of
those 28 yards on his 8 attempts. Dallas
Royer gained 4 yards on 7 rushes.
As for the passing game, Montpelier
threw for 11 yards while completing 3 of 11

passes. That gives the Locos an average of

less than 4 yards a pass. Being left to rely
on moving the ball through the air proved
an effective tactic for Evergreen.
Cody Caudill, usually a receiver for
Montpelier, played the role of quarterback
against the Vikings. He completed those
3 passes for 11 yards. Nate McCord and
Keaton Byers each had 1 reception for 4
yards.
Defensively, Jordan Birdsall led the
way with 9 solo tackles, including 2 for a
loss. Max Hulbert and Bryce Cooley each
caught a Viking ball carrier behind the line
once as well.
Overall, however, the defense allowed
249 yards passing and 161 yards rushing
on the night. The yards weren't as important as how they were distributed. It's essential that a defense make the opposing
offense make a choice as to what they are
going to do. Allowing Evergreen to both
run and pass so effectively played a major
part in sealing their fate in this game.
The Locomotives will have to rebound
quickly from this loss, as they are hosting
Delta next week for Homecoming.

Edon Shut Out Of Second Half

Against Constantine, Loses Game
By T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(September 26th, 2014)-CONSTANTINE, MI: Trust me, that's a good football

team. We knew coming in we were going to
have some issues.
Those were the words of Shawn Griffin,
head coach of the Constantine Football
Team. Those issues he spoke of gave his
team some serious trouble in the first half
where Edon enjoyed a 36-34 lead against
the Falcons. Some major halftime adjustments turned things around, however, and
Constantine exploded for a 45 point second half, holding Edon scoreless in that
same period of time. The Bombers ended
up losing the game 79-36.
Of note, all of Constantine's 549 yards
came on the ground, as the team did not
attempt one pass in the entirety of the
game. That rushing attack also produced
11 touchdowns, all of which went for 30 or
more yards.
Edon, by contrast, did most of their
work through the air. Senior quarterback
Kaden Sapp went 30-48 passing for 393
yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 2 touchdowns.
Preston Klinger led the Bombers with
128 receiving yards and a touchdown
from 6 receptions. Landon Bloir also had a

touchdown catch on the night.

When the Bombers did run, they went
to Cameron Castillo. The senior running
back rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown
on 11 carries.
Some alterations to the Constantine
defensive front gave Edon fits in the second half. The Bombers also got away with
three onside kicks in the first half, limiting
the possessions available to the Falcons.
Some adjustments on special teams prevented this from recurring in the second
half.
Of course, losing the turnover battle
4-0 will always lessen a team's chance at
winning,
But it was Edon's inability to stop the
run, particularly once an opponent gets
past the defensive line, that kept the
Bombers out of this game. Granted, Constantine is a very powerful rushing team.
Coach Griffin was right, though. Despite one glaring weakness, Edon is a good
football team, and they have the ability to
overcome said weakness against the rest of
their schedule.
The best thing the Bombers can do at
this point is put the Constantine game out
of their minds and focus on this week's
game at Gibsonburg.

THE HOMETOWN HUDDLE
The Fourth To Cardinal Stritch Montpelier, Hilltop Take Part
By T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(September 26th, 2014)-WEST UNITY:

The Homecoming Game was a seesaw
event for the Hilltop Football Team.
After scoring first, thanks to the foot
of placekicker Justin Ashenfelter, the Cadets soon found themselves down on the
scoreboard. Cardinal Stritch gained the
advantage thanks to a touchdown pass by
quarterback Joe Sinay and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. A successful
extra point and a missed two point conversion put Hilltop on the wrong end of a 13-3
score to end the first quarter.
Hilltop began to work their way back
into the game in the second period. With
just over three minutes to go until halftime, Cadet quarterback Quinn Smith
connected with Mikel Burlew for a 24 yard
touchdown pass. The two point conversion
attempt was unsuccessful, and Hilltop was
still down 13-9.
Quinn found Burlew again in the third
quarter, this time from 14 yards out.
Again, Hilltop was unable to convert the
two point attempt. They had regained the
lead, however, going up 15-13.
Cardinal Stritch scored twice in the
fourth quarter to wrestle back the lead
and ultimately win the game. With over
ten minutes left in the game, Sinay ran the
ball into the end zone from 4 yards away,
giving Stritch a 21-15 lead. Then, with just
under two minutes to go, Sinay rushed for

a 45 yard touchdown, putting his team up

27-15, where it stayed for the remainder of
the game.
Hilltop was out-gained by Cardinal
Stritch in total yards 346-212. The Cadets
did produce more passing yards at 173 to
Stritchs 103. The issue for the Cadets was
the running game, as they were out rushed
243-39. Committing four turnovers while
forcing none was also detrimental to the
Hilltop effort.
Smith threw for 145 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception, completing 8
of his 32 pass attempts.
David Smith was the leading rusher
for Hilltop, gaining 19 yards of 4 rushes.
Quinn Smith ran the ball himself 7 times,
gaining 13 yards overall. Tyler Suboski
amassed 93 receiving yards on 4 catches. Burlew caught the ball 3 times for 66
yards, but also had both touchdown receptions in the game.
Defensively, Hilltop was able to attack
Stritch behind the line of scrimmage. Joe
Shilling had 7 tackles for a loss, including
2 sacks on the night. Zack VanDyke made
3 sacks, while Jalen Towers contributed
another 2. Kohl Colins also penetrated the
line, earning a sack as well.
Hilltop has to find a way to get their
rushing game going if they have any
chance to salvage this season. They travel
to Danbury next week.

Fayette Defeats Montpelier,

Fayette Defeats North Central
Loses To Hicksville In Tri-Match
(September 20th, 2014)-HICKSVILLE:
The Lady Eagles of Fayette split a trimatch with hosting team Hicksville and
fellow traveler Montpelier.
Montpelier was the first opponent for
Fayette. The Eagles were able to procure
game 1 from the Locos, taking the set 2512. Montpelier came chugging back, however, winning game 2 25-21. The decisive
third game was a close one, but it was Fayette who pulled out the victory 25-17.
Hannah Machacek led the Lady Eagles
with 13 assists, 3 kills, 2 digs, and 2 aces.

Teammate McKenzee Schaffner defended

the Fayette floor with 15 digs.
Hicksville was up next for Fayette,
and the hometown team stepped onto the
court ready to play, taking down Fayette in
straight sets. Game 1 saw the Lady Eagles
fall 9-25 to the Aces. The second set was a
bit closer, but the Eagles still lost 12-25.
McKenzee Schaffner again refused to
let the ball touch the floor, making 16 digs
for Fayette. Jessie Wheeler and Michaela
Bates both led the team in kills with 3
each.

(September 23rd, 2014)-PIONEER: Fayette made the trip to North Central, ready
to take on the other Eagles of the BBC.
The match-up was a good one, with two
even teams fighting against one another.
Ultimately, it was Fayette who came out on
top, needing four sets to do so.
Fayette came out swinging with a game
1 win 25-15. North Central went right
back at them, though, winning game 2
25-22. Game 3 was a tussle, with Fayette

Edon Loses To Hicksville In Four Sets

(September 22nd, 2014)-EDON: Despite getting off to a good start, the Lady
Bombers of Edon dropped a home match
to non-conference opponent Hicksville.
The match was tight from the start.
Game 1 was a brutal slug fest, with the
hometown Bombers winning 25-22. The
Lady Aces would rebound from the loss,
however. In the second set, the Edon girls
fought hard, but couldnt keep pace with
Hicksville, dropping the game 19-25. Ever
resilient, Edon tried to bounce back in

game 3. The Aces were ready for them, and

the Bombers lost the set 21-25. Game 4

Montpelier Loses At Ayersville

(September 22nd, 2014)-AYERSVILLE:
Playing the role of visitor, arrived on the
Ayersville court with the odds stacked
against them. Those odds proved to be too
much to overcome, as the Lady Locomotives lost the match in straight sets.
From Game 1, the Locos struggled.
Ayersville took the set 25-13. Rebounding was difficult for the Montpelier girls,
and they dropped game 2 12-25. Finally

Hilltop Loses At Home To Pettisville

(September 23rd, 2014)-WEST UNITY:
The hometown Cadets got off the a strong
start, but they couldn't keep it up against
the visiting Lady Blackbirds of Pettisville.
Game 1 of the BBC contest was very
heated, and both sides left it all on the
court. The girls of Pettisville had just
enough to get past the surging Cadets,
however, taking the set 27-25. Hilltop never quite recovered from the emotional loss,
dropping the next two sets 9-25 and 1025, respectively.

Dana Fricke had a big night for the

Blackbirds with 13 kills, 6 blocks, 3 digs,
and 3 aces. Also for Pettisville, Jordyn Pursel made 14 kills and 8 digs. Kate Kauffman added 17 assists and a kill in the victory.
Hilltop's Cierra Grant owned the net for
the evening, making 4 blocks to go along
with her 5 digs and 2 kills. Ariana Brown
led the team in kills with 3, also making a
dig. Teammate Felicity Jackson had 4 assists, 4 digs, 2 kills, 2 blocks as well.

Edon Bombers Take Down

Stryker On The Road
(September 23rd, 2014)-STRYKER:
Winning on the road is hard, but getting
off to a fast start helps. This was the case
when Edon traveled to Stryker. Coming
out strong led to a victory in straight sets
for the Bombers, despite the tough play of
the hometown Panthers.
The first set saw the Bombers take
over the match, as they won 25-14. The
Lady Panthers played fiercely in game 2,
but couldn't overtake the girls of Edon.
Stryker lost the set 22-25. Undeterred,
the Panthers regrouped for the third set.
Game 3 would belong to the Lady Bomb-

ers, though, as they took the set 25-20,

winning the match.
The 13 kills and 7 digs of Nicole Newell played a major role in the Bomber win.

this season, showed they could play from
behind as well. Being down 2-1 at the half,
and 3-1 early into the second, Pettisville
battled back to win the match 5-3, avenging their lone tie of the year.
Lenawee was the first to strike, taking an 0-1 lead to start the game. In the

and Detric Yoder headed the ball for a goal
to tie the game. Another Lenawee goal put

Lenawee began the second half in style,

by Graeme Jacoby and Detric Yoder also
made the victory possible.

STRONG FINISH ... Dan Dippman shows off his trophy for winning the 250-lap Enduro
Race.
Oakshade Raceway wrapped up the
2014 racing season with a full weekend
of racing excitement. Saturday night was
Season Championship for the UMP Sportsman, Bomber and Best Performance Motorsports Compact classes along with the
15th Annual Bomber Spectacular which
was dominated by Gregg DeTray. Then on
Sunday afternoon, Dan Dippman won the
250-lap Enduro race.
Over 70 Bombers filled the pits hoping
for a shot at winning the $1,000 Bomber
Spectacular sponsored by Hot Rod Welding and Engineering. Gregg DeTray from
Swanton, Ohio started on the outside of
the front row and took the lead from Terry
Rushlow by the completion of the first lap.
Jeff Foks was leading the championship
points by 39 over Chris Sands at the start
of the race, but had to start ninth. Sands
started even further back, but was able
to get by Foks and break into the top five
about halfway through the 25-lap feature
event.
Despite one last bid for the lead from
Rushlow, DeTray was able to lead the
entire distance to win his fourth feature
event of the season. Rushlow ran second
the entire race all the way to the checkered
flag. Craig Dippman was also consistent;
starting third, running third and finishing in third. Adam Noonan from Toledo,
Ohio got by Sands late in the race to finish fourth. Sands' fifth place finish wasn't
good enough to catch the unofficial Bomber point champion, Foks, who ended up in
7th.
The final UMP Sportsman feature of the
year had some ugly moments. Of the 20
cars that started, less than half the field
was still running at the end of the 25-laps.
Bruce Stuart took advantage of starting on
the pole to lead the first few laps of the Season Championship race. Tim Line had already unofficially locked up the Sportsman
championship with his 10 feature wins
this season and was going for his eleventh
when he took the lead from Stuart on lap

four. Line then proceeded to pull away.

B.J. Gregory from Swanton, Ohio managed
to avoid most of the carnage to get himself
in to second place by lap 11. Gregory made
a few attempts to take the lead from Line,
but was unable to get by Line until late
in the race when Line suffered some terrible luck. With Gregory right behind, Line
had something break in the rear end that
caused him to spin. Gregory made a great
move to get by Line with only some minor
contact and took over the race lead. Line's
night was over. Gregory went on to pick
up the victory over Stuart, Drew Smith and
Joe Smith who started 20th. Bob Krumm
was fifth.
John Martis out of Toledo, Ohio passed
Cory Gumm for the lead on the outside on
lap number two on his way to another Best
Performance Motorsports Compact feature
win in his rookie season. Brandon Myers
unofficially won the point championship
and finished in the runner up position in
the race. Brogan Rehklau ended up third
followed by Aaron Barrick and Andrew
Cutler.
Sunday afternoon's Enduro had some
pretty tight racing for a 250 lap event with
no cautions. For a good portion of the
race, three cars were all on the lead lap.
Chris Williams led at the start and seemed
to handle the early slick track conditions
the best. By the halfway point in the race,
Dan Dippman from Oregon, Ohio took over
the race lead with Jeremy Grover moving
into second. Dippman kept out of trouble
and went on to be the first to complete all
250 laps in about an hour and forty-five
minutes. Grover finished one lap behind
in second. Mike Ritz had a tough go early
on in the race, but soldiered on to a third
place finish. Williams slipped back to finish fourth. Brad Glibert survived flying
over a loose wheel and having his hood fly
open to finish fifth.

Congratulations On
A Great Season!

GREAT PERFORMANCE ... North Centrals Allyson Hutchison, who shot a 91,
and Wauseons Anna Marshall, who shot an 82, earlier this week at the District
Golf Tournament at Sycamore Springs GC. Although neither one advanced to
next weeks State Tournament, their scores were good for 18th and 6th overall
of a field of 72 golfers. Great season ladies! Way to represent your schools and
Northwest Ohio. We are very proud of you!
